Deploying to production with backgroundrb (capistrano)
I have noticed that occasionally (about 50% of the time) when i
deploy (using capistrano) my app to a production server, i have to
ssh into the box and manually
stop and start backgroundrb to get it to load my workers.
this is my basic setup
i have 2 workers:
lib/workers/mp3_worker.rb => takes a hash of params to downsample an
mp3
lib/workers/flv_worker.rb => takes a has of

backgroundrb scheduler
I''ve been having a terrible time with the backgroundrb scheduler. The
issues I''m having is that the scheduled actions aren''t ran at all and if
they do, the process stays around forever. I''m using the backgroundrb as a
nightly cron to run some accounting operations.
questions:
1. How can I have the process destroyed after the worker completes?
2. Any idea on

logging problem in production
Greetings all;
I''ve just moved my app into production and BackgrounDRb is writing to development.log. The backgroundrb.yml file specifies production, as does environment.rb.
A little background (no pun intended ;-0 ) I''m using the ''old'' version of backgroundrb for session management. In the app, whenever a visitor changes pages I record the time in a db

nil object / slave server problem
I''m just getting started wtih backgroundrb, and unfortunately hit a
snag right away... I''m running the latest releases of rails,
backgroundrb, slave and daemons.
I created a simple worker class, using the generator, which currently
does nothing but print the arguments that are passed to do_work. I''m
running backgroundrb using ''./script/backgroundrb

Noob needs help installing backgroundrb on Windows XP
Hey Guys,
In the readme for Backgroundrb it says that windows support has been
depcreated for this version, but then it goes on to mention how to use
it in Windows. So I''m not sure if it should be running on windows or
not, so I''ll ask anyway. Also, I''m new to ruby and I''m also new to
server administration, so I apologize if my questions are pretty

postgres barfage revisted
First of all, I''d like to do what I''ve seen several others here do:
thank Ezra and any other contributors for producing a really great
plugin. Even though I''m having some minor problems, this is all so
approachable and easy to work with and dig into... I hate to think of
the hoops you''d need to jump through (both as creator of such a system
and as a user) to

Thread Pool Size?
Hi All,
It might be lack of sleep, but I am struggling to accurately limit our pool
size. It seems like I can specify it on the server with the -s command
line option and also on the client via the YAML pool_size. Is that right?
Which one wins?
Our problem is that we are getting about 40 threads on each backgroundrb box
and it''s flooring our db and each bgrb box.
We want around 8.

Capistrano Hanging on Deployment

example code for file upload
I have an archiving application that handles large file uploads. I
already use backgroundrb to run a behind the scenes bulk import of
records. All good. Thank you Ezra.
Now I would like to add long running file uploads to the things that
backgroundrb does for me. That''s right that ole chestnut. I''ve seen
a lot of mention of this practice around the web, but have yet

Stopping DRb after using BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init
Hi,
I''m having a problem where connections started through
BackgrounDRb::MiddleManDRbObject.init are not stopped, resulting in an
ever growing established connections between my Mongrels and remote
backgroundrbs
I added DRb.stop_service to my code executed after requests that init
MiddleManDRbObjects but that does not help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

I''m getting the following error (when doing script/backgroundrb start)

Scheduled workers only run once unless you call self.delete inside the worker
I had a worker scheduled to run every minute with
backgroundrb_schedules.yml:
ebay_runner:
:class: :ebay_auction_worker
:job_key: :ebay_auction_runner
:trigger_type: :cron_trigger
:trigger_args: 0 * * * * * *
This worker posts an auction to eBay from a queue of auctions every minute.
I was having a problem where the worker would run ok the first time, but
never any subsequent minutes

Backgroundrb-devel Digest, Vol 9, Issue 1
Hi Bill,
I have "version 1" backgroundrb running on my development server with
rails 1.2.1, with no issues (other than the left over DB connections
blocking up my MySQL server, which isn''t exactly a new problem).
Going to move production servers to rails 1.2.1 very soon, I''ll post
back if there''s any trouble.
Still would *really* like to get version

Backgroundrb with Load Balancing Rails engines
Hi there,
We run several (3-4) Rails servers behind the reverse proxy / load
balancing web server serving the single application. All Rails
instances share the same database and use the database as a session
storage. Memcached is also part of the picture.
I''m looking into using Backgroundrb for some large uploads / parsing
task that provide progress status updates (via ajax calls).

BackgrounDRb release 1.0 available now
Hi Folks,
I am glad to announce 1.0 release of BackgrounDRb.
This would be a major release since 0.2 release of BackgrounDRb.
Here is a brief summary of changes:
- BackgrounDRb is DRb no longer. It makes use of EventDriven network
programming library packet ( http://packet.googlecode.com ).
- Since we moved to packet, many nasty thread issues, result hash
corruption issues are totally

Two Rails Apps, One Backgroundrb Server?
This might be a really simple question, with a simple solution. I
have two rails apps running on the same box. Right now I am starting
two Backgroundrb servers (11006 and 11007). Wondering if it might be
possible to run only one and have the second app point to the first
app''s server?
TIA,
Kit

Connection to backgroundrb is lost when exiting action method
Hey.
I have a very annoying problem, and was wondering what is wrong.
Suppose I have backgroundrb running, and then I have an action in some
controller. In the action I define a worker. When leaving the action,
suddenly the connection to backgroundrb is lost:
DRb URI: druby://localhost:22222
Pid: 3976
Autostart...
done
druby://localhost:42531 - #<Errno::EBADF: Bad file descriptor -

Hi everyone,
I''ve a class that try to spawn two workers, every 5 seconds.
The code is something like:

MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :researches_worker,:job_key
=> :researches)
MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :products_worker,:job_key => :products)
sleep(5)
end
I''m using ":job_key", so if a worker hasn''t already ended its work

backgrounDRb problems with results and MiddleMan
Hi there,
I''ve been experimenting with implementing BackgroundDRb in my rails app but
am running into some problems.
The primary problem I''m getting is in cleaning up worker threads, or getting
any kind of response out of worker threads.
If try using the response function/hash in my Worker the worker will not
execute reporting that response is an unknown variable or function.
