Capistrano - disable_web and enable_web with lighty?
I was using lighty+fastcgi before, and it was working pretty well, but
I decided to move to Apache+mongrel because I really really like
Mongrel. Well now I found out about lighty+pound+mongrel [1] and I
think I''m going to give that a shot. I definitely prefer lighty to
Apache - it''s pretty ridiculous how much fewer resources it uses.
Anyway the only thing I''m going to

Lighty + Mongrel?
On httpd I use ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse to forward requests to
webrick and mongrel. How can I do this same thing using Lighty and
Mongrel?
Thanks,

Global Method Declaration?
Is there a place where I can put a method that can be accessed in both
views and controllers?
Here''s the situation, maybe someone can suggest a better way to go about this:
I created my own custom login system with email verification and user
roles (basically, I tinkered around with SaltedHashLoginGenerator
until I finally gave up and wrote my own). One role, of course, is an

Symlinks in Capistrano?
I have a few projects with large directories (say, user-uploaded files) that
make using Capistrano a bit awkward. However, I suspect that I may have
reached the "write a custom task" level.
(I suppose I''m just thinking out loud, here...)
It seems as though I''d want this directories symlinked in /shared... Maybe
there''s a way to extend the

newbie before_filter question
I''ve successfully gotten acts_as_authenticated working. Currently the
before_filter line for my admin screen is like this:
class AdminController < ApplicationController
include AuthenticatedSystem
before_filter :login_required
Only issue I have now is that anyone logged in can access that screen.
I''d like to differentiate between a regular user and

Apache, Mongrel, Authentication
A question about mongrel, apache and authentication.
I''ve got a Rails site with I think a very typical setup: a mongrel
cluster behind an Apache proxy. So Apache''s handling the static stuff
and it hands off dynamic content to mongrel. I want to put the site
temporarily behind Apache''s basic authentication. What I get when I
do this is that is a password prompt which

Capistrano/SVN: Deploying different database.yml for live?
Greetings,
Today I''ve been working out how to begin using Capistrano and so far I''m
impressed. Even in my situation, learning Rails and deploying to a
single server, it''s incredibly helpful. I do have one small question
though:
In using Subversion I''ve used the "ignore" feature to ignore my local
database.yml file, because my local database and

Deploying with Capistrano via cron
I''m attempting to auto deploy a rails application to a development
server periodically during ongoing development. I''ve setup ssh keys
to allow the proper user auto login permissions, but have ran into 2
issues.
1. When the script is run from a cron job as the same user as I
currently manually deploy from I receive an error when reaper tries to
execute - "can''t

Switching databases in Rails v1.0 app
Hello, I need some guidance. I have a need to:
a) Login, validating against a "system-level" user database - no big
deal, then
b) Depending upon the login, select a customer database for processing.
For instance, assume that my login profile lists an area of interest:
cars, motorcycles or boats. Each of these has a database, with identical
table formats. If my login shows my area of

Restricting access to files uploaded by file_column
Hi Guys,
Does anyone know how to restrict access on files that you upload in file
column to certain users only? I notice that files being saved by the
file_column by default are being saved under the public folder and can
be accessed just by typing the URL directly. Let''s say you have a Login
system where you restrict access to some pages and allow those users to
upload their own

login_generator Restricting Specific Users
I have created a ''admin'' controller and all the necessary definitions
and templates to delete, update and edit records and this is working OK,
but how do I effectively restrict access to these defs'' from all but the
admin user (called admin)?
Currently I am just using if statements within the defs'' to check if it
is the admin user logged in e.g;
def index

Admin and standard controllers RESTFully
Hello. I will appreciate the opinion.
What is the standard way of separating admin functions from normal-
user functions?
before_filter in one controller?
Use two controllers, i.e. ProductController and Admin/
ProductController?
I want to use map.resources so RESTFul would be better.

Mongrel/Apache and static content
I''m looking for an easy way to have mongrel only serve dynamic railscontent, while letting Apache serve non-Rails content. Unfortunately,it seems that you have to segregate the static content in its ownfolder. That was also the case with the SCGI runner. I used thetrick outlined athttp://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.ruby.rails/23347 to managethis. I was curious if a similar

RoR and Growing Pains
I have persuaded my company to move towards an RoR shop... from a PHP 5
(with in-house-built framework)... so the jump is not terribly bad. I''m
REALLY excited actually!
My problem: I am overwhelmed with all the setup Loops I have to jump
through to get RoR setup. I tried it on my current Apache 1.34 and
decided it''d be easier to make the Lighty (1.4.11) jump. So I did. I get

What methods do people use to notify users of upcoming downtime in an

Capistrano: command never finishes?
Hi,
I have created a small :restart task to overwrite the default one:
task :restart, :roles => :app do
sudo "/etc/init.d/lighttpd stop"
sudo "/etc/init.d/lighttpd start"
end
This works fine and lighty does restart, but the last command never
finishes, so I never return to the prompt. Here''s my output:
cap restart

which webserver to use in production?
Apologies in advance if this ignites a war of comflicting opinions....
I''m a few days away from going live with my first RoR application. It
is completely database centric and each user will have his own queries
so cacheing will not really help.
I have a dedicated linux server being built by my hosting provider and I
need to tell them which webserver to use. The databse is MySQL
