virtual machine lvm issues during install
Hi everyone, I think I know what the issue is here but I''m looking for some confirmation. I setup a fresh system, and I made one large lvm for my system just thinking it''d be easier overall, and since this is more of a test system, it wouldn''t be a big deal. I can get all the way to the point of the install, to where it starts to format the system with the

Removing non existent pool
I grabbed a spare disc to make a root mirror with and it happened to have an old rpool from another installation on it. Anyway, it also seemed to have an EFI label, so I removed the partition, re-labeled it to SMI and created a Solaris II partition etc and made my mirror. While importing a pool from another controller''s set of discs, I noticed an `rpool import` enumerated the old rpool

Install on two discs with Software Raid and LVM
I am mirroring two drives during install, what's the best practice here for the swap partition? Maybe two separate lv's from independent vg's *not* mirrored for swap and the let the OS manage it? Boot and the / vg will be mirrored. Thanks! jlc

migrate from physical disk problems in xen
I''ve been trying to migrate a win nt 4 machine to a xen domu for the past few months with no success. However, on my current attempt, the original hardware no longer boots, so I''m trying to resolve the issues with xen properly, or else take a long holiday... Anyway, the physical machine had a 9G drive (OS drive), a 147 G drive (not in use) and a 300G drive (all SCSI Ultra320 on

Help with a good recovery plan.. Linux rescue?
Hello All, I have a machine that crashed. Some part of the motherboard (power supply-related) went south. The motherboard, CPU and memory have been replaced with a much newer architecture. The OS and data are intact on two SATA drives that were RAID1 with LVM. I am going to use 'linux rescue' to recover the LVM backup so I can mount the RAIDs (there were two) in a new CentOS

Hi, folks! Does anyone knows how could I install some new packages on CentOS (4 and 5) using the cdrom media? Att: My HD doesn't have much space to copy cdrom content to build a filesystem repository. I hope this great tool will should ask me by each cdrom witch it need, isn't it? Thanks in advance. Xen HVM images on VMware ESX
Hi everyone, I''m trying to convert some Xen HVM images to run on VMware ESX, unsuccessfully thus far. I believe the problem is that ESX by default wants the VMs to use SCSI virtual disks, but my HVM VMs are configured to use IDE virtual disks. If you have any experience with this sort of thing, please get in touch. Thanks! Diwaker -- http://floatingsun.net/

ZFS (and quota)
I''m CCing zfs-discuss at opensolaris.org, as this doesn''t look like FreeBSD-specific problem. It looks there is a problem with block allocation(?) when we are near quota limit. tank/foo dataset has quota set to 10m: Without quota: FreeBSD: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/tank/test bs=512 count=20480 time: 0.7s Solaris: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/tank/test bs=512 count=20480 time: 4.5s

Old hd, new machine
What should I do to make an existing CentOS (5.4) disc boot up on a new computer? I just made on CentOS 5.3 installation on that machine, so I know the hardware is compatible. Would it be enough to boot with a DVD in rescue mode, or boot with another hd, and install grub? - Jussi -- Jussi Hirvi * Green Spot Topeliuksenkatu 15 C * 00250 Helsinki * Finland Tel. +358 9 493 981 * Mobile +358

Removing a disc from a software mirror
If I needed to remove a disc from a software mirror for a quick backup before a test, how can I remove it cleanly so that it has a good copy of the OS on it? If I use mdadm to fail then remove it, this would be done while CentOS is running (It's a mirror of the system disc) and I suspect the data on it would not be in a clean state? Is there a way to say have it not involved in the mirror
