More idiomatic way of writing a filter
Is there a more elegant way of writing this?
def verify_user
@user = User.find_by_username params[:username]
if @user.nil?
message = xml.error do |xm|
xm.message "User does not exists: #{params[:username]}"
end
render :xml => message
return false
else
true
end
end
Thanks, Joel

Spec custom finders
I have some finders in my models where I write some of the sql myself. I
of course want to test these, but am not sure the best way. Should I just
let them roll through to the db, and verify they return the correct
objects based on the fixtures I load, or should I spec the actual query? I
know that DB access is sort of frowned upon, but is this a situation where
it is more or less acceptable? My

uninitialized constant - Please Help Me...
Hello everyone,
I''ve decided to take the step into creating a mini-forum for my
website where users can open new posts on exixting topics and allow
people to discuss things etc...
I am following a tutorial in the book: APRESS - Practical Rails Social
Networking Sites and have hit a minor issue.
Part of the Forum requirements is to add a moderator role to allow

Radio Button events
Hi,
I have observers for a group of radio buttons, an observe_field for each
radio button (I think its not possible to have one observe_field for a
group of radio buttons).
Now, the problem is that when I click on one radio button, all the
observers get trigerred, so the method which the observe_field calls
gets the wrong result. I just want that method to get the radio button

Bug in Firebug or in RJS? Or something else?
I''m getting a really strange result using RJS page.replace_html and wonder if anybody knows anything that could help me figure it out.
I''m rendering a partial in a loop in edit.rhtml that puts a set of <div>s on the page, each <div> containing a checkbox_tag with an associated observe_field and a text_field_tag also with an associated observe_field. When the

observe_field with dynamic forms
I have a form where I dynamically add form elements based on user input.
An example is that when a user selects a "server" from a select box I
add (via AJAX calls back to server) a "type" select box pre-populated
with valid choices for that server. I do this by using observe_field on
the "server" field and update a div on the page with the new "type"

I''ve tried:

Can RoR''s AJAX helpers do this?
Hi,
I want to type text into an input field then on enter, use AJAX to
update the value of an input field elsewhere on the screen.
''observe_field'' allows me to watch a form field and dynamically update a
DIV. Is there a variation or other method to allow me to update a field
instead?

observe_field submit behavior
I am using observe_field on a number of multi-selects and checkbox form
elements whose values would normally come in as arrays on a normal
(non-Ajax) form post.
I understand that by using the :with => ''name'' I will get name=value in
the request.raw_post however if the field I am submitting has mutliple
values and the name is of the form ''name[]'', I get
