Errata in the "Four Days with Rails"
Hi, I spent more than 4 days getting done with the "Four Days with Rails" tutorial, mostly because I ran into a few issues that seemed to stop me in my tracks. But, after looking around, I was able to find the problems and solve them (in whatever way I thought best) :-) I''m posting the whole list of problems that I ran into with "Four Days with Rails" to the list so

Four Days on Rails
I''ve been reading the tutorial and I have problems with the TinyInt(1) for the attribute "item.done". I thought this thread would be the best to post it. I''m using Rails 1.1.14. When in the partial template _list_stripes appears: <%= list_stripes["done"] == 1 ? show_image("done_ico.gif") : " " %> it always returns the

Tutorial for Queries
Hi! I''m looking for a good tutorial that explains the main points of performing queries with Rails. I do have AWDWR and have read the section on ''find'' but I''m looking for something that goes into more detail on how to perform queries across tables. Abstracted from my current application, this is an example: * person has_many sites * site has_one room *

Next/ Previous record
Hi, Quick question (which means that I think there should be an easy answer)... When I am in the "show" view, I''d like to add 2 links, one for previous and one for next record so that the user can go on to the next "result" without having to go back to the ''list'' of results. However, I can''t find my way about this problem :-S

ActiveRBAC?
How''s the experience with using ActiveRBAC? For my "next 4 days with rails" :P I''d like to consider adding Role-based access to the To-Do List application in the original "four days w/ rails" tutorial. Just wondering if ActiveRBAC would be a good place to start? Thanks! For those who are wondering: https://activerbac.turingstudio.com/trac Cheers Mohit.

Problem with Pagination
Hi Guys, I am trying to paginate the results from a search. When I use actual constants in the search conditions, it works fine: def query @k2_result_pages, @k2_results = paginate (:k2_results, :conditions => [''e_date >= ? AND e_date <= ?'', ''2006-07-12'', ''2006-08-12''],

Ruby/ RoR for Windows app + Web
Again, I find that I''m stumped trying to concisely attach a subject to my query... Sorry about that :-S Also, I apologize if the query is a bit off-topic, but I hope that it is relevant! Anyway, the recent thread about the "Ruby CronJob" got me thinking. We have an application that requires to read data from a device connected to the serial port of a Windows machine. The

Converting mysql to postgres
Hi, Anyone got any cool tricks for converting a Rails site (in this case, a typo installation) from a mysql database to a postgresql database? I''ve got it almost working -- I''m doing a SQL dump from mysql and loading it into postgres. However, mysql does booleans as a tinyint with 0 = false and 1 = true. When I try to import that into a postgres database that expects booleans

Syntax Problem
In an *.rhtml, why do I need to add <% for product in @products %> in order that I may call an <img class="list-image" src="<%= product.img_url %>"/>. Is there not another way to skip the "for product" line? I really dont want to include it. I tried @products = product but it does not work. Can anyone help shed light on this matter? -- Posted via

Building a Search Page as part of CRUD
I''ve been experimenting with Rails over the past couple of days and have come across something that seems harder than it should be. In previous frameworks I have used (WebObjects, php) a full search page (which leads into a list view populated with search results) was part of the CRUD that was either dynamically or statically created after specifying table/object schema. DRYing - similar named fields, etc.
I''m sorry - just couldn''t come up with a subject that describes the problem :( Anyway, this is my problem. I have a long list of fields that need to be displayed when a ''show'' is requested on the controller. I''m now doing the list.rhtml and looking for a DRY way to do the following. For each data item, I have 2 fields - one is the item name, the

Reading floating points into a field stored as Integers
Hi, I''m trying to follow the "AWDR" example of storing certain types of numbers (in my case, percentages not money) as integers in the database. I understand from the Depot application how to format the output to have 2 places (or n places for that matter) decimal. Now, I"m wondering about the input. It''s more natural for people to enter numbers as

Render nothing; go nowhere
I am building an application that requires a C++ program to access the Rails web application using POST. Now, I just added user authentication to the mix and it has made things more interesting. I''m using basic authentication as shown in the AWDWR and Rails Recipes books. I can now get my C++ program to submit the user credentials to the login/login page. All I want the login page

Login Password text field values
I have a text field that I use for logging in users. Due to the design of my site, I don''t have room to put the word "username" in front of the text field so I''d like to actually display it inside the field and then have the word clear when the user clicks on it. How could I modify something like this <%= text_field "user", "login", :size

Understanding Common Views
Hi Everyone, I''m trying to formulate my thoughts on how views work in RoR and I understand the basic bits - 1. Every controller has its own view defined using rhtml files in the views/[controller_name] folder. 2. There is one "view" file (rhtml) for every in the controller and has the same name as the method. 3. For portions that are common, partials can be used - file

[Slightly OT] POSTing data to a Rails App
Hi, I have a Windows program that collects data and would like to store this data in a database that is usually accessed through Rails. It was recommended that I try to "POST" the data to the Rails application. I''m running into some problems trying to format my POST string for the application. I''m trying to learn by interfacing to the TODO application (Four Days
