freezeing the ext3 filesystem
Hi, I discovered that SGI XFS for Linux har a utility called xfs_freeze, which freezes the filsystem and makes sure that the filesystem is consistant. It is a bit like a mount -o remount,ro but it does not fail when applications have open files. When we take snapshots of our XFS volume, we do "xfs_freeze -f /mnt/foo; lvcreate -s /dev/vg_foo/bar /dev/vg_foo/bar-snapshot;xfs_freeze -u

lenny amd64 and xen.
I''ve installed debian lenny amd64, it is frozen now. I''ve install kernel for xen support but it doesn''t start. It says "you need to load kernel first" but I''ve installed all the packages concerning xen, also packages related to the kernel. Perhaps lenny doesn''t support xen anymore? Any solution?

LVM-snapshot based KVM VMs
Good m/d/n guys, wanted to put idea through you before trying to implement this. So afaik LVM snapshots basically don't take any "real" space on hard drives. I'm using KVM virtualization on my hosts and let's say i create an LVM volume for my linux VM, then install it properly, shut it down and take LVM snapshot of it. Basically i've just cloned it (LVM2 snapshots are

LVM over Xen + Network
Hi, We are planning to have LVM being used over a network of 3 h/w machines(500 GB Disk each) Each hardware machine will have 2-3 domUs. Can we store these domUs as a Logical Volumes stored across Network of these 3 machines? Can one DomU exceed the 500 GB (physical drive size) and store say 1 TB of data across the networked Physical Volumes? Has anyone done this before? Thanks and regards,

Query: Filesystems
Hello, Just a few quick, but not very simple questions...: Do any Linux filesystems (besides XFS) support freezing? (ie. in conjuction with LVM snapshots this can allow a mounted filesystem to be frozen [freezing all processes writing to this filesystem] in a valid state (with possibly dangling unlinked files), the device can be snapshotted via LVM, and the original filesystem unfrozen - the

best ways to do mysql backup
we have multiple servers approx 10 and each has about 100 GB of data in the /var/lib/mysql dir , excluding tar , mysqldump and replication how do we take backup for these databases on to a remote machine and store them datewise , ( the remote machine is a 2TB HDD ) currently tar is not feasible as the data is too huge and the same goes with mysqldump suggestion will be of great help --

Paravirtualized Linux with graphics (X Window)?
Hi, Anybody please tell me how to have a PV Linux with graphics? I succesfully created some PV Linux with debootstrap and xen-tools. But then all the images must be started with "xm create -c" command, and everything then is console, with no X Window. In short, I want to have PV Linux, but with X. How to do that? Thanks, H _______________________________________________ Xen-users

snapshots on xen
Hi all. I''m using sles11 for my xen servers. I would really like to be able to do hot snapshots of disk AND memory, and then have these snapshots backed up to tape or off site for disaster recovery. I''m thinking this would be done weekly or monthly, not nightly. Two questions: 1) Is this even possible? 2) I could probably have the systems shutdown to make a clean backups, but

HA Xen on 2 servers!! No NFS, special hardware, DRBD or iSCSI...
I''ve been brainstorming... I want to create a 2-node HA active/active cluster (In other words I want to run a handful of DomUs on one node and a handful on another). In the event of a failure I want all DomUs to fail over to the other node and start working immediately. I want absolutely no single-points-of-failure. I want to do it with free software and no special hardware. I want

FAQ: How to backup for recovery?
Hi! DomUs can be backed up just fine, and there''s no problem to restore files as long as the DomU boots. Now I wonder how to recover hard (desaster recovery)... Backing up the disk images or partitions (from Dom0) seems to be not an option, because there are changes to them all the time, so incremental backups would always save them, and all saves would be inconsistent. Now the idea

How (not) to destroy a PostgreSQL db in domU on powerfail
Now I''m sure that the following configuration can destroy a PostgreSQL 8.3.5 database: * Linux host (dom0) with XEN, XFS filesystem with "nobarrier", RAID controller with battery backed cache. * XEN vm (domU) with XFS filesystem with "nobarrier" with postgresql * my daughter with 3.5 years switching off the power supply of the server, just behind the UPS Seems XEN

iSCSI and LVM
Hi Everyone, I am going to get a storage server which will be connected to my Xen hosts via iSCSI/Ethernet. I wish to use LVM for the DomU disks. The storage server will have a RAID10 array, and 2 Xen hosts will connect to this (Each will have a 50% share of the RAID10 array, space wise). What is the best way to go about this? Should I: a) Split the RAID10 array into 2 partition on the

development machine with xen on gentoo
Hi all. We just put a relative large server in operation (for our measures ;-) ), a 4x Dual Core / Intel with 16GB Ram and a 3ware 9550SX SATA-RAID with 4 drives. Operating system for the Dom0 is an up-to-date gentoo linux. Everything runs really fine, there are 4 Domu''s running, 1x gentoo and 2x debian and 1x Windows Server 2003. DomU''s are running blazing fast in normal

AoE LVM2 DRBD Xen Setup
Hello everybody, I am in the process of setting up a really cool xen serverfarm. Backend storage will be an LVMed AoE-device on top of DRBD. The goal is to have the backend storage completely redundant. Picture: |RAID| |RAID| |DRBD1| <----> |DRBD2| \ / |VMAC| | AoE | |global LVM VG| / | \ |Dom0a| |Dom0b| |Dom0c| | |

Problems booting a 32bit domU kernel on a Debian sarge amd64 x86_64 dom0 host.
I installed Debian sarge amd64 on a Intel em64t processor machines and have been using the Xen 3.0 packages in backports.org. I can boot a 32 bit guest OS fine if I use the vmlinuz-2.6.16-1-xen-em64t-p4kernel, but when trying to use the stock vmlinuz-2.6.16-xen from their binary tarball, or building it from the source package I get the following error: xentest:/var/log# xm create debian0.cfg -c
