R in a cluster environment?
I'm a cluster administrator and one of my users has requested that I install R on our system. Can R be used in a cluster computing environment that utilizes batch processing, i.e. no graphical output during processing? Also, can R be parallelized to run on many nodes/processors simultaneously? Ivan Ivan E. Tornes Ph.D. Battelle 505 King Avenue Columbus, OH 43201-2693 ? Phone:614-424-5165

Bug#603391: Workaround PyGrub issue
Confirmed this issue. To reproduce: Install a fresh Wheezy AMD64 guest under Xen 4.1 (hypervirtualized, boot from the debian-7.1.0-amd64-CD-1.iso). Use "entire disk" automatic layout for partitioning, this creates /dev/xvda1 for / and /dev/xvda5 for swap. It will create /boot/grub/grub.cfg with many references to (/dev/xvda,msdos1) which works fine when the machine is booted

Enabling capabilities in a container
I'm using libvirt_lxc to create and manage various containers. I need to enable certain capabilities in a container to support ctdb, and as a quick solution I decided to just enable them all. I *thought* this would do the trick, adding the following XML to my container config: <features> <capabilities policy='allow'> </capabilities> </features> After

problem with NT-4.0
Hello, we have a Linux box running Samba 2.2.7a and several clients running Windows NT 4 WS (last service pack) and Windows 95 (last service pack too). All clients are running a program made in ACU-Cobol for Windows and sometimes the NT machines abort the execution reporting a cobol blocking error. This usually results in broken indexes... We have traced the execution and haven't found the

Retaining regularly used add-ons
Hi everyone, How might I go about configuring R to keep add-on packages loaded from session to session? Is this undesireable for some reason? At present, I keep a file called "pckgs.txt" in my working directory with, e.g., library(gnlm) library(Hmisc) ... and then type source("add-ons.txt") every time I start a new session. I suspect there's a more elegant way to hold

cache memory not being used
Since I upgraded to 4.2 it looks like the cache memory doesn't go over about 70K or so. I have over 700K free and it started using swap, which doesn't normally happen for a few days or so. Any hints on what might be up? This is just after a compile and the cached is only 75k total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1032848 263992 768856 0

MSM modeling and transition rates in R
Greetings, I'm using MSM (mutli-state markov modeling) package to study the progression of fibrosis in U.S hepatitis C population. I find this is a very fascinating tool for an applied researcher like myself. I have a four stage progression only model without any absorbing stage, also assuming no misclassification error in the data for the time being. I also have a couple covariates in the

simple random cluster sampling - bootstrapping
Hello all, I have 300 clusters of fixed size 2 and I need to do resampling with replacement to run some regression models. I've searched through the archive and the only thing I found was that I could use 'boot()' function. but it's not clear to me how I can do this. Has anyone done it? I would very much appreciate your help, kelly

Fitted probabilities from glmmPQL?
Hello All, Specifying 'type = "response"' when using predict() on a model fit using glm(...,family="binomial") returns fitted probabilities. Is it possible to get the same from a model object fit using glmmPQL() ? Thanks in advance, Rob _____________________________________________________ Rob Keefe Lab: (208) 885-5165 M.S. student

Multiple expressions in system.time()?
Hi All, Is it possible for system.time() to measure the time it takes for a machine to evaluate more than one R expression? For example, # This I can do: > system.time(x <- rnorm(100000)) [1] 0.07 0.00 0.13 0.00 0.00 # But this I can't: > system.time(x <- rnorm(100000); new <- sample(x, 100000, replace=T)) Error: syntax error # Nor this: > system.time(x <-
