fstype=auto breaks updatedb
It turns out that if you specify filesystem type `auto' in /etc/fstab, updatedb (the thing which updates your `locate' database) ceases to work. Here's the contents of my /etc/updatedb.conf: PRUNEFS="devpts NFS nfs afs proc smbfs autofs auto iso9660" PRUNEPATHS="/tmp /usr/tmp /var/tmp /afs /net" export PRUNEFS export PRUNEPATHS deleting the `auto' entry

overwrite any file with updatedb
[Mod: Headers modified -- alex] If this is already known, my apologies. It seemed very strange that this worked, so I thought it would be mentionable. On many linux systems(Redhat imparticularly) updatedb is run nightly around 1:00. When it sorts the files that find gets, it creats a few files in /tmp called sort0<pid>000{1,2,etc}. Each is around 512k. The first file is created and filled,

mlocate-updatedb.timer not working?
I set this computer up with Centos 8 a few days ago. "systemctl status mlocate-updatedb.timer" says "Active (waiting)". But the mlocate database hasn't been updated since the last time I ran updatedb manually. # ls -l /var/lib/mlocate/* -rw-r-----. 1 root slocate 22944208 Feb 29 10:30 /var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db What have I missed? -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D

mlocate/updatedb and btrfs subvolume mounts
I've just noticed that I'm having issues with finding files using "locate" when those files are on btrfs subvolume mounts. The issue is that updatedb cannot discern the difference between a btrfs bind mount and btrfs subvolume [1]. This generally means that if you're using btrfs subvolume mounts and updatedb at the same time, and you want to index those subvolumes,

Just to follow this up, the mlocate database update started working automatically

killing "uninterruptible sleep" process
Hi I logged in to one of my servers today and noticed that the load average is very high. After investigating the problem I found two processes in "D" stat ("uninterruptible sleep"): root 24344 0.0 0.2 1532 584 ? DN Jul21 0:01 /usr/bin/updatedb -f NFS,SMBFS,NCPFS,PROC,DEVPTS -e /tmp,/var/tmp,/usr/tmp,/afs,/net root 25899 0.0 0.2 1532 584 ? DN

rsync 2.5.6 hanging
I am using rsync 2.5.6 on redhat linux 6.1 with 1gb ram. What I would like to do is mirror a directory on the server to another server for backup purposes. The server is an ftp server and the main directory in question is 77GB consisting of 391000 subdirectories and files. when I run rsync with the following command: /usr/bin/rsync -av --rsh=ssh --stats --progress --rsync-path=/usr/bin/rsync

ext3 with quota under heavy load.
Hello list, I have a problem with an NFS server for my network. It has ran kernels 2.4.18-ac4 - 2.4.21-ac1, all with problems. The -ac patches are used to provide the new style quota support. The system seems to have gotten even less stable with the new kernel versions. This morning around 5 am, I got a page the system was unresponding to NFS requests. I ssh'd in, and found the loadavg

Gluster text file configuration information?
Where can I find documentation about manual configuration of Gluster peers/volumes? All documentation seems to be about the gluster CLI. I would prefer manual configuration to facilitate automation via scripts (e.g. Puppet/Chef). I also read in this list that it is possible to configure Raid10 via text files... I would also like to experiment with this setup. Any related documents on how to do

Using TSM to back-up glusterfs

Hi all, This is my first message to the list. I've been experimenting with running dovecot on my unRAID server (basically, a parity-protected array of disks, running on a slackware 13.1 platform). Someone on the unRAID forum had built a binary distribution of dovecot 1.1.20 and I got this up and running without too much trouble. Today, I've been building the latest dovecot release

get /full/path/filename.ext from filename.ext
I don't know if this is of interest as an alternative. I did find a cool functionality called locate and updatedb Updatedb creates the database of your files, locate does superfast searches. It essentially does a superfast "find" on your root filesystem, giving you the fully qualified path of all hits. You can create db's on your other filessytems. The problem is that it can

special tricks for developers box on centos 5
I was just wondering if there are special tricks people do that compile A LOT on centos? Do RAM disks help or something else I dont about that minimizes your compile time? I presently have and AMD x2 4800+ with 2GIG ram. Just curious if I can reduce any more time out of my compiles. Jerry

smb client support in midnight commander
I have implemented smb client functionality in midnight commander file manager. It is implemented in its virtual filesystem layer, just like the ftpfs and others. It mostly uses the functionality provided by the libsmb/clientgen.c in samba. The functionality of browsing for servers, showing shares on server as directories, and all read/write/erase/mkdir/rmdir/etc.. is all implemented. The

rdma or tcp?
Is there a document with some guidelines for setting up bricks with tcp or rdma transport? I'm looking at a new deployment where the storage cluster hosts connect via 10GigE, but clients are on 1GigE. Over time, there will be 10GigE clients, but the majority will remain on 1GigE. In this setup, should the storage bricks use tcp or rdma? If tcp is the better choice, and at some point in the

Updating a Data Frame
Hi, I have a global data-frame in my R script. At some point in my script, I want to update certain columns of this data-frame by calling in an update function. The function looks like this: # get events data. This populates a global event data frame in the R-script events <- getEvents(con, eventsFilePath) # events has columns eventid, timeStamp, isSynchronized, timeDiff; with millions of

exec when missing a file but service installed.
Hi all, I am new to this list and puppet. I am working at the Rutherford Appleton Lab and am part of a team that looks after several hundred servers mainly running Scientific Linux (based on RedHat). I am currently looking at puppet to be used to perform what is currently done by kickstart scripts, with these performing an on going configuration job once the systems are built. My current
