From OCFS to tape via tar (and back again)
We're using RMAN to back up our 9.2 RAC database to an OCFS v1 volume.
We have an existing shell script that we use for copying files from disk
to tape via tar, one file at a time. (Don't ask why. It's a legacy
script. Long story.) We're tweaking this script to use --o_direct when
tarring the file to tape and that seems to be working fine:
# tape device is /dev/nst0
$ tar

[root at Server ~]# dump -0vuf /dev/nst0 /boot

Help with dump/restore
So I recently installed an Overland Arcvault 12 tape library on a server
to back up /var/log/ and /home. The server is an out-of-box RHEL 5
install, with all packages selected, in an isolated lan, with no package
updates. Also, this is a live server that cannot be brought down for
backups, and some files may be actively in use during the dump - just
gotta live with it.
Since I know EL5 and

random crashes
I have a server thats been running fine for a year or two lock up a few
times recently, requiring power cycling.
The /var/log/messages after a lockup last night is appended to this message.
hardware is a pretty typical server, Supermicro X8DTE-F motherboard,
dual Xeon X5650, 48GB ECC memory, LSI SAS 2008 for the boot disks, and
LSI MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i for the data volume. Lots of 3TB

weird network error
a previously rock solid reliable server of mine crashed last night, the
server was still running but eth0, a Intel 82574L using the e1000e
driver, went down. The server has a Supermicro X8DTE-F (dual Xeon
X5650, yada yada). server is a drbd master, so that was the first
thing to notice network issues. Just a couple days ago I ran yum
update to the latest, I do this about once a month.

sg device
What is the "sg" device?
The reason I ask, is that I have a file server running CentOS 4.2 on
a Dell Precision 1650. Disks are attached via QLogic FC. I backup to
a Qualstar TLS-4222 tape changer, with AIT-2 tapes, which is
connected over an Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 SCSI. The software I'm
using is Legato Networker version 7.1.2. I'm backing up a bit under 1
TB a month

Dump levels?
I created a cron job to invoke a dump script according to Tower Of Hanoi.
I am dumping a subdirectory and a filesystem.
The backup script, with some other lines removed:
/path/to/dump -0 -fv /dev/nst0 /var/log
/path/to-dump -3 -fv /dev/nst0 /home
When viewing the dump logs, it looks like it is taking the whole job as
a level 0. Am missing something?
Thanks.

Xen driver domain...character device?
Greetings,
Does anyone know if it is possible to give a guest domain access to character
device hardware such as a SCSI tape drive (/dev/st0 | /dev/nst0)? I have
recompiled the guest xenU kernel with hardware access and declared the pci SCSI
card in the config file directive as follows:
pci = [ ''4,3,0'' ]
The log file when started reports:

Tape Drive and Bacula issue
I posted this in the Bacula list without success so I hope I might have some luck here. Btape and mt can access my DDS-3 Seagate Archive Python 06480-xxx tape drive but Bacula tray-mon ends up finally stating that it cannot open device /dev/nst0? That is the device string that I use to access the drive, oddly enough it also suggest the SD could not open the one file based storage location I have

[HW/OT] Recommend vendor to recover data from LTO4 tapes
Posting here in the hope that some one may have encountered problems
with recovery from backups on LTO4 media and found a solution.
Back ups on FujiFilm LTO4 media (800/1600).
Archives created using tar -cf /dev/nst0. ?The tapes were fine when
the archives were created (tested by extracting random sample files
from them) but something went wrong in storage (no physical damage).
Now a few LTO4

Hello all.
I'm struggling to get Centos 4 to recognize my Dell Powervaul 132T tape

ServingOutTapeDrive?
How does one serve out a tape drive attached to a Unix server similar to
serving out a printer attached to the server? Tape drive is a TRAVAN-5
20/10GB at /dev/nst0 (nonrewinding scsi) and responds to "mt" commands
appropriately.
thanks

Questions regarding hostdev scsi
Hi!
I'm oVirt developer responsible for most of 'hostdev' support. While
working on SCSI passthrough (that is hostdev type='scsi'), I've
encountered few issues I'm not sure how to solve somewhat effectively
and nicely.
Just a note - oVirt by default disables 'dynamic_ownership', meaning
we have to handle endpoint ownership/labeling ourselves. This

udev rules for /dev/sd[a-z] ?
I have a third party application that I want to run a CentOS4 box that
is expecting to access the generic SCSI devices through /dev/sga,
/dev/sgb, etc. However, the devices set up by udev are /dev/sg0,
/dev/sg1 etc.
Does anyone know what syntax I could use to create a udev rule that
creates symlinks sga -> sg0 etc. for each sg[0-N] device?
Thanks

i have a problem to configure shorewall to enable scanning over the
network with sane.
The scanner is located at the firewall hosts local interface.
Why do i get a "all2all" message and not "loc2loc"
