Back again; errors in depot app
Sorry, but this is a big one - after adding the Ajax portion of the Agile
Web Development tutorial my page displays:
Application error
Change this error message for exceptions thrown outside of an action (like
in Dispatcher setups or broken Ruby code) in public/500.html
It started when I added -
page[:current_item].visual_effect :highlight,

Where is the send() function?
Hi,
in the tutorial "4 Days on Rails" the following code fragment is used:
,----
| <% for column in Category.content_columns %>
| <td><%=h category.send(column.name) %></td>
| <% end %>
`----
Apparently, the send() function returns the column value by name, but
where does this function comes from? Unfortunately, neither the tutorial
nor the API

ROaR: A Ruby on Rails Podcast
I''m starting a new podcast to cover some of the hot topics going on in
Rails. Half news, half interactive, all community. As always, the
first episode kinda sucks but I''m looking forward to feedback from all
of you on how to make it better.

How to get the current URL?
Hi,
how can I get the current URL withing a controller? There seems to be no
appropriate method in ActionController::Base.
I''m creating a site, which requires a login for some pages. I''m using
before_filter for authentication. My idea was to store the currect URL
in a session before redirecting to the login page and then redirect to
this URL after successful authenfication.

Strange error: undefined method `rewrite''
Hi,
when I generate a new rails project with a simple scaffolded controller,
I get a strange error message, whenever it tries to call the url_for
method, for example:
,----
| undefined method `rewrite'' for #<Url:0xb7675e64>
|
| Extracted source (around line #7):
|
| 4: </p>
| 5: <% end %>
| 6:
| 7: <%= link_to ''Edit'', :action =>

ActiveRecord: Getting table names
How do i get (discover) all the table names within a database using
ROR/ActiveRecord ?
I wish to build a webapp that connects to a database on the fly,
discovers tables and column names etc and then can show data or build a
report based on user selection. The ActiveRecord API doesnt seem to give
any method for getting table names.

Top margin on PDF generated with PDF::Writer
Hi,
A little question. I''ve written a method that uses PDF::Writer to
generate a PDF document with some images and text. This is the code on
my controller:
def pdf
gen_pdf
redirect_to("#{@request.relative_url_root}/pdf/cupones.pdf")
end
private
def gen_pdf
pdf = PDF::Writer.new(:paper => "A4")
pdf.margins_cm(0)
pdf.start_columns(2, 0)
pdf.select_font

Active Record Basics - Making it commentable
hi everyone, I hope someone can help me out with some active record
basics? I''ve been banging my head for the past 4 hours and I can''t seem
to get it to work.
I am trying to add comments to a caption (just like how one adds a
comment to a post in a blog). I seem to be able to read posts just fine
from the DB, however, I can''t use the "recordComment"

Passing a value from one rhtml to another
I''m trying to find a way to get from one rhtml page to another and
taking a value along to use in the second page. Basically a user clicks
on one of many download links and what should appear on the next page is
all the available stuff related to that download, so I think if I take
the id number of the first page then i can use if statements in the
second page? Sorry if that sounds

class does not inherit (?) ActionRecord::Base
Hi. I''m a newbie at this, so please bear with me.
I have several classes which model several corresponding tables. All of
them seem to work except one. I have not made many modifications from
the scaffold templates. However, with one class, Log, all methods give
me the following type of error
NoMethodError in LogController#create

Wierdness with rake test_units and schema.rb
I have just migrated to use Rail 1.1 from 1.0.
In the progress of fixing and cleaning up the unit tests. I found the
following problem. I am not sure if this is a bug or it is my
environment.
When I run "rake test_units, some of the index in association tables is
not created, this leads to failures for some unit test cases.
Thinking that may be because I didn''t setup the

more questions: human_name
One more question:
Is there some way to set the human_name of a column? e.g.: human_name
for column address1 shouldn''t be Address1 but "Address, line 1".
If not, should I make a hash with my custom names?
Best regards,

Easy way to handle form input without a model class?
I have a couple forms that I''d like to be able to validate and
automatically populate, but it shouldn''t be based on AR. In fact I
often have a bunch of small forms that I can''t really justify writing
a whole new model class for anyway. I''d like to validate the form
input, and then use rails helpers to automatically populate the form
if validations fail.

Active Record, Migration, and Translation
Hi,
I think the columns and table in migration should be able to have an
optional "display_name" set manually. Something like:
create_table :people, {display_name => "Personne"} do |t|
t.column :first_name :string, :display_name => "Prénom".
end
Let me explain my point of view:
Rails is a framework made to write programs in English. You see it when

Capistrano, OS X
If you installed your copy of ruby via DarwinPorts, the hashbang lines
at the top of your dispatch.* scripts says "#!/opt/local/bin/ruby". This
is a problem, if you''re deployin via Capistrano to a host with a
different path to ruby (which would be practially all of them:-)
Here''s a fix. Add this "fix_hashbangs.rb" script to your script
directory.
