Neophyte needs help!
Hi All,
Real neophyte here, to both backgroundrb and ruby/rails in general.
(Hey, we''ve all got to start somewhere, right!) :)
I''ve just been playing around with the example code at
http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org/ , and trying to get all
the pieces to work (btw, I''m using version 0.2.1).
I did a ''generate worker example'', which created an

Backgroundrb keeps spawning processes
Hi!
I''ve just a created a really simple rails scheduled worker for
backgroundrb to start playing with :
class SessionCleanerWorker < BackgrounDRb::Worker::RailsBase
def do_work(args)
logger.info "SessionCleaner> started"
CGI::Session::ActiveRecordStore::Session.destroy_all( [''updated_at
<?'', 120.minutes.ago] )

struggling with stability
Greetings all,
Unit tests are passing, but I''m having mucho problems getting brb to
run without exceptions for more than 6 hours.
I''m seeing a mixture of the following 2 exceptions:

Trouble on Multi Server setup
Hello all,
I''m having some trouble getting backgroundrb set up so that all the
processing happens on a single machine. I have 3 load balanced
machines. Right now, all three run our web application and create
MiddleMan workers to generate a large PDF report.
However, because of the processing power needed to generate the PDFs,
I want to change our setup so that two servers run

MiddleMan behavior
i found some questions and answers on mailing lists but there is still a
problem - when i want to create new worker from within a worker -
::BackgrounDRb::MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :second_worker, :args =>
{:id=>2, :text=>"slave"}) works
but when i want to get reference to that object:
::BackgrounDRb::MiddleMan.worker(@second)
yields:
NoMethodError: undefined

Passing object into results - "can''t convert DRb::DRbUnknown into Hash - (TypeError)"
Hi,
I''m using backgroundrb to get RSS feeds and pass them back to the
controller. I''m using the Ruby RSS library to parse the feed, which returns
an RSS object. After that I pass the object into the results hash, but
that''s when this error occurs. Basically, this is what I have:
rss = RSS::Parser.parse(response.body)
results[:feed] = rss # error!

BackgrounDRb 0.2.1 Release
It''s that time again friends. skaar has been at it again and has
greatly improved the stability of the new system. And Ara Howard has
helped a ton by working with us on the slave library to iron out the
wrinkles./ The results is a lot nicer backgroundrb for everyone.
I have to say another huge thanks to skaar. He has singlehandedly
wrote almost all of this new version and many

schedule support on latest svn, a question
I''m running the latest backgroundrb mainly for scheduled tasks support.
As per the documentation I created the backgroundrb_schedules.yml with
the following:

:worker_method: :do_work
:job: :bleh
:trigger_args:
:start: <%= Time.now + 5.seconds %>

Hello,
Trying to get the example to work in standalone mode. I have the following
in a file and am not certain why I get this undefined method error:

(no subject)
Greetings,
I am seeing the following in my log quite a bit 20 + times per day.
The stack-trace seems tin indicate an internal issue - is concurrency
related?
== 0.2.1 (Released November 28, 2006 - r162)
My workers continue to function; on the next iteration I believe.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
cheers,
Jodi

looking for a worker that''s gone
In my app, I store the job key when a worker is fired off and then
check back in periodically to see how its doing. The workers delete
themselves when they''re done. I would expect when I try to get a
worker that has been deleted, I would get nil or a proper exception,
but instead I get:
>> MiddleMan.worker(''foobar'')
NoMethodError: undefined method

backgroundrb not cleaning up tmp files?
I just had an interesting issue on a production system that has been
running nicely for about a year. There were approximately 10,000
backgroundrb temp files in the /tmp directory. It looks like
backgroundrb wasn''t cleaning them up.
I noticed it with the following error:
DRb::DRbConnError: drbunix:///tmp/backgroundrb.20015/

Backgroundrb with Load Balancing Rails engines
Hi there,
We run several (3-4) Rails servers behind the reverse proxy / load
balancing web server serving the single application. All Rails
instances share the same database and use the database as a session
storage. Memcached is also part of the picture.
I''m looking into using Backgroundrb for some large uploads / parsing
task that provide progress status updates (via ajax calls).

Exception when doing DRb remote calls from a BackgrounDRb worker

I am trying to make DRb calls to a external server from a backgrounDRb

New worker not being created
I figured out that in the backgroundrb.yml, I had the old setting of making
the database RAILS_ENV. It wasn''t a valid variable in backgroundrb 0.2.1,
and it wasn''t reporting an error, so I had no idea. Once I changed it to
''development'' or ''production'', it started working.
I found that if a worker has an error, it usually logs the error

worker starting twice
Hi gang,
Thanks to other help I''ve gotten on this list, I''ve got backgroundrb
up and running using postgres alongside my rails app. I''ve designed
the system to have several eternally-running workers that periodically
poll the database to see if there''s any work for them to do, and set
things up in the config file to make them restart quickly if any of
them
