querying status of worker with job_key
Hi, Is it possible to start a worker with job_key and then ask_status of that specific worker with the job_key? MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'', :worker_method => :auth) and then MiddleMan.ask_status(:worker => :auth_worker, :job_key=>''1'') >From my testing of the new backgroundrb, asking status using job key

Autostarting and job keys...
I''ve now got 5 processes auto started. But I when I query the MiddleMan for their keys (in script/console), it doesn''t find them. Looking at the start script, it looks like it might be creating a new MiddleMan object for each autostart BackgrounDRb::MiddleMan.new.new_worker(:class => entry[''class''], Even changing it to

nil.send_request = Incorrect worker name?
Hi, Would greatly appreciate some help with this. Is the following error caused by an incorrect worker name? You have a nil object when you didn''t expect it! The error occurred while evaluating nil.send_request /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/packet-0.1.5/lib/packet/packet_master.rb:44:in `ask_worker'' Here''s what I''m doing in my rails console.

Couple questions about backgroundrb
So, what''s the status of this project? I''m a little confused. The documentation at http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org seems out of date. It refers to http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/tags/release-0.2.1, which doesn''t work. All I want is a way to easily set up tasks that should run periodically. Some stuff should run every 10 seconds, some stuff once a day, etc.

failed to find slave socket - (RuntimeError)
Hi everyone, I''ve a class that try to spawn two workers, every 5 seconds. The code is something like: while true do MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :researches_worker,:job_key => :researches) MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :products_worker,:job_key => :products) sleep(5) end I''m using ":job_key", so if a worker hasn''t already ended its work

Mongrel + BackgrounDRb + File Column = Upload Progress Bar?
Hi there, I''ve been digging around trying to find some information (mostly examples) on how one would handle a progress bar upload using BackgrounDRb and File Column. I did read http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org/ and Ezra''s blog of course, but I still have a few questions. I made a simple upload form (as a test) that is submitted to the "upload_song" action. def

How to add some process control...
Hi, First off, thanks Ezra for showing the way with BackgrounDrb. It''s a real godsend. I wanted to add a bit of job control to the system so that I could cancel DRB processes and so on. I thought I''d share how I did it in case anyone should find it useful or have feedback. I wanted to be able to put checkpoints into the drb job so that I could let the job do whatever needs to

Need help with singleton worker
We have a fairly expensive task that we''d rather not schedule too many instances of in parallel. Couldn''t get pool_size to limit the amount of workers, and I figure that''s hardly optimal anyway, so would like to have the work queued up for a single named worker instead, running as soon as possible. Using MiddleMan.schedule_worker() with :job_key does start off a

State of backgroundrb (dupe?)
Hi, pardon if this is a duplicate mail, I forgot to click the subscription link the first time around. I''ve been using backgroundrb for a while now (older version) and I''ve had so many headaches because of it that I began looking for a replacement technology. And then I saw the new and shiny backgroundrb website, looking good! Initially I used the version maintained by

Large requests break BackgrounDRb
Hello, I think I may have discovered a bug in BackgrounDRb. It seems that when the data being requested is large (via send_request), say in the range of 64k+, it crashes or at least incapacitates BackgrounDRb. For example, take these two workers: class SmallWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :small_worker set_no_auto_load(true) attr_reader :payload def create(args)

:job_key acting weird?
Hi all I''m experiencing something strange with a :job_key, it took me a very long time to find out a worker wasn''t doing it''s job because of the name of my job_key. The first one I tried was :make_kohier, and with that name (and lot''s of other ones) I can''t get the worker to work. I do get my key in return, but the job doesn''t start

periodic scheduling
I''ve been using backgroundrb since back in March 2007 or so. It''s been working mostly OK for me, but since the old version doesn''t seem to work out of the box with rails 2.0 for me, I decided to test out the latest version. So, I''m looking at the scheduling, and trying to figure out the best option for what I want to do. What I have is a set of workers that

Updates and Fixes on Trunk
Hi, I am pushing some updates and fixes that addresses much of the issues that we talked about since last couple of days. 1. Use configuration option :debug_log: false to disable backgroundrb_debug.log. 2. As shown below, use lazy_load option to disable aggressive loading of models ( and somewhat stupid too). 3. MiddleMan.delete_worker(:worker => :foo_worker) will now ABORT the worker, it

problem with worker status
Hi, I have a page were users can start jobs that may take several hours to run. BackgrounDrb is perfect for me and seems to be working well most of the time but some times I have the following problem: My worker is set up like this: class UploadWorker < BackgrounDRb::MetaWorker set_worker_name :upload_worker set_no_auto_load(true) def create(args = nil ) file = args[:file]

Updates and Fixes and more of awesome stuff
1. Whenever you ask BackgrounDRb to perform a particular task using: MiddleMan.ask_work(:worker => :rss_worker,:worker_method => :fetch_url, :data => "www.google.com") Your task would be performed then and there. But, if your worker is busy, task won''t be queued, except in socket buffer. And your request may get lost. This isn''t generally a problem

autostart
Hi, Does backgroundrb 0.2.1 support autostart? I''ve tried to set up autostart by adding something like the following in backgroundrb.yml: autostart: 1: class: bar_worker args: '''' However, that does not seem to work. I also tried the scheduling mechanism like this in backgroundrb_schedules.yml: bar: :class: :bar_worker :job_key: :bar1

Update
Folks- I just commited another revision of the plugin. Nothing huge in this update but some extra features. Acl lists are now configurable in the config file. So you will want to blow away and recreate your config file again. Thanks to Georg Friedrich for this. And I applied Gunter Ladwig''s patch for singleton worker classes. These are workers that only have one instance of
