to AD or not to AD
Greetings folks,
I'm currently using the latest samba 3.x versions but my servers
are in an NT4 domain which has a trust relationship with an AD
in mixed mode. This has worked flawlessly for the past few years
(I started with samba 2.x series).
I am heavily considering getting rid of the domain and just moving
my servers into the AD itself. Are there any pitfalls I should be
wary of in

SMB/CIFS vs DFS
Hello,
I am running Mandrake 8.0
I am installing & upgrading to Samba 3.0.28
I just finished reading IBM's Redbook "Open Your
Windows with Samba on Linux" (redp3780). I'd like to
know, what is the best configuration between SMB/CIFS
& DFS, in a Linux (servers) & Windows
(clients/workstations) network. Even though I read the
Redbook, it still not clear as to which

Adding samba clients to samba server
I have an application that requires the use of netbios names instead of IP
addresses, and the company that produces the application says that's the
way it is.
I have a Windows XP machines running the application, and I want to add it
to a domain controller. I have a Centos 5 machine onto which I've
installed Samba and configured it to be a DC. I now want to add a couple

static wins entries -- entries change after restart of corresponding Samba server
I am trying to use static wins entries, as stated in the Official Samba
Howto Collection.
One Samba server (VServer) is with wins service enabled. Another
(Server1) is not, but it has the wins server in its smb.conf.
When I set wins.dat at VServer:

ANNOUNCE: [MAINT] Unplanned network outage
Hi,
My ISP had an unplanned network outage starting around 2am this morning
that took all connectivity offline -- their router ran out of memory and
took out all BGP routes. Their router has since been rebooted and packets
are now flowing again.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

ANNOUNCE: [MAINT] Unplanned network outage Saturday/Sunday
Hi,
Many of you may have noticed that it was pretty quiet over the weekend.
AT&T (my ISP) had a fiber cut around 1am Saturday Night (Sunday Morning)
that took out my network. They kept pushing the expected resolution until
5am today, but the network was repaired at 7:09pm last night at which
point everything should have come back.
This outage affected code, which runs email, wiki, and git

Rsync from windows to unix
Hi,
I'm trying to use rsync from Windows to Unix.
I've followed the directions on :
http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/help/rsync/rsync_pc1.html
I can see ssh running on the windows machine, because
I tested it using telnet localhost 22 and I can see
the result "SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.4p1".
But when I try
"$ rsync -avz -e ssh user@windowsserver::/rsync/* ."
from the Linux

Gang,

BDD screenscast
I posted a quick screencast demonstrating some BDD with RSpec yesterday:

I''m a C/Objective-C programmer who knows a bit of Ruby, almost
nothing about Rails, and in BDD I can really only claim "new but
interested" status.
It''s not scripted, it''s totally improvised and

Samba BDC and mirroring Homes
We have samba 2.0.0 running on Solaris 2.6 (Sparc)
sharing out various directories and user homes.
Recently I've set it up for Win98 logins and all
this is working fine. Unfortunately this also
means that if the server has to go down so do the
clients, as we're pushing the users to use the
server as much as possible.
My question is what would be the best way to set
up a Backup Samba

Lies wide open ...!
Being as a Windows geek tho, I consider Linux as a more powerful server
operating system than Windows. When I saw OS comparison at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/compare/linux/server-security.mspx I
was shocked! Showed it to a friend and he felt like being brainwashed :D
lol.
What do you fellows think about this?
Thanks.

a similar machine using rsync backups running 6 times a day on various
directories in /home/. The inital rsync copied roughly 150gb. Everything
appears to be backing up correctly so no loss of data which is good :)
The problem is that he backup server is not removing data that has been removed
