Let''s say I have a catalog with hotels. Each hotel belongs to a
category (4-star, 5-star etc.) This is it''s official category.However,
there is also a category that users assign and a category that

adding layouts within layouts
Hi,
I want to be able to have several layouts within each other so that I don''t
have to keep repeating the layout code for one, in another. An example
would be having a layout for the title of your web page and then having an
embedded layout for the body portion in which the HTML for whatever view
gets displayed. Is this possible?

Include extra partial in layouts
Hi all,
Does anybody know how to include a partial (next to @content_for_layout) in a
layout file?
I''m looking for a something like @partial_for_include => ''filename'' in my
layout files. So a linked .rhtml file gets picked up from within a layout
file. All my layout files (4 at the moment) have a <div class="navright">

How to display different images using ajax?

On my page i display one full size image and a list of thumbnails.
I''d like to change the full size image with a full size version of a
thumbnail, after clicking on one of them.
How to write controller action, so it would update the image without

Unicode HOWTO?
I am disappointed about the (seeming) lack of Unicode support in Rails.
Is there a howto about working the most important limitations? For
example, figuring out the length of an entered word: "???".length() will
return 6, not 3. So if there is a maximum number of characters a user is
allowed to enter, this won''t work as it should -- it treats strings as
byte arrays instead

Nooby partials / component problems
I''m stumped on what seems like should be a fairly easy thing, so I
hope someone can point out my error.
I wanted to show a few things on every page, so I added an
application level template in "layouts". I added my styles in there,
and put the controller name and action name into the TITLE tag for my
own reference. So far so good - works like expected. Then I wanted to

Links on the left hand side - are components necessary?

Maybe this is super-trivial...
I need to have a list of links on the left hand side of my application,
for *every* single page.
So, I''ve created a layout called "main" (main.rhtml) under
view/layouts, and included >layout "main"< in pretty all of my
controllers.

Why does no one like render_component?
Maybe I''m missing the point?
Lets take for example albums of pictures. If I have a scaffold for
each, and I''m showing an album, what if I want to list all of the
pictures that are in the album?
Surely, I''d want to call the List action in the picture controller.
render_component would do this perfectly. But we''re told not to use
render_component. So

Silly newb question. Is there a reason why :layout is unimplemented
in render_component() ? I''m looking at a situation where that would

Menu Helper
