changing macintosh type and creator codes
Anytime a PC on our network copies a file to our server and a macintosh client goes to view that file, the type and creator codes are incorrect. We are running Samba for Windows clients and Xinet KA-Share for Mac clients. I think it has something to do with the resource forks. I can copy a file to the server from a Mac then copy the file from the server to a windows machine and back again

Setting up PXE server
Folks On a lark, I am trying to set up a PXE server so I can use network boots to load new computers {some of which are virtual) at home. It's more of an intellectual exercise than a work necessity. I've read several "how to" documents, and even the one on the RedHat site doesn't help. (For example, it refers to /etc/xinet.d instead of /etc/xinetd.d, and the careless

Problem with SWAT on MacOS X 10.3.3 server
Hi everybody I have installed SWAT services under MacOS X Server 10.3.3 by adding the service to Netinfo manager and set enabled = yes in /etc/xinet.d/swat file. I try to login as root in Safari (I have enabled the root account), but keep getting the messages that the name and the password is incorrect. Any ideas anyone ? Best regards Torsten

Fatal: EOF while reading environment from master Error
Hello all! I guess it's a standard reason for joining a mailing list, but I have a problem. For some reason, whenever I try to start dovecot, be it from the xinet.d or from the commandline, I get this rather bizzare error. I can't even work out what it means, so I can't even begin to debug it. There is nothing extra in /var/log/messages, so I'm out of ideas. I've tried it

Tuning OSX samba for WAN vs LAN
Hello my Sambese friends, Has anyone got info on tuning the SMB client in OSX for connecting to Samba servers across a WAN/VPN? I get decent performance locally, but when I reach across our VPN link to another site, throughput falls right to garbage when compared with FTP. Thanks in advance for any tips. --Rob Rob LaRose systems administrator imaginary forces | 530 west 25th street | new

Samba library error - Solaris 8
Hello all, I've got a newly installed Solaris 8 system running the Feb 2005 patch cluster. I downloaded the following packages from sunfreeware and installed on this new system (installed in the order listed): gcc_small-3.3.2-sol8-sparc-local libiconv-1.8-sol10-sparc-local ncurses-5.4-sol10-sparc-local popt-1.7-sol10-sparc-local readline-5.1-sol10-sparc-local

EL6, xinetd, and permissions. What am I missing?
Staging for a rollout of EL 6, and ran into a very strange permissions issue with xinetd that defies all (my) logic. It's a script called "spfiled" that we use for messaging between our server cluster servers. I'm trying to get it to run with "least permissions necessary". Because it reads/writes files in conjunction with a web-based service, it runs as user

Paravirtualized Solaris Update 6 (10/08)?
Gurus; I''ve been running Solaris 10 on a HVM domain on my machine (running SXCE snv_93 x86) for some time now. Now that Solaris 10 Update 6 (10/08) has been released, I tried creating a Paravirtualized Guest domain but got the same error message I got previously... # virt-install -n sol10 -p -r 1560 --nographics -f /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/sol10 -l /stage/sol-10-u6-> Starting

Read-only (forensic) mounts of ZFS
Hi I''m looking into forensic aspects of ZFS, in particular ways to use ZFS tools to investigate ZFS file systems without writing to the pools. I''m working on a test suite of file system images within VTOC partitions. At the moment, these only have 1 file system per pool per VTOC partition for simplicity''s sake, and I''m using Solaris 10 6/06, which may not

Using pxelinux mboot.c32 to multiboot Solaris
Hi All, Now that we have multiboot capable pxelinux, thanks to mboot.c32, I decided to try and remove pxegrub from my x86 jumpstart infrastructure since, in theory, pxelinux can now do it all. The problem I'm having is I'm not very sure I'm following Tim's documentation correctly... I'm not 100% what comes after the --- and whether the Sun kernel needs it's arguments

Swat Setup Information
I am inquiring about setup of the SWAT utility I have installed Red Hat 7.0 with samba installed during the initial setup of Redhat. I have two network cards installed in my Server and I am connected to the internet via a Cable Modem. When I try to start SWAT netscape displays the message that it cannot find the local host on port 90. I have downloaded the book over samba and I have also tried to

Advantage of 'kerberos method = secrets and keytab' over 'kerberos method = system keytab'
A question regarding the “kerberos method” configuration option in smb.conf: Are there any practical differences between using ’secrets and keytab’ and ’system keytab’? I’ve been running Samba servers using both methods for a long time and both seems to work more or less fine, but since we’re having this “login hickup at 10 hour service ticket expiration problem” I’m trying to find out if this

scrub on snv-b107
scrub completed after 1h9m with 0 errors on Tue Feb 17 12:09:31 2009 This is about twice as slow as the same srub on a solaris 10 box with a mirrored zfs root pool. Has scrub become that much slower?
