Backgroundrb needs a new maintainer.
Hello All-
Is there anyone out there that wants to take over as maintainer of
the backgroundrb project? I feel bad because I know lots of folks use
it but I absolutely do not have time to work on it anymore :(.
I''m looking for a new maintainer, I would give you all the access to
the project you need and try to help you come up to speed on the
codebase.

Process status...
I''ve used Railscron in a couple instances, and I liked that fact that
it has a rake task for checking the status of the process. Many times
I use it in the admin interface to allow me to double check that
everything is up and running.
I couldn''t find one for backgroundrb, so here is a simple one.
Probably obvious to everyone, and no doubt there is a better way to do
it:

Autostarting and job keys...
I''ve now got 5 processes auto started. But I when I query the
MiddleMan for their keys (in script/console), it doesn''t find them.
Looking at the start script, it looks like it might be creating a new
MiddleMan object for each autostart
BackgrounDRb::MiddleMan.new.new_worker(:class => entry[''class''],
Even changing it to

repeat_every doesn''t tie in with first_run...
Ezra,
Sorry for inundating the list. In using the autostart, repeat_every,
and first_run, I noticed a behaviour I didn''t expect.
I would like the job to run starting at 2am, and then every 24 hours.
So I set first_run to Time.now.beginning_of_day + 2.hours, and
repeat_every to 24.hours.
The problem is if backgroundrb starts up at 6am (due to a code change
or server bump), then the

Creating workers from workers?
Since MiddleMan is an uninitialized constant in a worker how do you
create new workers inside a worker?
Thank You,

rails_env configuration conflict...
I''ve found a conflict in the way the configuration file is handled, in
particular effecting the setting of the ENV[''RAILS_ENV''] value.
When I attempted to run a worker in production, it would run fine the
first time - the second time would fail because it was trying to
access the development database.
I had created a ''backgroundrb_prodcution.yml'' file

Debugging a worker?
If there is an exception raised in my worker I rescue it and throw it
into the log. This is decent, but it would really help to find out
more information. Like the line number, the stack trace, etc. Is this
possible?
Thanks for your help.
Thank You,
Ben Johnson

Couple questions about backgroundrb
So, what''s the status of this project? I''m a little confused. The
documentation at http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org seems out of date.
It refers to http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/tags/release-0.2.1,
which doesn''t work.
All I want is a way to easily set up tasks that should run
periodically. Some stuff should run every 10 seconds, some stuff once
a day, etc.

Recommended start order when deploying with Capistrano...
When deploying with Capistrano, what''s the recommended start ordering
for BackgrounDRb?
mongrel_stop
backgroundrb_restart
mongrel_start
- or -
mongrel_restart
backgroundrb_restart

backgroundrb_restart
mongrel_restart
Or does it matter?

problems with ActionMailer
Hi all,
I''m trying to create a worker to send a mail to all the users in my
db. Right now I''m doing the tests, this is the code in my worker
(Masivo is the ActionMailer subclass):
def do_work(args)
@progress = 0
@logger.info("MAILER: starting job")
records = Record.find(:all)
total = records.size
records.each_with_index do |record, idx|

Unable to start with Capistrano...
I''ve created a couple of tasks in my deploy.rb file for starting and
stopping backgroundrb on the remote server. The stop task runs fine
and kills the process. And the start task *seems* to run successfully,
but backgroundrb is never started on the remote host.
Has anyone had success with this? Here are my deploy tasks:

right usage of bdrb
Hi,
i''m going to implement a syndication-service, which will get lists in
xml with some meta-data an enclosed video files, which will get encoded
at the end. The syndication run will be startet every five minutes of
a full hour.
So i thought to build 4 Worker. One for checking which feeds to
syndicate (syndication_worker) at a specific time, one for processing
the list

looking for a worker that''s gone
In my app, I store the job key when a worker is fired off and then
check back in periodically to see how its doing. The workers delete
themselves when they''re done. I would expect when I try to get a
worker that has been deleted, I would get nil or a proper exception,
but instead I get:
>> MiddleMan.worker(''foobar'')
NoMethodError: undefined method

Status Update
Heya folks-
I just wanted to give a little status update on the new version of
BackgrounDRb. Skaar has stepped up big time and done a ton of work
getting the new architecture going so big thanks to him. I will be
doing some documentation and a few more tweaks and we should have a
new release shortly.
Cheers-

Need help with backgroundrb''s concepts and installation
Hello backgroundrb-devel
my name is Teeranit Ruangdet. I''m fairly new to Ruby on Rails so please bear
with me here.
I''m currently on a project where I need to import a whole bunch of records
from spreadsheet(.csv) and save them in the database. My problem is that
while I''m importing (huge file...say 5000 employees), no one else can access
the website (it basically block

Drb Connection error on multiple dispatch.fcgi ''s
Hi All,
I''m using Backgroundrb as a general purpose long-running-task back-end
(upload processing, email sending, etc), and it''s been a great solution.
However I''ve recently run into some some intermittent connection issues
that have me baffled. I''m running on apache2/fcgid and the problem
occurs in both devlopment and production mode. The problem seems to

[PATCH] x 2 - Fix for "null pointer exception" when ask_status is called before worker is run, and docfixes
Sorry for attaching patches in emails to the mailing list, but I''m still
unable to login to Devjavu for Backgroundrb (I''m able to login just fine for
Merb''s Devjavu and submitted a ticket successfully).
Anyway, I encountered a bug when trying to #ask_status of a worker before
it''s run (or rather, before its result_hash has been set to something). Not
sure why
