"best practices" for Rails serving RESTful JSON services for use by AngularJS, Ember.js, etc.
I''ve been writing a gem to implement and extend common controller functionality so that Rails can be used with Javascript frameworks like AngularJS (which we are using), Ember.js, etc. in such a way that the user doesn''t have to tweak a a bunch of rails g controller boilerplate code to provide services for use in these frameworks that in turn would require various changes to

IMAP_Authenticatable Problem
Good morning all, I''ve been using the imap_authenticatable plugin for about a year now without incident. All of a sudden, I tried logging in this morning and this error is showing up in the logs. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or how to fix it? Thanks, Pete NoMethodError (undefined method `disconnect'' for nil:NilClass):

Cucumber - RSpec matcher
I must be missing something obvious here but I cannot seem to see it. I have this step definition: When /entity named "(.*)" has a legal name "(.*)"/ do |name, legal| myentity = Entity.find_by_entity_common_name!(name.hll_keycase) myentity.entity_legal_name.should equal legal.hll_keycase end Which fails with this: And the entity named "Myuser" has a legal

Oddness with fieldnames containing an underscore
Hi all, I''m not sure if this is a cucumber or webrat thing given that I only starting tinkering with both last night for the first time (testing newb as well), but I''ve come across an oddity when trying to write a scenario to create a user. Scenario: Register new user Given I am on the new user page And I fill in "login" with "fredf"

nested forms and attr_accessable
Rails 2.3.5 I am working on a nested form that assigns roles to users through a table called clearances. I have attr_acessable turned off globally in an initializer: ActiveRecord::Base.send(:attr_accessible, nil) I have this set in clearance.rb attr_accessible(:description, :effective_from, :role_id, :superceded_after, :user_id) And this is what params looks like after the

uninitialized constant
Hi guys, I''m part way through a RoR application, for some reason whenever I add new controllers (using scaffold) I get an uninitialized constant [name of controller] error. The first few controllers work fine, the only thing I can see that I''ve changed is the layout file (but scaffold creates a new layout for each controller so can''t see that being the problem). You

path vs. url
When using named RESTful routes, when should one use the generated ..._path helpers, and when the ..._url helpers? Say I did this in routes.rb: map.resources :users Where should I use users_path, new_user_path, etc., and where should I use users_url, new_user_url...? Thanks! More idiomatic way of writing a filter
Is there a more elegant way of writing this? def verify_user @user = User.find_by_username params[:username] if @user.nil? message = xml.error do |xm| xm.message "User does not exists: #{params[:username]}" end render :xml => message return false else true end end Thanks, Joel --

Validation error handling on related models
I have 2 models, entity and client. Entity has_one client and client belongs_to entity. Entity has attributes name and legal_name. Entity also has an unique index on (lower(name)). The pKey for both is the conventional Rails id. Client has a fKey constraint on entity_id and is indexed in entity_id. In controllers/clients_controller.rb I have: # GET /clients/new # GET /clients/new.xml

multiple views, and some routers
Hi, I''m new to Rails (just a Java Programmer tired of having to configure a lot of xml''s and mapping classes just to make a simple page (...)) anyway, I''m experiencing some problems with routers, i''ve created a new project using Rails 2.0 and created a scaffold for users. so i have the following: users/new.html.erb ... Spec custom finders
I have some finders in my models where I write some of the sql myself. I of course want to test these, but am not sure the best way. Should I just let them roll through to the db, and verify they return the correct objects based on the fixtures I load, or should I spec the actual query? I know that DB access is sort of frowned upon, but is this a situation where it is more or less acceptable? My

tips on how to write a controller test for models associated with currently logged in user
I have a controller test here: http://gist.github.com/275616, which works fine when account is an independent model, however I want: an account to be a property of user, ( and created and associated when a user is) when the user goes to /account/edit it should on edit the account of the logged in user - I can make rails do this, but I''m utterly baffled how I should alter this test to

deprecation warning in Rails 3 about Base.named_scope
I recently upgraded to Rails 3, and this error has come up ubiquitously: DEPRECATION WARNING: Base.named_scope has been deprecated, please use Base.scope instead. Any ideas on how to get rid of it? Or should I just wait for something? There''s actually no place in my application where the code "Base.named_scope" exists, so I assume the problem is inherent in gems that

uninitialized constant - Please Help Me...
Hello everyone, I''ve decided to take the step into creating a mini-forum for my website where users can open new posts on exixting topics and allow people to discuss things etc... I am following a tutorial in the book: APRESS - Practical Rails Social Networking Sites and have hit a minor issue. Part of the Forum requirements is to add a moderator role to allow only certain individuals

RSpec story failing because of routing error on "/"
Greetings! Here''s the problem. When running tests on the restful_authentication plugin, I am getting a routing error on "/". Which I don''t really understand, because the route "/" certainly does exist as I can confirm when I run ./script/server and point my browser at http://localhost:3000/ Here is an example of the error I am getting when I run

sending additional parameters to before_filter
i am trying to create a system so that different users have different priviliges on my application. i was going to modify my authorize function so that i could pass the required role to it and have it check the current user for that role. i am using before_filter and would like to have just one function instead of writing one for each role like so: authorize(role) instead of:
