Apache 2.x: Use fcgid or Mongrel?
Hi, There''s lots of stuff going on currently with choices of production
deployment environments. But I''m not clear on a few things as I need to
decide on a production setup where Apache is a given.
A recent thread (http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/56590) seemed to favor
Apache 2 with mod_fcgid. And this is supported in articles such as:

[mod_fcgid] 503 server temporarily unavailable
Hi There,
Every now and then, and recently more and more we get a "503 server
temporarily unavailable" error from our rails app.
We are running Rails 1.0 with mod_fcgid in Apache 2.0.54 on Debian
The thing is I don''t think we have such a heavy load on the server, and
I haven''t seen this error occur at all outside the rails app. In fact I
don''t think I ever

Ruby on Rails on Linux - Any suggestions/Help?
Hi, I''m really new to RoR and I''m trying to setup a development or even
production server for Ruby on Rails.
I''m trying to do it on Linux Debian, but somehow, I always get this Error:
Application Error - Rails application failed to start properly
This was running on Debian Linux, Apache2, Mysql and FastCGI.

sessions failing on debian apache2 fast_cgi
Hi All,
So I just pushed our rails app to our production server, but I''ve
encountered a number of problems.
Firstly the fast_cgi processes seem to be eating up a hell of a lot of
memory, at times max out our 1gig of RAM. I''ve switched back to cgi for
the moment, but independently of that sessions seem to be failing
intermitently.
The session will hold itself stable for a

I can''t get mod_fcgid to work
Hi,
I just installed mod_fcgid on my apache2 server.
When I try to load my application I get an
"Application error - Rails application failed ..." message.
In my Apache2 error-log it says:
Premature end of script headers dispatch.fcgi
mod_fcgid process /data/www/app/dispacth.fcgi exit (communication
error),
terminated by calling exit(), return code 1
Any help with this would be

FastCGI vs. Simple CGI
I''ve seen several postings where FastCGI is being used with RoR
projects, yet, most of the material I''ve read (Dave Thomas'' book, online
articles, etc) recommend not using FastCGI anymore because it is a
dormant project and hasn''t been updated since 2003 (I think???).
So, I went out and got Simple CGI instead. It had to be compiled and
installed from

Runaway FCGI Processes with Debian, Apache
Hi all.
There is an issue with Rails, FastCGI and Apache2 on
Debian that I''ve been dealing with since I started
Rails development in late 2005. I''ve developed
various workarounds but have not been able to solve
the problem at the root.
Every so often, for reasons I''ve never been able to
determine, a load of dispatch.fcgi processes get
spawned and take over my whole

my Rails app "freezes" everytime I log out from SSH
Hi there,
I''ve a Rails app running on one of my shared hosting accounts.
Everytime I log out from SSH, my Rails application shows this error
message after 5-10 minutes:
"Application Error (Rails)"
Whenever I log back in to SSH with my account, my site is back to
normal. I''ve Googled everywhere for days and tried all of these
suggestions:

FastCGI in Shared Hosting - What To Do?
Hello Campers!
I am working on Site5, trying to get a working Camping application
running. Unfortunately, my sole option in terms of deployment is FastCGI.
I have no access to sudo so I cannot create ScriptAliases.
I''ve taken the Camping Short Short Example and uploaded it, along with a
dispatch.fcgi and an .htaccess file.
My question is - given the state of Camping development right

FastCGI times out?
Hello there,
So I''m still struggling with this fastcgi stuff. I''m trying to upload and
process a decent sized ZIP file, but the request dies before it finishes and
I get the following error:
FastCGI: comm with (dynamic) server

read) idle timeout (30 sec), referer: http://photos/album/new/4

Finally got fcgi installed with apache. Now whe I click on "About your
application''s environment" on the Rails Welcome page, it simply prints
out the dispatch.fcgi script as shown below. I would appreciate any help
I can get on this. I can provide other infomation if necessary.

about PATH_INFO and FastCGI
in one of my recent email, I add .to_s to PATH_INFO in camping code.
actually, this is probably very wrong. the problem is probably something
like PATH_INFO does not exist when using FastCGI.
I have not done all my homework, but so far what I found is lighttpd has a
special option
"broken-scriptfilename": breaks SCRIPT_FILENAME in a wat that PHP can
extract PATH_INFO from it (default:

RE: Relocating the directory for ruby_sess.* files
Please, someone can tell me where session data are stored on Windows, using
Webrick in its default configuration?
After storing an object into @session, I initially can access only the
controller that has stored the object. Otherwise, the html page displays
"Not found" and the Webrick console displays:

Problem uploading files (possibly an OS X issue?)
I have a running Rails application that uploads files back to the
server occasionally. I recently switched my development machine from a
Linux box to OS X 10.5, using the Apache server built-in on OS X and
mod_fcgid. I thought everything was fine until I recently tried to use
the file upload feature. If I specify a reasonable sized (164 Kb) file
for upload then I get an immediate error, before my
