more questions: human_name
One more question: Is there some way to set the human_name of a column? e.g.: human_name for column address1 shouldn''t be Address1 but "Address, line 1". If not, should I make a hash with my custom names? 9cays - A Rails app for Group Email
Even though it''s a little OT, I thought I''d announce the free public beta of a new Rails app that I''ve been working on for a while: http://9cays.com Think of it as mini-mailing list software. For a lot of smallish conversations, normal mailing list are too heavyweight (requiring setup, moderation, admin, etc.), but group email is a pain because messages

I need to send an email when something happens in my model...
but the model isn''t the right place to send mail from. That just seems like pretty bad coupling, generating emails from within the model. Or is that not a problem? On top of that, these emails need to contain links back to my site...which is a bit of a pain in ActionMailer, but I found directions on http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowtoUseUrlHelpersWithActionMailer however I

Weird Problem With Active Record
Is it me or is my model getting the created_at from the wrong model! I have a HABTM relationship between Problems and Tags. In one of my controller I do the following: def view @tag = Tag.find_by_name @params[:id] end In my view I do this: <% @tag.problems.each do |problem| %> ... <%= problem.created_at %> ... <% end %> Now, how come the created_at

Lighttpd now works for production. Development is broken?
I''ve finally gotten lighttpd working for my production instance (SUSE 10.0 with SSL). (Had to install the fcgi dev toolkit, the SUSE 10 ruby-fcgi rpm, and the fcgi gem. I''m not positive all 3 were required, but that is what I did.) Now the devel instance of my app is broken. I''m not sure how to fix it. Previously I was using WEBrick for both devel and production.

Heavy e-mail receive
Performance experts, Normally to receive e-mails is to pipe their content to script/runner individually from a mail server, sendmail or postfix. Doesn''t this configuration run like Apache 1.3 with CGI, meaning for each e-mail a boot of the entire Rails environment and thus low scalability? Is there anything working like lighttpd-fcgi or going toward its approach? DD -- Posted via

Development Mode on Dreamhost
Anyone know (or know where to point me to) to figure out how to force Rails into development mode? I''d like to not have to kill dispatch.fcgi everytime I make a change. My site is not live and I''m just doing development and testing right now. Thanks. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

going crazy!!!!!! ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in Project
any suggestions on why I am gaining this error. ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in ProjectsController#create Mysql::Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' , , , , )'' at line 1: INSERT INTO projects (`name`, `date_created`, `quote_id`, `client_id`, `description`, `user_id`)

Two developers, one on unix and one on windows
Hello all, An interesting problem, I am developing on Windows, another developer is using Unix, and our app and svn repository are running on a Linux box. We need an easy way to not keep breaking our app and each others development environs when we check in the code. The piece in question is the dispatch.fcgi. The path to ruby is (obviously) different in Windows and Unix. Has anyone run into

"Cannot convert String to Integer" after using association
So, I''ve written a partial that does some stuff with a given instance of my class "entity". Entity is ActiveRecord. I''m able to retrieve all sorts of data from an @entity, until I do something like: <% for @attribute in @entity.attributes %> <div id="attribute_<%= @attribute.id %>"> <%= render(:partial =>

Why you MUST use SCGI for Rails development
Hello happy Railers, I used to develop with a local out-of-the-box Apache and load times were pretty slow (like a few seconds each page). "Well, it''s the price to pay for no compile / cache / etc..." I thought. Nonsense. Yesterday I installed SCGI, and now I''ve got the best of both worlds: rails development env uses my very latest modifications, while SCGI ensures I

instance variable problem
I''m having some trouble with an instance variable being read as nil in my app. I have an image uploading, that can be added to categories. The page loads up initially fine, and if I upload an image without errors everything works fine. I''m working on the validation, but with the code I have if their are validation errors it renders ''new'' again, but reads

Can the has_many create() method return an ID?
Hi all, I have a has_many relationship, Cookbook :has_many Recipes If I want to create a new recipe in my cookbook I do: cookbook.recipes.create(data) It would be nice if I could then easily get the id of the new recipe, but the create() method doesn''t seem to return anything. Any ideas how? Thanks in advance! Cameron -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

remote_function posting?
Hi, I''ve noticed that my remote_function calls are resulting in POST requests. As a result, my routes do not apply since it does not generate a url based on the parameters, but simply posts to the raw url with post data. I want to make a GET request instead of a POST. How can I do that? Has anyone else run into this? Thanks, Ryan -- View this message in context:

Development Environment
I want to be able to code my rails apps either on my Desktop mac or my Powerbook using textmate. I want to build a Debian server that runs lighttpd, rails and mysql. Would I use samba on the server and access the files that way through TextMate or is there something else that folks use? and should I use subversion and if so, how would I do that in the scanario I''m describing.

develop multiple apps simultaneously how?
Hi, I am very early into reading the "Agile Web Development with Rails" book, so this will be a very basic question: I tried starting another app simultaneously with the "depot" app, but when I, after creating the database and the stub project try to start the server, it tells me that the port is in use (of course it is, by the depot application!). Can I tell the server

I''m having trouble installing lighttpd for local development on Mac OS X Tiger. Here are the commands I''ve run: sudo port install fcgi sudo port install lighttpd Here''s a snippet from running "port installed" with several ports removed for brevity: fcgi @2.4.0_1 (active) lighttpd @1.4.9_0 (active) rb-rubygems @0.8.11_0 (active) readline @5.0.005_0+darwin_8
