samba - bind : program guideline suggestion
Hi all !
I'm currently developping a program that takes the smbtree output, parse it,
retrieve all connected workstations, then call nmblookup for each
workstation, resolve the IP, create a BIND zone file with this.
At this point, the programs works; I use system( " ") calls and unsafe
temporairy files. I just wanted to get it up quickly
Now; to secure this programs; I tought

Newer SMBTREE versions don't find all systems.
Hi,
Trying the latest version again tonight 4.6.7 it has the same problem
I've seen with the prior newer versions as well. The one I went back
to was 4.4.15 which works. What is happening right now is there is a
Win2K3 box that is the domain server, with thecompanydomain.com
(NetBIOS domain name: COMPANY). That has the __MSBROWSE__ on it. I
have a Linux Wheezy system on that is part of

Problems getting list of shares
I'm trying to do something that should be simple, but my current
solution isn't working 100%
All I need is a list of smb shares on the network.
I'm doing this:
/usr/bin/nmblookup -M -- -
and then use this on each ip returned:
/usr/bin/smbclient -g -p 139 -NL <ip addr>
That works for most cases but it fails to find all the shares

Trouble with install, still
I've tried building it on a server that I know has pretty much every
library possible for a program to need, but I'm still not getting a
good samba install.
I'm on white-dwarf linux (kernel 2.4.25), gcc 3.3.2, Samba 3.0.2a
White-dwarf is home-grown, very much like slackware.
When I configure and make and make install, I don't get any errors, but
I when I look for some files

query WINS for all registered machines in an workgroup or domain
Hi,
I searched the documentation and the web but cannot find a way to query
a wins server for all registered machines in an workgroup or domain.
If I want to ask the wins with nmblookup, I have to specify a single
name to lookup, wildcards are not allowed.
If using the broadcast facility I can search with wildcards:
nmblookup '*' -B 192.168.0.255
querying * on 192.168.0.255
192.168.0.7

Samba findsmb and smbtree inconsistent
I have a samba server 3.0.28a set up on ubuntu 8.04, which is accessed by a
windows xp client.
The windows machine can see and download all the shared folders from the
linux machine, and the linux machine can download from the windows machine
with smbclient.
However, when I issue "findsmb" the linux machine only reports itself, not
the windows machine. The man pages show it

Can't see shares, and also smbmount works but mount -t cifs doesn't
Hi
(this is most likely a newbie question).
A couple of problems. I have a linux guest (puppy) running on vmplayer on a friend's machine, which runs WinXP home. I have folder sharing enabled on the host for a few different folders. I am trying to mount the winxp host shared folders onto the linux guest.
First problem is that I can't seem to see the shares. smbtree only lists the

Compile from source FAILED - Mandrake 7.2
Mates,
The saga continues, but THANK GOD 'make revert' WORKS. Here is my
problem. I am trying to compile 3.0.7 from source and install it on my
Mandrake 7.2 box. The gcc compiler is 2.95.3. Here is what I have done:
[stop samba]
# ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-smbmount
# make
# make install
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
Here is what I get:

Unable to view samba shares
Hi list.
I'm new to this list, so please bear with me. I've got samba 2.2.8a on Solaris 9 (SPARC). I've run all the tests. testparm runs fine. Other tests:

Can't reach Samba shares from Win XP Pro
This seems to be common enough problem. I've used a variety of methods
(command line as well as utilities like LinNeighborhood) to mount XP
shares on my RedHat 8.0 running Samba 2.2.7. I get consistent problems
the other way around. Despite a couple of shares on my Linux partition,
I am just unable to do get to it. Network Neighborhood shows my
Linux/Samba server but no shares, nor can I

Unable to connect to smb shares from second machine in workgroup
I have a pretty simply home LAN with a Linux box (Mandrake 9.1) and 2 XP
boxes. The workgroup is named UNIVERSE and the machines are earth
(Linux), voyager (XP) and starbase (XP). (smb.conf has security=user).
Voyager can browse over to \\earth\share no problem. Recently I
connected starbase to my LAN using a wireless router. When on starbase I
cannot browse to \\earth\share. When I do so I

Can't open shares using netbios names
I need a pointer to what Fine Manual I should go read to set up my
netbios name resolution, because all my attempts to use netbios names
are being resolved against dns ...
I have one subnet (192.168.2/24), with several Fedora 11 machines and
several Windows XP machines, and a couple SMB/CIFS NAS units which also
share printers. No domain, it's all just a workgroup. The WinXP machines

Can connect directly, but not browse samba server from Windows Workgroup network
Dear Samba gurus,
I have a Fedora 8 linux server, running samba 3.0.28a-0.fc8. I am
doing the simplest thing of all - exposing a public read-only share
within MS Workgroup environment. My server has a fixed local IP
address (192.168.1.200) and it's on the same subnet as the rest of the
machines. The server and machines are connected to a 24 port CISCO
switch.
My problem is that I can

static link libsmbclient.a got a lot of error, and how to include "smbtree" feature in program
Hi All:
I have some questions when writing a lib with libsmbclient-dev ,my target environment is on any linux system.
1 I want to static link libsmbclient.a instead of using libsmbclient.so, but I got a lot of error , am I able to use libsmbclient-dev using static link?
2 I found that ?smbtree? command is more stable in finding all those domains and servers than

Cannot access Samba shares after latest update
Yesterday (12/17/16), I updated my Centos 7 machine with the latest
updates. Prior to the updates both my Windows 10 and Centos 7 machines
were able to access Samba shares hosted on a Fedora 25 server.
After rebooting the Centos 7 machine, I get the dreaded "Unable to
access location --- Failed to receive share list from server ---
Connection refused" message when trying to mount the

Pruning embedded samba 3.6 installation
I'm using the Yocto Project to build an embedded distro, to which I'm adding
Samba 3.6 from OpenEmbedded. Doing so increases my root file system from
about 63MB to 175MB. I seem to be building a large Samba server with a small
ancillary operating system tacked onto it.
I listed the files in my file system image, and see that lots of the
commands are quite large. I understand that Samba 4

Odd file locking issue with one of our SMB servers....
Samba version: 3.6.15 on openSUSE 12.2.
We?ve got a series of file shares exported from one of our storage systems. Periodically, we?ve a user from our accounting department that is getting errors from Excel that the file she?s trying to open is opened by someone else (it isn?t) and prompts her to either open it as read-only, or to cancel the open operation. When this occurs, she hits cancel,

smbtree command shows nothing with SMB2/3
Hi,
I am using samba 4.5.4 in my fedora machine.
when I execute "smbtree" command it shows nothing with SMB2 protocol.
If I change my client max protocol=NT1 in smb.conf, I can see all server
present in my Network.
looks like below bug.
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12431
Can it be fixed or someother options can be used for the same to work with
protocol greater than NT1
