Tyan K8HM and lm_sensors
I have a Tyan Thunder K8HM (S3892) motherboard and I am trying to get
lm_sensors to work with it. The problem is that I am getting
conflicting information. The source for lm_sensors says not to
compile the modules for the 2.6 kernel. The information from Tyan
says that I need to compile the modules if my kernel is less than
2.6.12.
Has anyone here configured lm_sensors for this motherboard?

SuperMicro X7DBE with CentOS4?
I am planning to build a server based on the SuperMicro X7DBE+-O
motherboard. This server will have two dual-core Xeon processors and
a 3ware 9550SX raid card.
Has anyone built a server based on this motherboard? Are there any
issues with the smp/dual-core support in CentOS4 that might cause
problems?
I appreciate any input. I'm just looking to find out about any
possible problems before

Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892 lm_sensors Config
Tyan has posted a lm_sensors config file for the Thunder K8SE S2892 at
ftp://ftp.tyan.com/software/lms/lms_s2892.conf
However when I ran the sensors command on my S2892 I was getting a readout for an
adt7463 chip that wasn't referenced in the config file. I emailed Raphael Deng at
Tyan asking him to confirm the manual edit needed to get sensors.conf to refer to the
adt7463 chip. His

Onboard RAID Tyan Transport GT24 (Thunder K8SRE s2891)
I've been checking out this and like the looks of it.
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/gt24b2891.html
I was told the onboard SATA RAID controller can only
be used by windows. However, others have told me that
there is no problem using it with linux.
Anyone used the Tyan Transport GT24 (TYAN Thunder
K8SRE s2891 motherboard)? Good choice for a CentOS
server?
Thanks,

Problems installing 5.1 on a Tyan Thunder HEsl with a SCSI controller
Hi,
I'm trying to install 5.1 using the onboard LSI Symbios 53C1010, and I'm
running into some trouble. When the computer first boots, the SCSI BIOS
sees the three HDDs, but when I go to install, the installer hangs for a
while at inserting the sym53c8xx driver and if I go over to the screen
on F4 it shows that it is trying to scan the SCSI bus and is resetting
all of the IDs. Once that

Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892 Report
I had my eye on the Tyan dual-Opteron mobos for awhile. I tried to find
a posting *anywhere* sharing experiences with these boards under Linux.
No such luck. So placing myself under the heading "Where Angles Fear to
Tread," I went ahead and built a system anyway. Here's what I've learned.
The specs:

Server hangs initializing audio
I have a server that frequently hangs while rebooting. I see no
errors, but during the boot process it stops at this stage:
Initializing hardware... storage network audio
The cursor sits just after the word "audio" and I have to do a hard
reset to get out of it. This server has no audio capabilities, so I
am thinking that I just need to disable the audio stuff so it doesn't

Non-Executable Stack Patch
I was wondering if there's any non-executable stack patch for
FreeBSD's kernel.
I searched in google but all I got was some questions in
freebsd-security back from 2001 and an answer saying someone
heard about a project like this, but no information at all.
Is there any patch like PaX or Openwall available for FreeBSD?
I dont want to discuss if its useless or not since there're a

Write performance with 3ware 9550
I have two identical servers. The only difference is that the first
one has Maxtor 250G drives and the second one has Seagate 320G drives.
OS: CentOS-4.4 (fully patched)
CPU: dual Opteron 280
Memory: 16GB
Raid card: 3ware 9550Sx-8LP
Raid volume: 4-disk Raid 5 with NCQ and Write Cache enabled
On the first server I have decent performance. Nothing spectacular,
but good enough. The second one

xen usage monitoring (munin plugin)
Dear list,
as my Xen3 server is finaly becomming ready for production I was
wondering if anyone has written a xen usage monitoring/logging tool?
Something like xm top, but with continuose logging to a (rr)database.
Or a munin plugin?
I can''t remember seeing anything simmilar on the list.
BTW: where does xm top get the NETTX(k) and NETRX(k) from?
For a munin plugin I''d

Using compression on SSD
Hi!
I scanned for relevant topics in the last two years but except for putting
a swap file on compress=lzo this march I didnĀ“t found anything.
Does compression make sense on SSD? Or more specifically:
1) In what chunk sizes does BTRFS compress? How much data is affected when
a byte is changed in a 2 GB file or so? Can compression cause more writes
to the SSD in extreme circumstances?
2) It

port forwarding as root
Hi,
I'm little unhappy that OpenSSH server forwards connections while
running as root. Services what checks out using ident protocol complains
about me working as root [and for a good reason].
To change situation I see following ways:
1) for every port forwarding fork();setuid();forward|exec(netcat)
2) after authentication grab one pty;setuid();forward connections as
requested [is there

plot(<lm>): new behavior in R-2.2.0 alpha
As some of you R-devel readers may know, the plot() method for
"lm" objects is based in large parts on contributions by John
Maindonald, subsequently "massaged" by me and other R-core
members.
In the statistics litterature on applied regression, people have
had diverse oppinions on what (and how many!) plots should be
used for goodness-of-fit / residual diagnostics, and to my

data frames with non-unique row.names
In R and S, the general idea is that data.frames
must have unique row.names (aka dimnames(.)[[1]]).
Several observations / problems (in R *and* S !).
[Example code at the end]
1)
Both in S and R,
data.frame(..)
(and e.g., also cbind(<data.frame>, ..) which dispatches to data.frame())
silently drops the whole row.names and replaces it by "1" "2" ...

What about a higher level configuration language
Hi all.
I've been reading through Wi-Ki and at the extensions.conf file
description (http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk+config+extensions.conf)
The author says this:
"One day, someone is going to write a proper scripting language for
Asterisk that can understand a simpler, easier (and more traditional)
scripting syntax. All it would need to do is translate the "high
