nis password file -> smbpasswd?
ive got several hundred user accounts in NIS that i need to get into the
smbpasswd file. since samba doesn't actually use NIS, but can only be in
sync with it, what is the best way to get all these passwords into
smbpaswd? I'd hate to have to have all users re-enter their passwords...
anyone done this before? thanks in advance,

timeout after inactivity on mount.cifs
Hi Ivan,
Not sure if you have found a solution or not since your post was back in
February, but I thought I'd reply as this is the only thread I could
find anywhere that mentions a problem that I was having on a recent
installation of Arch Linux.
A few minutes after boot all of my CIFS/Samba mounts would go offline
and I'd get an error "The host is down." But I could unmount

experiment so i am posting here my problem. Please read entire message (is a

Cannot change ACL from Windows Explorer
Hello all,
I'm implementing Zimbra 4.5.6 and Samba PDC and a slave LDAP (with Samba
too). Thanks for the great tutorial from Greg and friends.
I put all the files shared in the slave LDAP (with Samba). So, client
authenticated to the master LDAP Samba PDC, and then access the files in
the slave server. All is running OK.
There is only one obstacle: I cannot change Samba ACL using windows

Troubles creating machine trust accounts
I have set up several machine trusts with samba and they have worked
correctly. However for some reason the last machine accounts I tried to
make are not working correctly. Here is what I did to create the trust
accounts:
useradd -g machines -d /dev/null -c "ids8" -s /bin/false ids8$
passwd -l ids8$ (it even tells me that I have success)
smbpaswd -a -m ids8

Time and Login restrictions
Hello,
I wanted to improve a bit Samba security, and add same
new functions so I worked around its code. Changes that I've done
are described below.
If anyone is interested, and wants my patch for testing
please send me a message. I'm not joining it here as it has
20kB gzipped.
Patch is against clean Samba-1.9.18p8.

Upgrading Samba
I have a fairly old Samba server, 3.0.25, on CentOS 4.8. I'd like to update
it to something more modern, so I grabbed the "Enterprise Samba" 3.5 RPMs
for RHEL, and went to work on a test machine.
After upgrading via "rpm -U ./*.rpm", starting nmbd and smbd, I can no
longer log in to the domain, I get:
netlogon_creds_server_check failed. Rejecting auth request from client

Printer Passwords and Print Auditing
Hello to all you folks,
I've got TWO questions.
1) I've been trying to password the use of my two laser printers so that
printing has to be assisted by my computer attendant (we are losing too much
paper and toner to people clicking print five to ten times). But, I have
not figured out how to force passwords on my samba printer (HP LJ1200
running under cupsd and samba). Is it possible

Are tdbsam and smbpasswd linked?
Hi All,
I just added three users to my tdbsam with
"pdbedit -a -u username" (had to do "useradd"
first). All three appeared in tdbsam as they
should, as verified with "pdbedit -L".
But, all three also appeared in /etc/samba/smbpasswd.
This is not a mistake, they were not there before.
Are "tdbsam" and "smbpasswd" linked? I am confused.

logon.bat: switching from smbpasswd to tdbsam
Hey,
I have a fedora core 1 machine with samba 3 PDC. I switched the password backend ('passdb' ) from 'smbpasswd' to 'tdbsam'. The problem is that my win 98 machine stop mapping my home directory. I swtiched back to 'smbpasswd' and it works fine. 'net time \\server /set /yes' and 'net use p: \\server\apps' work perfectly.
My logon.bat contains the

NTLM authentication with squid using smbpasswd/tdbsam?
Hi,
I want to set up squid (2.6.9) with Samba (3.0.24) using
NTLM authentication. I don't want to authenticate against an AD
server; I just want to authenticate against a smbpasswd backend
without sending the password over the network in the clear.
The squid server is on the same box a the Samba server providing
file/print services to XP workstations.
The primary way of using NTLM seems

pdbedit: importing smbpasswd to tdbsam
Hi there,
I'm trying to import a smbpasswd-file into a Samba 3.0 installation on Debian
Sarge using tdbsam as sole passdb backend.
Copying pdbedit's documentation I used
pdbedit -i smbpasswd:/root/smbpasswd.old
The error message returned was tdb_update_sam: Failing to store a SAM_ACCOUNT
for [foo] without a primary group RID
where foo is the username to be imported.

create smbpasswd/tdbsam from ldapsam/LDAP query?
As some of you may know, I'm trying to set up Samba BDC on a disk- and fan-less tiny mipsel_CPU router running OpenWRT distribution.
I already managed to compile Samba 3.0.21a and OpenLDAP 2.3.18 for it, and they seem to work fine.
The problem is, this tiny distribution for routers doesn't seem to have anything like Name Service Switch (NSS), and relies solely on /etc/passwd

Stuck on Problem with Joining Domains...please help!
after many hours of tries, I am still stuck with a simple: I have Samba 3.0.1 ore running fine on a red hat 9.0 box (installed from RPM) when I try to join a domain I get the infamous invalid user name or bad password error from the Win2K SP2 machines. I am really getting lost here, I have checked the root password in smbpasswd database and have used the smbpasswd command, I still get that

Request SMBPASWD feature
One of the sticking points when using SaMBa is that two sets of
passwords need to be maintained, one for SMB and the other for
the host OS, usually a UNIX variant. A partial solution exists
on some systems in the form of SMB-PAM modules. They let the
UNIX like system validate passwords against the SMB password
database. The problem is that, allegedly, you have to be on a
WinXX box to change your

samba migration from PDC tdbsam to BDC tdbsam
Hello
According to my post "samba migration to another distro llinux" on samba
lists I would like to make migration of samba from one machine to
another.
I can't find information how to transfer accounts, policies, users, domain
SID and other options from PDC (tdbsam backend)(current server) to BDC
(tdbsam backend)future server.
I found some info but its about migration from

migrating from Samba3 with tdbsam to samba4 AD server?
What's the best path to do this?
I currently have a SAMBA3 domain controller using tdbsam and would
like to migrate to Samba4 as an AD controller. I assume that this will
require loading my existing user database into ldap.
What's the best path for this? Should I look for a samba3 to samba4
migration, continuing to use tdbsam in samba4, and then convert to
ldap, or convert my existing
