Xen system hang or freeze
Hi all,
This is my first post to the list, I hope someone out there can help!
I am running xen 3.0.3, with CentOS 5.2 based Dom0
(kernel-xen-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5)
Recently I have noticed some complete system lockups on a few different
servers. Neither Dom0 or any of the guests respond to pings, connecting a
keyboard and monitor to the system only shows a blank screen. Nothing is
written to logs

snapshots on xen
Hi all. I''m using sles11 for my xen servers. I would really like to be
able to do hot snapshots of disk AND memory, and then have these
snapshots backed up to tape or off site for disaster recovery. I''m
thinking this would be done weekly or monthly, not nightly.
Two questions:
1) Is this even possible?
2) I could probably have the systems shutdown to make a clean backups,
but

Xen backups using LVM Snapshots
Hi all,
I am running Xen 3.2-1 / 2.6.18 on Debian Etch (Dom0).
I setup a Dom0 with several DomUs (Linux). Each DomU disk is a LV partition. I have been seeing a few mails about backups and LVM and just wanted to make sure that what I am doing is correct.
Each DomU with a database has a cron that dumps the db with mysqldump. Later on, Dom0 will do an LVM Snapshot of all DomUs and then do a

Disable memory balloon in dom0
Is there any reason why I would not want to set dom0-min-mem to 0 or to
what I set dom0_mem on my kernel line? Setting to 0 or setting to the
same value as dom0_mem disables memory balloon correct? I cant seem to
think of a reason why I would want memory ballooning.
Also setting dom0-min-mem should that be done in xend-config.sxp or on
the kernel command line?

Backup domU
Hi all,
I''m doing my first xen,
running with 3
domU perfect.
I need to know which way to
backup domU to restore these
to another server if i''ve problem
with this machine.
There
are 3 LVM with 10G
in VolGroup01 for each domU, with each
of these partitions:
/dev/xvda3 8,7G 1,4G 6,9G 17%

Xen and SAN : snapshot XOR live-migration ?
Please tell me if I am wrong :
Xen needs LVM to perform domU snapshots and snapshots must be performed
by dom0.
By the way, a LVM volume group should not be used by more that one
kernel at the same time. So if we use a SAN storage, one volume group
should be activated on only one server and deactivated on the others.
But if we do that, it should not be possible to perform live migration

Tools to take a kernel crash dump.
Hello Everyone,
We have noticed that one of our servers xen Dom0 is restarting
idiopathically. Atleast, we are not able to analyze the cause. I have
checked the logs but couldn''t find anything relating to it.
Are there any tools such as kdump (which doesn''t seem to work on xenified
kernels) for catching the kernel crash snapshot.

Partition vs disk images
I realize this might be one of those religious topics, but is there any good
rule of thumb as to how to setup storage for a Xen domU? Without really
knowing any better, I''m basically going to make a disk image of the OS and
the create a ''data'' partition on my raid 5 volume for each virtual machine.
This is for use at home, so in reality it probably doesn''t

development machine with xen on gentoo
Hi all.
We just put a relative large server in operation (for our measures ;-)
), a 4x Dual Core / Intel with 16GB Ram and a 3ware 9550SX SATA-RAID
with 4 drives. Operating system for the Dom0 is an up-to-date gentoo linux.
Everything runs really fine, there are 4 Domu''s running, 1x gentoo and
2x debian and 1x Windows Server 2003. DomU''s are running blazing fast in

Backing up Xen DomU''s - Tape Drive - LVM
Hi,
I am planning the roll out of a Xen dom0 running CentOS that is going to
be running two DomU''s CentOS and Windows 2003 SBS. I am planning on
using LVM for the disks as this (so i have read) increases i/o
performance compared to image files.
I need a solution to back up these machines and I have came up with the
following two ideas:
Idea 1,
Backup the machines as images (lvm

LVM2 snapshots and XEN = problem :(
Hello guys
Does anyone use lvm2 backends for domU storages ? I do and I wanted to
use lvm''s snapshot feature to make backups of domUs in background but I
got the following problem.
When I create a snapshot LV and copy data from it to backup storage it
works perfect.
Then I do umount and then lvremove. lvremove asks me if I really want to
remove the volume and then just hangs forever.

can I clone a runiung domU?
Hi all
I''d like to know if it''s possible to clone a running domU. I need to
make an exact copy of an existing CentOS xen domU, but without taking it
offline. I''m using LVM, so I don''t know if it will help.
I have tried doing it with dd, after shutting down the domU, but it
takes ages. The LVM image is 30GB. I can''t really afford to have the

About tape drive.
Hello Everyone.
Well i want to write some information (not a complete
backup) from my Virtual Machine to the tape drive, but
the VM can''t read it.
I guess i need to attach this device to the VM so it
can read and write the tape driver but i don''t know
how to do that, i found something similar but with a

newbie questions: copying and cloning xen vm
Hi all,
I started studying xen to implement some HA cluster hosting multiple guests.
I am realizing that xen does not provide any native way to hot-clone or
hot-backup a guest.
Am I right ?
Is there any way to how backup a virtual machine? Or is suspend - copy -
resume the only possible tecnique ?
Is there any way to clone a virtual machine?
Do vm snapshots exists?
Thank you for every answer!

XEN and clustering?
Hi.
I''m using Xen on RHEL cluster, and I have strange problems. I gave raw
volumes from storage to Xen virtual machines. With windows, I have a
problem that nodes don''t see the volume as same one.... for example:
clusternode1# clusvcadm -d vm:winxp
clusternode1# dd if=/dev/mapper/winxp of=/node1winxp
clusternode2# dd if=/dev/mapper/winxp of=/node2winxp
clusternode3# dd

Questions on qcow, qcow2 versus LVM
I''ve been using lvm under centos to create the backing store for domUs and
although the performance seems acceptable it has some shortcomings. The
biggest of which is the LVM bug which prevents me from removing an lv (it
says it is still mounted and it definitely isnt). I thought this was just
a centos bug but it appears to be evident in debian and ubuntu too and I
really can''t

creating domU''s consumes 100% of system resources
Hello,
I have noticed that when I use xen-create-image to generate an domU, the
whole server (dom0 and domU''s) basically hangs until it is finished. This
happens primarily during the creation of the ext3 filesystem on an LVM
partition.
This creation of the file system can take up to 4 or 5 minutes. At which
point, any other domU''s are basically paused... tcp connections time

Guests - Debian Etch.
Performed following steps to create duplicate guest, a mail server.
1)
# cp /etc/xen/guest-1.cfg /etc/xen/guest-2.cfg
edit guest-2.cfg changing the settings of:-

Consistent snapshots
Hi!
How do i create consistent snapshots of VM''s from Dom0?. What are the backup
methods or snapshot/snaprestore methods that are followed for Xen Virtual
environments?.
thoughts/ideas?.
