Controlling use of roaming profiles
We are using a system running Red Hat Linux 7.0 with Samba 2.2.7a as our PDC. For the most part, we want to use roaming profiles, so that users' settings are backed up via the PDC, and are available if they need to change or reinstall their Windows desktop machine. However, there are a few Windows systems (running NT 4.0 or Windows 2000) for which we would like to be able to disable roaming

List search question
Hello everyone, I'm a new member here at Samba lists. I've been a lightweight Samba user for several years, but now I am investigating replacing our Active Directory domain with a pure Samba domain. I already have a few questions, but before I start posting them I though I'd ask about searching the list archives. I might be missing something here, but I haven't found a way to

User Profiles
Hello all. I'm in the process of getting roaming profiles up and running on a RH 7.3 installation, running as a PDC on an 'NT Domain'. I've been reading the PROFILES.txt, and need to clear some things up. Do the rules that apply for WinNT, apply to Win2000, specifically the NTConfig.Pol file. If it does, I can't find it on either the samba server or the Win2000 machine,

Win98 policies,profiles and logon scripts
I am running Samba 2.2.3a and have my users logging into the 'samba domain'. My WinNT and WinXP users are working fine with roaming profiles and policies. My problem is my Win98 users. The logon script doesn't seem to be working, i.e. when I log onto a Win98 machine (logging into the domain), the logon script doesn't run. I have opened up the permissions to the logon script

Large Roaming profiles
Hi, I have large size Roaming profiles in Win2k and Samba. Samba 2.2.2 is acting as a PDC. Does Win2k load all the files from scratch from the samba server everytime a user log in? Or does Win2k or Samba provides some sort of diff mecanism, so that only modified files are loaded from the Samba server(to speed think up)? NTconfig.pol not used
I am running Samba 2.2.7a on SuSE 8.0 and all Windows/XP clients in a PDC configuration. All runs great except for one problem. I cannot get NTconfig.pol to be used. I have placed it in the netlogon share and read/execute permissions are wide open. I turn on samba loglevel=3 and I never see samba even try to look for NTconfig.pol, or any *.pol file. This occurs for all of my clients. Any

W2K Workstation not reading NTConfig.pol
I have recently set up an small SAMBA network(just my server and a W2K SP4 Workstation). My Server is acting as a PDC. Everything seems to work flawlessly, users, roaming profiles, netlogon script, etc... But I cannot make this machine to read my NTConfig.pol file. I have it at my NETLOGON share [/srv/netlogon] with rwxr-xr-x permissions. I have tried with different filenames (NTConfig.POL,

user's profile not deleted
Hi, I would like to ask, will the roaming profile directory in C:\Documents and Settings\username, will be deleted once the user logs out? Mine isn't. I'm worried that, for a thousand users, one workstation would have a thousand directories? I believe those are not local profiles, since it is saved into the server every time the user logs out.

understanding users mapping
Hello all, Im Fran, and im from Spain. Im currently using an english book to setup my samba server, and im having problems understanding it. I explain my problem. I dont want to use root to join clients to the domain; i prefer creating a plain user. Ok, so, the steps i follow are: net groupmap add unixgroup=srvadmins ntgroup="Server Admins" net groupmap add ntgroup="Domain

%L substitution error
Hi, as I wrote some weeks ago, I walk through on the SaMBa Guide/Making happy users. I struggled some days with roaming profiles. The client didn't find the default profile on the server (but it applied NTConfig.POL from that share). Finally I found in the windows roaming profile debug log an error: it always referred to \\%L\profiles. When I changed the When I set logon home parameter in

Samba PDC with group using same desktop
My goal is to have a business with multiple locations, all have the same desktop for a certain user group. The quick Launch programs, Start Menu and Desktop icons should all be the same, and be 'read only' -- meaning they can't change them. I'm using ClearOS for the PDC, and I have it working already as the PDC, but I'm not quite sure how to setup the remote profiles and lock

Samba PDC and big files
Hello, I'm trying to setup a PDC with Samba, but I have the known problem of the roaming profiles: big files. I think it's difficult to guarantee that a inexperienced user will copy is downloaded files, documents, or whatever, to a H:\ share instead of is handy desktop. Other problem is the files of Outlook or Thunderbird that can get big. The goal is to avoid email configuration each

ntconfig.pol for samba3.5.6+openldap+Win7
Hi all, All clients are Win 7. How can I transmit rules defined in gpedit for users (for example forbid execution of regedit) to the Default User roaming profile? Is it done with a ntconfig.pol ? If yes, how can I make it ? Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

profiles, profdata & homes
Hello, Due the trees, I can't see the forest. I understand the concept of home directories on the file server becoming a share for the user on the smb-client computer. I have a vague idea of "profiles", but I'm lost at "profdata". How does that last one fit in? Where can I read more about it? (profdata is common keyword on the search engines) Is there a document

how to debug roaming profiles
Hi, I had to install a new Samba server (3.0.23b). Home dir and account were copied. I join a machine to the domain, but the stored profiles do not work. How can I debug that (in which log files)? I checked the usual suspect: permissions; they seem ok to me. Thanks, Marc Delisle

pseudo domain login (fast user switch)
I've got a bunch of Win XP Pro machines, and I setup domain logins to the samba server so I'd have roaming profiles, etc. Alas, I've now discovered that windows doesn't let you use fast user switching when you do domain logins. I really want fast user switching -- is there a way to configure samba / winXP to fake some the domain login features? I don't care about password sync
