translating SQL statements into data.table operations
I've recently stumbled across data.table, Matthew Dowle's package. I'm impressed by the speed of the package in handling operations with large data.frames, but am a bit overwhelmed with the syntax. I'd like to express the SQL statement below using data.table operations rather than sqldf (which was incredibly slow for a small subset of my financial data) or import/export with a

puzzled by math on date-time objects
Hi, I don't understand the following. When I create a small artificial set of date information in class POSIXct, I can calculate the mean and the median: a = as.POSIXct(Sys.time()) a = a + 60*0:10; a [1] "2009-03-10 11:30:16 EDT" "2009-03-10 11:31:16 EDT" "2009-03-10 11:32:16 EDT" [4] "2009-03-10 11:33:16 EDT" "2009-03-10 11:34:16

Timezone and date
When I do the date +%Z I get the timezone. Which currently is EDT. I am sending information to another system, that says EDT is not a valid timezone. I have no way to modify the other system. My question is - is there a way to get the non-day-lite savings time zone ? For example EST is valid - EDT is not. Just curious if there is an easy way already present to get a standard time zone. Thanks,

sdate<-as.POSIXct(strptime(date,format="%m/%d/%Y %H:%M"))
Newbie here~ I've spent a ton of time on this, but have to admit I am stuck. I've tried various combinations of strptime and the package CHRON, but still can't get there. My simple task is that I want to plot salinity (S1 or S2) on y-axis and time on x-axis, but I want to use a lay-understandable representation of time (not Julian). If I use the following command, I can make a

as.POSIXct(as.Date()) independent of timezone
Dear R users, I am struggling a bit with the converting dates to full POSIX timestamps, in particular, I would like to somehow force the timezone to be local, i.e. the output of as.POSIXct(as.Date("2008-07-01")) should always be equal to "2008-07-01 00:00:00", is that achievable ? I tried to set the origin and the timezone, neither of which seems to make a difference. On my Mac

Dates - week and year not day.
Hi, I would be very grateful for some advice. I have read the help pages for Date, strptime, etc. All examples seem to use some version of day month year as date format. However I have Weekly composite data so ONLY want to input the dates as Week.Year (eg 35.2011). strptime seems to show this is possible using %W for week (UK convention) and %Y for year. My data is in a df called chlorophyll and

Dialplans & Holiday Dates
I have a working dialplan for our phone system with Mon-Fri, business hours identification, etc. But what I'm lacking right now is support for company holiday dates. What I'd like to do is to create a database of these dates and just update them as new years rollover. I suspect others have done this sort of thing with Asterisk before, but I've not found any resources so far.
