How does layouts work?
When creating a scaffold you get a layout file. How does it work? I
thought I would find the var @content_for_layout in the controller, but
I didn''t. Where is layouts defined or controlled?

Don''t understand :: in ActionController::Base
Maybe this should apply to Ruby forums directly, but I''ll try here.
I understand the concept of classes and subclasses thanks to the
excellent "Programming Ruby - The Pragmatic Programmer''s Guide".
However, I don''t understand what :: signify in terms of inheritance,
parent and child in e.g.

Table names
Can I use the table name "adm_users" (mysql)? Will that give the model
name "adm_user"? Or should it be "admusers" and "admuser"?

Scaffold generator: create vs. new
Can anyone supply me with a simple, succinct explanation of what the
difference is between the "new" controller and the "create" controller
that the scaffold generator produces?
I run:
> script/generate scaffold modelname controllername
And now I need to do some work inside the controllername.rb file. For
example, pulling a list from another database table to supply

New to rails - scaffold command , how to get related items?
Ahoy,
I was able to follow the tutorials and build a simple to-do list program
with Items and Categories and have the related tables link up w/ the
default "scaffold :Items" command plus custom defenitions.
Then I erased all of that and tried rebuilding the program using the
ruby script/generate scaffold Item (and category) command.
Now the templates look like

Scaffold command, how and what may be wrong?
hi everyone. I am learning RoR and just recently purchase the agile wed
dev on rails. i am still at the beginning of the book trying to create
the scaffold for the depot_development database. Everytime i run the
generate scaffold products admin, i recieve the "before building the
scaffold, try to create a table for model products" etc...
a few questions:
1. How does ruby know that

scaffold misuse?
Running ruby script/generate scaffold Product Admin
is a wonderful way to set up well, exactly what it says, a scaffold.
My problem is that I have several other tables that are linked,
through foreign keys, to the Product table. Say an "authors" table.
Now when I go enter a new product, a book, I want the application to
provide a drop down list of authors generated from the records in

scaffolding generators and pluralization rules
I''ve been working through the "Rolling with Ruby on Rails" tutorial and have come up against something I''m hoping someone here can help me understand.
In part two of the tutorial, Curt introduces the "ruby script\generate scaffold re

Starting on the Ruby Rails path
Hi all, I''m a web designer/-developer. I found Ruby and Ruby on Rails,
and as I can understand (for now) this is what I''ve been looking for.
I''m really exited about this. Prior to this I''ve used Lasso and PHP.
But a few questions (sitting on Mac OS 10.4.6). I tried to install

Migration newbie
In an migration file there is one up and one down method. Below is from
Agile Web Development with Rails:
class CreateOrderHistories < ActiveRecord::Migration
def self.up
create_table :order_histories do |t|
t.column :order_id, :integer, :null => false
t.column :created_at, :timestamp
t.column :notes, :text
end
end
def self.down
drop_table :order_histories
end
end
Why is there a drop

Scaffolding support for many-to-many editing (habtm)?
Like with simple table editing, there are also typical ways of how a
user usually interacts with one-to-many or many-to-many relations. For
example, one would show the fields of one row of table1 in the screen
and below a line-by-line view of all associated entries in table2. Then,
one could press an "Edit" button and add or delete rows from table2 to
this entry of table1,

Are there any other tutorial than "Agile Web Development with Rails"

How dows RoR work?
This is so frustrating. Is RoR that easy to learn or is it hype or is it
just me? I wonder how many newbies like me are surfing the docs trying
to get a clue of the basics. Every tutorial I find is much the same, and
seems to skip the fundmental parts. How should you understand the Ruby
API http://api.rubyonrails.org/?

[PLUGIN] rspec_resource_generator - RESTful scaffold generator with RSpec specifications
rspec_resource_generator
========================
By Pat Maddox
Use this generator to generate RESTful scaffolding with RSpec specifications.
Syntax is exactly the same as the scaffold_resource generator:
./script/generate rspec_resource ModelName [field:type field:type]
When you run this generator, it will create a migration, model, and
model spec file. In addition, it gives you a RESTful
