Partition vs disk images
I realize this might be one of those religious topics, but is there any good rule of thumb as to how to setup storage for a Xen domU? Without really knowing any better, I''m basically going to make a disk image of the OS and the create a ''data'' partition on my raid 5 volume for each virtual machine. This is for use at home, so in reality it probably doesn''t

Questions on qcow, qcow2 versus LVM
I''ve been using lvm under centos to create the backing store for domUs and although the performance seems acceptable it has some shortcomings. The biggest of which is the LVM bug which prevents me from removing an lv (it says it is still mounted and it definitely isnt). I thought this was just a centos bug but it appears to be evident in debian and ubuntu too and I really can''t

what''s correct way of shrinking LVM based domU?
Hi all I want to shrink one of my LVM based domU''s, but don''t quite know how to do it. I have searched the Wiki & HOWTO''s, and they all show you how expand / enlarge a LVM based domU, but not shrinking it. So, I stopped (destroyed) the domU, and then resized it as follows: lvresize /dev/data/cpanel1 -L10GB (It was 100GB), but when I a started it up again, I

CentOS 4 and CentOS 5 DomU on CentOS 5 Dom0: problems with hand-built OS and LVM
I''ve been running any number of CentOS 4 based Xen hosts and guests using CentOS 4.4, and the Xen RPM''s from www.xensource.com, and various hand-built OS images using jailtime and my own own OS images. I like the jailtime approach: One partition for / on the DomU, /dev/sda1, built as a local file or local LVM partition One partiton for swap on the DomU, /dev/sda2,

Creating a Bootable Image file
Newbie Question: We are using RHEL 5.2 with the 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5xen kernel. I am trying to follow instructions that I found to create an bootable image by doing the following: I first created a 10 gig file and formatted the partition using the dd and mkfs.ext3 commands: dd if=/dev/zero if=generic.img bs=1024k count=10000 mkfs.ext3 -t ext3 generic.img >From a working image that I

Can you convert Windows LVM domU to sparse img file?
I have a Windows 2000 domU running in an LVM partition. I need to move it to another host, but none of my other xen servers have lvm or free space to create an lvm. So I''d like to convert it to a sparse img file. The file system in the domU is ntfs. Can anyone suggest how to do this? Thanks, James _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list

mount xen partitions inside logical volume from dom0?
I''ve installed a FC5 domU under RHEL5-beta2 dom0 with virt-manager. As the disk for domU I used: phy:/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol02,xvda,w In the domU I have partitions: /dev/xvda1 on / type ext3 (rw) /dev/xvda2 on /var type ext3 (rw) How do I access these partitions from dom0? For example if I take an LVM snapshot of LogVol02, how do I mount the / partition of the domU installed on

howto delete a lvm with windows partition
Hi List, slightly OT but i have Xen and Windows running (xen 3.2.0, hvm, win 2k3) on top of a lvm volume. Now i want to delete such a volume but i got the message: $ lvremove /dev/Xen0/Win2kServer Can''t remove open logical volume "Win2kServer" The volume is not in use by any VM, but there is a partition table on it with 8Megs of free space and a ntfs partition. I also got 2

DomU in it''s own LVM partition fails to boot CentOS 5.2 Dom0/U
I''m trying to do what I think would be relatively simple but can''t seem to make it work. Essentially I want to create several domU''s running CentOS each with it''s own LVM partition for increased performance over image files. Initially I did a test with image files and everything went fine, I booted the supplied initrd and vmlinuz images installed CentOS from

Installing openSuSE 10.3 as PV-guest on a LVM-drive of a openSuSE 10.3 host
Hi, how can I install a openSuSE 10.3 PV-guest on a LVM-drive of a openSuSE 10.3 host with Xen 3.10? On 10.2 with Xen 3.0.3 the openSuSE-YaST-module for managing VMs could install the system also on block-devices, unfortunately this is not possible anymore with OSS 10.3 :-( What I have tried: - I created two LVM-partitions, one for "/" one for swap. - Installing an OSS 10.2 PV-guest

xvda vs lvm
Hi, I''m just wondering if there are any speed or stability differences between running a system directly of a LVM partition versus a xvd partition? Basicly: disk = [ ''phy:/dev/LVM/root,xvda,w'', ] vs disk= [ ''phy:LVM/root,hda1,w'',] Any tips? I tried searching the archives but I didn''t find anything. Kind regards, Tarjei

Best way to migrate Xen Disk IMG w/LVM''s to a block-device? (e.g. DRBD)
Hi All, I was hoping to pick someone''s brain about the best way of moving a Xen disk image (which has LVM''s inside of it) to a new block-device? I have the target DRBD device ready but unsure what''s the best & safest way to do it. I was actually tempted to mount the Xen disk image in a dom0, and make it visible via loop devices and promote that DRBD node for

GPL PV TAP cow incompatible?
Hi Is it true that the GPLPV drivers is incompatible with QCOW images? The Windows DomU works fine with raw standard "file:/" images, and paravirtualized Linux DomU works fine with QCOW and raw images. If i use QCOW images with my Windows DomU''s i get a stop error: 0x00000007b (inaccessible boot device). It looks like the blkback.3.hda process, that normally starts with

Performance Issues: I/O Wait
Hey, everyone, I''m having some issues with a Xen DomU right related to performance. We have an application that cross-compiles a Linux distribution from scratch for embedded systems. We''re attempting to run this application inside a Xen DomU (paravirtualized, modified guest kernel), and the performance is really bad. The culprit seems to be high I/O wait times related to the

Using LVM snapshots to backup NTFS partitions for windows guests
Hi everyone! I''ve been reading this list for a while and I''m thinking that the best way to do backups is using LVM snapshots as discussed here several times. The problem is that when i use a LVM logical volume as windows disk, windows writes the partition table onto the LV so the LV itself is not a partition - it''s a whole disk. lvm/device-mapper does not create the

Migrating DomUs from file VBD to LVM Backend
Hello, what would be the easiest and fastest way to migrate a file based DomU to a LVM based DomU. Given that the file contains a partition table + partitions. I tried with an dummy approach: dd if=/path/to/file.img of=/dev/volumegroup/logical-volume. That gives me a logical volume that xm create refuses to use....
