What is class TestController < ActionController::Base
What are the different parts of; class TestController <
ActionController::Base?
I look at the http://api.rubyonrails.org/ and try to understand but I
don''t. Could someone give me a hint?
I get the part of Test being the "folder", def and all that, but I can''t
find an explanation of the basic stuff.

Rails on Mongrel
Hi,
After following advice from you good folks, I gave mongrel a try in a
cluster design based on the example on the Mongrel website - and it
worked right out of the box which is great - and it''s very fast :)
I have got a bit stuck though. I have two MS Word files in
/public/files/. I can pull back these files no problem but it isn''t
sending a mimetype.
I think I have two

A good tutorial
Are there any other tutorial than "Agile Web Development with Rails"
that you can suggest? So far I can''t say that RoR has been easy to
learn. :-)

How dows RoR work?
This is so frustrating. Is RoR that easy to learn or is it hype or is it
just me? I wonder how many newbies like me are surfing the docs trying
to get a clue of the basics. Every tutorial I find is much the same, and
seems to skip the fundmental parts. How should you understand the Ruby
API http://api.rubyonrails.org/?

One Lighttpd or many?
I''m trying to get Lighttpd started, and understand how it works (not
quite there yet with Ror). Some questions:
1) Can I run Lighttpd as a main server instead of Apache2?
2) When hosting different RoR projetcs, will there be one server for
each? Or is it one server running all?
2) Can it do everything Apache can? Like PHP, webdav, etc?

Recommendations for Apache 2 with mod_fcgid
Hi,
Have been pulling out my hair for the last few days wondering what I''m
going to deploy my site onto.
I currently have FreeBSD 4.7, Apache 1.3.3, PHP 4 and MySQL 4 running a
year-old PHP site. Dated stuff I know!
The new version of the site will be entirely Ruby on Rails, and I am
wondering what order I should be doing things in terms of upgrades and
installation. I want to be

domain vs. app name relationship?
Could someone please explain the relationship, if any, between the RoR application directory / name (generated by ''rails appname'') and the internet domain name it will be hosted under? If my web site is www.mydomain.com, does my RoR appname need to be ''mydomain''?
Thanks,
Bill

lighttpd proxy w/ apache2
I''ve tried a bunch of things trying to get ruby/apache2 and php working
together. I looked over my earlier post and followed the instructions
on ezra''s website to install lighttpd on debian. I''ve gotten really far
but I think there is one bit missing:
1. I got apache2 and php working together
2. I got lighttpd working on port 3000 and my rails app launches ok

Email Address verifier--eyes needed...
Folks:
I''ve posted a really basic e-mail address verifier to
http://wiki.rubygarden.org/Ruby/page/show/VerifyEmailAddress
I''d appreciate folks who understand DNS and SMTP having a look at it
to see if it looks reasonable. You could comment here or, possibly
more usefully, comment on the wiki page itself.
Thanks

Starting on the Ruby Rails path
Hi all, I''m a web designer/-developer. I found Ruby and Ruby on Rails,
and as I can understand (for now) this is what I''ve been looking for.
I''m really exited about this. Prior to this I''ve used Lasso and PHP.
But a few questions (sitting on Mac OS 10.4.6). I tried to install

Migration newbie
In an migration file there is one up and one down method. Below is from
Agile Web Development with Rails:
class CreateOrderHistories < ActiveRecord::Migration
def self.up
create_table :order_histories do |t|
t.column :order_id, :integer, :null => false
t.column :created_at, :timestamp
t.column :notes, :text
end
end
def self.down
drop_table :order_histories
end
end
Why is there a drop

Mongrel Now Recommended Setup?
I see that the RubyOnRails.com site has migrated to Mongrel with Apache as a
front-end proxy.
Is that now the/a recommended setup for Rails apps? We''re still using FCGI
but I''m always interested to learn more about other folk''s successful
deployment choices.
Across all of our sites we''re pumping out about 300k pages per day so

thought I would find the var @content_for_layout in the controller, but
I didn''t. Where is layouts defined or controlled?

Or maybe I crash it and don''t know why. Here is the setup:
I have an action that will crash my debian sarge development box
using fcgid, fastcgi and scgi running with Apache2, as well as
fastcgi running with lighttpd, every time. Here is the action from
the controller:

Random 502 Bad Gateway
I have moved my project to a dedicated server and I am getting a very
annoying behaviour.
I am able to view the site just fine when using the ip.
The name is properly resolved on my computer, however I am getting
"Bad Gateway The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream
server."
This is simply random. The site works for several minutes, then i get this
message for some

apache2 on red hat linux need help anyone
I''ve poured over many docs online and thought it would be wonderful to
get RoR running in 15 minutes. Well after 15 hours, I''m completely
stuck and ready to give up on RoR. I''m hoping somebody can give me
some guidance. I''ve pulled out my hair and am bald like others who
have tried to get RoR running without any luck.

Just about to set up RoR on our server and was wondering what the
ideal setup for RoR is these days? Apache 1? Apache 2? fCgi?
Any guidance would be helpful!

Check version of RubyGems, FastCGI, PCRE / uninstall
I followed hivelogic article on how to install Ror and Lighttpd on Mac
OS.
http://hivelogic.com/articles/2005/12/01/ruby_rails_lighttpd_mysql_tiger
But I''m not sure I got Lighttpd in the right place.
If I do "which lighttpd" and "lighttpd -v" I get answers from the
terminal:
/usr/local/sbin/lighttpd
lighttpd-1.4.11 - a light and fast webserver
But I
