BackgrounDRb version 1.0RC1 available now
Hi Folks, BackgrounDRb is a Ruby job server and scheduler. Its main intent is to be used with Ruby on Rails applications for offloading long-running tasks. Since a Rails application blocks while serving a request it is best to move long-running tasks off into a background process that is divorced from http request/response cycle. This new release of BackgrounDRb is also modular and can be used

Mocking Workers in Backgroundrb
Hi Has anyone mocked a call like the following for backgroundrb? MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :admin_email_worker, :args => params [:email]) I cannot seem to find the correct manner to do it. Would have liked to be able to do MiddleMan.should_receive (:new_worker).with(:class => :admin_email_worker, :args => {"body" => "my message"}) Cheers Shane

Couple questions about backgroundrb
So, what''s the status of this project? I''m a little confused. The documentation at http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org seems out of date. It refers to http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/tags/release-0.2.1, which doesn''t work. All I want is a way to easily set up tasks that should run periodically. Some stuff should run every 10 seconds, some stuff once a day, etc.

Noob needs help installing backgroundrb on Windows XP
Hey Guys, In the readme for Backgroundrb it says that windows support has been depcreated for this version, but then it goes on to mention how to use it in Windows. So I''m not sure if it should be running on windows or not, so I''ll ask anyway. Also, I''m new to ruby and I''m also new to server administration, so I apologize if my questions are pretty

BackgrounDRb 0.2.0 Release! Complete rewrite.
Hello Folks- I am really happy to announce the release of BackgrounDRb 0.2.0 . This is a complete rewrite and re-architecture of this codebase. I want to thank skaar for all of his hard work. I put out a call for help with the new architecture and skaar stepped up bigtime. I had already written the new scheduler and cron compatible syntax and moved to multi process architecture. But he

BackgrounDRb release 1.0 available now
Hi Folks, I am glad to announce 1.0 release of BackgrounDRb. This would be a major release since 0.2 release of BackgrounDRb. Here is a brief summary of changes: - BackgrounDRb is DRb no longer. It makes use of EventDriven network programming library packet ( http://packet.googlecode.com ). - Since we moved to packet, many nasty thread issues, result hash corruption issues are totally

backgrounDRb problems with results and MiddleMan
Hi there, I''ve been experimenting with implementing BackgroundDRb in my rails app but am running into some problems. The primary problem I''m getting is in cleaning up worker threads, or getting any kind of response out of worker threads. If try using the response function/hash in my Worker the worker will not execute reporting that response is an unknown variable or function.

Backgroundrb 1.0.1: uninitialized constant Packet::ClassHelpers (NameError)
Hi, just updated backgroundrb to release 1.0.1 and am getting this error when trying to start backgroundrb. vendor/plugins/backgroundrb/framework/core.rb:18: uninitialized constant Packet::ClassHelpers (NameError) Just updated from r298 where everything was working fine. If I comment out the offending line then backgroundrb starts but I can''t connect to it from my app. Anyone have any

Recommendations for eternally-running backgroundrb workers?
I''ve got some workers that I want to have running all the time. Right now I''m just launching them manually, by requesting a special page in my rails app that includes lines like: MiddleMan.new_worker(:class=> :receiver, :job_key=>:r, :args=>{:sleep_time=>10}) This strikes me as a really weak way to fire up my workers. I basically want to automate things so

BackgrounDRb::PacketLogger issue
Hi there I have recently upgraded to v1.0.1 and I''ve noticed an issue which I don''t believe was present in the 0.2 release. In my worker class I am logging errors as follows: logger.error "the error message" However, this now causes an exception to be thrown in the new version: undefined method `error'' for

[PATCH] x 2 - Fix for "null pointer exception" when ask_status is called before worker is run, and docfixes
Sorry for attaching patches in emails to the mailing list, but I''m still unable to login to Devjavu for Backgroundrb (I''m able to login just fine for Merb''s Devjavu and submitted a ticket successfully). Anyway, I encountered a bug when trying to #ask_status of a worker before it''s run (or rather, before its result_hash has been set to something). Not sure why

Subversion authentication?
Hello, I''ve been trying to get the latest copy of BackgrounDRB as per the documentation here http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org/. However, whenever I try to access http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/tags/release-0.2.1 I keep an authentication prompt and if I leave it blank I am declined access. Is there somewhere else to get the code or am I doing something wrong? Thanks, -carl --

one more "uninitialized constant" problem
Hi everyone, I''m new to backgroundrb, and I''m trying to get started with a simple example, yet with no success. This is the code that I have in RAILS_ROOT/lib/workers/testing_worker.rb class TestingWorker < BackgrounDRb::Worker::RailsBase def do_work(args) # This method is called in it''s own new thread when you # call new worker. args is set

BackgrounDRb 0.2.1 Release
It''s that time again friends. skaar has been at it again and has greatly improved the stability of the new system. And Ara Howard has helped a ton by working with us on the slave library to iron out the wrinkles./ The results is a lot nicer backgroundrb for everyone. I have to say another huge thanks to skaar. He has singlehandedly wrote almost all of this new version and many

pre-release version of backgroundrb available now from svn
Hi, A pre-release version of backgroundrb is available now from svn. Download it from here: http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/branches/version099/ Since this release marks significant migration from existing practices, i intend to keep trunk untouched for a while. There are no install scripts, but you should copy "backgroundrb" file from script directory of plugin to script

New Backgroundrb Speed Issues?
The new backgroundrb seemed to me to be markedly slower than the old one. So, I ran a "side-by-side" comparison test using a worker that I had written which parses a CSV file and loads the results into a database. The results? The latest version appears to take twice as long to run the same code as the previous version. Has anyone else experienced speed issues with the new

backgroundrb 0.2.1 not supported on windows platform?
Hi all, I want to execute certain ruby script periodically in my rails application running on windows platform. I wanted to try out backgroundrb, but it seems that the support for Windows is deprecated with release 0.2.0 of BackgrounDRb. The latest release is 0.2.1 & the plugin still doesnt support windows platform. Can anyone throw more light on this? Also, can anyone suggest any

backgroundrb preview
Hi Ezra/skaar, Wow man, the exercise was worth it. The connection closed problem with socket as i mentioned in my earlier mails...completely disappeared, and now i can connect only once to the socket and keep reading..till end of its days. Literally impossible with older release of backgroundrb. This could also potentially solve the issues people were having with ActiveRecord. As i said
