Counter Problem
Hi. I have a problem with counters in Rails. The situation looks like
this:
-3 simple models
class Forum < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :posts
end
class Topic < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :posts
end
class Post < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :topic, :counter_cache => true
belongs_to :forum, :counter_cache => true
end
- In migrations i have declared

Tag Cloud Code
Does anyone have any sample code for a tag cloud.
I''ve looked at typo but they''ve just got complicated sql (which I don''t
have a clue about). All I want is to select tags and make them
bigger/smaller depending on the number of pages that are ''tagged'' by
them. Thanks in advance

How do you detect if ActiveRecord ''update'' fails?
So I''m updating multiple model objects in one go with something like
this in my controller:
=> Photo.update(params[:photo].keys, params[:photo].values)
When the update fails due to validation errors, how do I detect it?
The Rails API says:
"If the save fails under validations, the unsaved object is still
returned."
So I can''t simply do this:
=> if

Why does ActiveRecord allow perception of success when updating an ID, however it doesn't really work(i.e. no change in database)?
Hi,
Why does ActiveRecord allow perception of success when updating an ID,
however it doesn''t really work(i.e. no change in database)?
Here''s an example. The update of "id" versus update of a non-existent
attribute.
?> ai = AccountItem.find(:first) => #<AccountItem id: 1, account_id: 1,
date: "2009-01-11", amount:

ActiveRecord, << or push_with_attributes: update if exists?
In the Agile Rails book, on page 232 (PDF, 4th edition) there is an
example of (within ActiveRecord) marking an article as read by a user at
the present time. Short example code (from the book) here:
class User < ActiveRecord::Base
has_and_belongs_to_many :articles
def read_article(article)
articles.push_with_attributes(article, :read_at => Time.now)
end

Sequencing control with edit method in CRUD examples
I have been playing with the cookbook type of tutorials building a fish
tournament scoring piece and am having a bit of a problem with a DB
field called "points" in my "catch" table that is not input by the user
but is calulated based on a "size" field that is input by the user.
I have the following in my catch_controller.db

why is ActiveRecord tying to select nonex ID column?
I''ve loaded (and updated) thousands of these MeteredUsage records. In
the middle of a run, I suddenly get:
ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: Mysql::Error: Unknown column ''id'' in
''where clause'': UPDATE `metered_usages` SET `cost` = 12603.46 WHERE `id`
= NULL
I can''t see anything that''s different about this particular record

normalizing data sets
Hi,
Can someone tell me how to normalize a data set so that the mean of the set is 0 and the variance is 1. As I understand, when you
calculate the principle components of a data set through correlation as
< princomp( dataset, cor=T ) >
then a similar calculation is performed. I would like to know how I can perform such a calulation directly. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Filtering results through URL (e.g. new?forum_id=3)
Is there a special code you have to place in the routes so filtering
results through the URL works?
For example, Ruby Forum does it with:
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/new?forum_id=3
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/new?forum_id=5
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/new?forum_id=7
etc.
Any ideas?

Problem with ActiveRecord and Associations
Hi,
I''m having what I believe to be a typecast problem with ActiveRecord and
Associations. In the code below, I need to flag a contact record for
deletion if the contact doesn''t have any addresses or books records:
sql = "select id, delete_flag from contacts where id = #{params[:id]}"
contact = Contact.find_by_sql(sql)
if (contact[0].addresses.count +

Return only results that user is allowed to see?
Is it possible with acts_as_ferret to somehow restrict the results that
are returned?
For instance, I don''t want to return results that are logically deleted
with acts_as_paranoid (deleted_at IS NOT NULL and deleted_at < now()).
Also, if a user is not an Admin, they should not be able to return
results that have a certain value in a certain column, like forum_id !=

Problems with multiple ActiveRecords and Validations
Hi all,
I am a RoR newbie and have the following scenario set up:
There are 2 ActiveRecords involved, the first one being "User", the
second one being "Visibility".
The corresponding users table holds address informations regarding a
User. The visibilities table holds visibility settings for the
individual columns of the users table (i.e. firstname, lastname, country

ActiveRecord: When / where to validate data? Tricky question
First of all, thanks for you time. I have kind of a tricky question and
wanted to see what you guys thought.

Lets say I have this:

validates_numericality_of :some_number, :only_integer => true
end

I notice that ActiveRecord::Base.update_attributes() calls save().
What if I want to get an exception if the save fails? Is there a way to
get the update_attributes() function plus the save! function?
Thanks,

transactions with two models
Hi,
In Agile Web Development with Rails section on Transactions (p 381)
there are two main examples.
1) making changes in two records in the same database table
2) making changes in two records each in a different *database*
I want to do what is in between: changes in two records each in a
different table of the same database. Suppose they are apples and
oranges tables.
How do I write this?

Custom action on Active Record Validation Failure?
Instead of having it highlight the bad fields when you enter in a record
that fails validation, is there a way to make it do an action? I''m
looking for something like this:
validates_uniqueness_of :user_id,:url => {:controller => "headline",
:action => "index"}
so that on failing the uniqueness check, it would go to the headline
controller.

update only the join table in a HABTM - how?
I have a photographers app that requires giving access to galleries for
users. in one part, I want to be able to define gallery access for a
user seperate from updating any of the user info. I have this function:
def edit_access
@user = User.find(params[:id])
@user.galleries = Gallery.find(params[:gallery_ids]) if
params[:gallery_ids]
if @user.update_attributes(params[:user])
