Generation SQL from Migrations
Anyone here able to generate the DDL SQL for performing migrations w/
out actually modifying the DB schema? As part of our process, we''d
like to be able to write the migrations and produce the DDL and then
have our data services folks verify and make changes according to
naming conventions, etc.
Aside from grabbing the SQL migration log following a "live"
migration - I

Specifying a Form name using start_/form_tag
Hey all.
I''m trying use the form tag(s) to create a named / id''d form. I.e.,
I need to use JS to access the form via the DOM and submit it -
support for a reusable navigation component which will persist app
state on each jump.
However, from reading the form_tag APIs and searching google, I don''t
see where either :name or :id is an option which can be passed

WebObjects-style Object Cache
Hey Guys,
Here''s the scenario:
I have a model Page and every page has multiple page_parts. So,
there''s a form for editing a Page and all of it''s parts and when you
submit the form all of your changes are saved. There''s an action that
handles the post that saves the page and all the parts.
def handle_post

Request for Proposal: On-Site Rails Training
Don''t let the bureaucratic aspects of this RFP bother you: we''re eager
to find and work with a good trainer to get our developers up to speed
on RoR, and there''s a possibility of a paid Rails-evangelist gig as
well. If that sounds like something you would be interested in and
qualified for, I hope you will get in touch with us and submit a
proposal. --Chris

attachment_fu and S3 -- cannot download file correctly
I don''t know why this isn''t working. If I download a word doc that I
uploaded, all I get is the S3 file path in the document. If I access
the s3 file path directly in my browser, it downloads the file
correctly.
Here is my controller method:
def download

Survey Package with Binary Data (no Standard Errors reported)
Hi,
I'm trying to get standard errors for some of the variables in my data
frame. One of the questions on my survey is whether faculty coordinate
across curriculum to include Arts Education as subject matter. All the
responses are coded in zeros and ones obviously. For some of the other
variables I have a 2 for those that responded with "Don't Know".
I'm getting NA for

Many To Many''s Join table attributes + migrations
Hi all,
just joined and have only just kicked off with Rails (coming, but not
departing, from WebObjects development). And so far there seems to be
a lot of promise except for one thing I can''t figure out as yet --
the above problem.
Say I have the following conceptual relationships:
ITEMS <<--->> CARTS
i.e., each item can belong to one or more categories. So really

R and Sound
Hello,
I recently have started to learn about R, and am interested in using
it to generate data that would then get used to produce audio.
Basically, I am "envisioning" using R to create the data, based on
probability functions (and fractal data), which then gets output as a
text data file, and then processed by CSound to produce the finished
audio.
My interests are based on some of

Building a Search Page as part of CRUD
I''ve been experimenting with Rails over the past couple of days and
have come across something that seems harder than it should be. In
previous frameworks I have used (WebObjects, php) a full search page
(which leads into a list view populated with search results) was part
of the CRUD that was either dynamically or statically created after
specifying table/object schema. In

Rails in High School Curriculum?
Hi folks,
I''m working with a local high school in the Portland, OR area on the
subject of computer science curriculum. We are thinking of introducing
a class in web development and I think Rails would be a perfect vehicle.
I''ve done some searching on the web but haven''t found any suggestion of
HS curriculum for Rails. Any pointers or suggestions?
Thanks,

RoR VS Rails ???
I didn''t get a chance to go to this meeting debating WebObjects Vs
Rails, but here''s a report about it:
http://desperatepundit.com/blog/cremes/technology/2006/02/15/WebObjects-versus-Ruby-On-Rails.html
I don''t get what he''s saying, hand coding the model? yeah, you COULD ...
but what about script/generate ???
And is that so what he said about security?

Fwd: Re: [friday topic]: what exactly is statistical computing
This is a very fascinating discussion topic. I find I run into
some fundamental differences in interpretation of the phrase "statistical
computing". I think of it as writing programs or functions, such as R or packages
in R, and of understanding the numerical analysis behind these functions.
I exclude USING computer programs, such as R, for data analysis from my
definition of
