Flushing RAM contents?
A user wants to time a command/program/application and ensure the full
contents of that command's data management has been flushed from RAM/cache
and saved to disk. Is there a way to ensure the cache/RAM is flushed to
disk, or is the flushing a function of the kernel or the application?
This happens to be on a 64-bit Intel system with 64-bit CentOS 5, fully
patched. But even if the

Patching XP clients on Samba PDC
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
Does anyone have a good suggestion for patching XP clients on a Samba
PDC domain? I've tried using autoit and sysinternal's psexec to write
a script to do this but this doesn't work well because the computer
has to be active and our machines lock the machine if it's not active
in 15 minutes.
I hate having to log onto every

[samba_upgradedns] Error parsing DNS data
Hello,
I am trying to change over from bind9 to internal dns.
For some reason I keep getting the following error:
Error parsing DNS data from '/opt/samba/private/dns/TH01.INET.zone' ()
I have inspected TH01.INET.ZONE but I could not find an error.
I do not understand this error message. I am hoping someone could help
me with this issue please. Your help will be very much appreciated.

[Samba 4.0.9 | Win 7 x64 | Office 2007 x86 | Folder Redirection | Local Cache] : Word-documents, Corrupt
Hello,
First of all I would like to thank the Samba Project Group for this state
of the art software. I would like to thank every body for helping each
other out.
Please ignore my poor English writing. It is not my native language.
Although: I do the best I can.
We use Samba for a while now. We started with version 4.0.6 and updated
each time. Now we are at version 4.0.9 and we are planning to

Fun with nosetuid!
On an unpatched Centos 4.4 system I chmod'd /usr/bin/sudo to ug+s, and set
the filesystem in /etc/fstab to defaults, nosetuid. Reboot, and am told
sudo needs to be set to setuid root.
An ls -l shows rwsrws-- root root sudo
I had to use a rescue CD to undo /etc/fstab for the filesystem partition
so sudo would work.
What am I missing?
Thanks.

LVM, usb drives, Active Directory
I have a client with a handful of USB drives connected to a CentOS
box. I am charged with binding the USB drives together into a single
LVM for a cheap storage data pool (10 x 1 TB usb drives = 10 TB cheap
storage in a single mount point).
The next fun piece is how to incorporate that storage space into an
existing Active Directory structure to apply AD acls for limited
access.
I'd rather

Windows Updates management using Samba
Hi,
I was just wondering there if there is anything/setup to make a Samba
3/4 PDC to fetch MS Windows Updates from the Microsoft website and
push it to the clients. Some thing Like WSUS?
If it is not already th ere is there any plans to add this
functionality to Samba?
I am wondering how updates are done on Windows Machines under a Samba domain.
The data transfer multiplies with the no. of

Automatic Windows Patch Deployment (OS Agnostic)
A month ago I mentioned on this list work on a automated package
deployment tool for Windows systems, which is server agnostic. At the
time, I didn't have the time to put it up in a place for public
consumption. I do now.
The utility is named wpkg (punny isn't it?) It's nothing more than a
simple .js (jscript) file which needs to be run on Windows, from a
directory containing three

[LLVMdev] Compiler warnings with gcc-4.7.1
I just switched gcc from 4.6.2 to 4.7.1 and see the massive amount of
warnings, see few examples below.
They mostly didn't exist with gcc-4.6.2.

You can join a Windows Server to a Samba4 Domain controller and set up the WSUS server role and it should work. HOWEVER, if you are going to point all your devices at the WSUS server, you will require CALs for the devices or the users using them to maintain licensing compliance with Microsoft. At this point, you have paid for the number of Windows Server CALs you need to run actual Active

[ANNOUNCE] ESFQ for Linux 2.6.12-rc1
http://fatooh.org/esfq-2.6/
http://fatooh.org/esfq-2.6/esfq-2.6.12-rc1.tar.gz
This version no longer interferes with the original SFQ; unlike previous
versions, you can still use an unpatched tc with SFQ. Patching tc is
still needed for ESFQ, though. I''ve tested this patch with Linux 2.6.11
as well.
Please tell me if you have any problems. I''m subscribed to lartc again.

XP local policy vs Samba pdbedit?
If I set up a room of Win XP Pro w/SP2 systems, hardened via local policy
and gpedit.msc, and add them to a samba domain running from an unpatched,
out-of-box install of RHEL 5.0, how will the local XP policies differ from
any changes I make to pdbedit on the Samba side? Which takes
priority/preference?
Thanks.

what percent of time are there unpatched exploits against default config?
Suppose I have a CentOS 5.7 machine running the default Apache with no
extra modules enabled, and with the "yum-updatesd" service running to pull
down and install updates as soon as they become available from the
repository. (Assume further the password is strong, etc.) On the other
hand, suppose that as the admin, I'm not subscribed to any security alert

lustre 1.8.3 upgrade observations
Hello,
1) when compiling the lustre modules for the server the ./configure script behaves a bit odd.
The --enable-server option is silently ignored when the kernel is not 100% patched.
Unfortunatly the build works for the server, but during the mount the error message claims about a missing "lustre" module which is loaded and running.
What is really missing are the ldiskfs et al

[PATCH] multi-page blkfront/blkback patch
Hi,
Here is the refreshed version of the multi-page ring patch for
blkfront and blkback. I currently don''t have time to refresh the
blktap part of the patch. The patch should apply cleanly to the
