Deprecation of scp protocol and improving sftp client

Inconsistency with the option for defining the destination port
Why is there an inconsistency with the option for the destionation port. ssh -p <port> ... scp -P <port> ... sftp -P <port> ... For scp it is neccessary to be "-P" ( Quote: " Note that this option is written with a capital 'P', because $B!](Bp is already reserved for preserving the times and modes of the file in rcp(1)." ). Also sftp uses already

scp and SGI DMF
Hello, For some time now, our users have been encountering a problem when using scp to overwrite files on our mass-storage system, which uses SGI's DMF product. I don't have any data as to whether or not any other HSMs would be similarly affected. The scenario is that a user is overwriting a file (via scp) that has previously been migrated to tape. The scp opens the file for writing, but

AIX SSH 2.x ssh and /etc/ftpusers rcp rlogin WRONG !
IF ssh is a replacement for rlogin, rsh etc I can accept it respecting rlogin=false as rlogin does and rsh does not, however scp is a replacement for rcp, and rcp does NOT use rlogin attribute, so the implementation is NOT standard as scp fails if rlogin=false, but rcp succeeds, as documented. thanks mark

scp not tolerant of extraneous shell messages
I spent some time debugging a failing Scp that turned out to be caused by the remote shell producing messages on Standard Output that aren't part of the SCP protocol. Scp from a remote system works by running another Scp on the remote system. The remote Scp writes SCP protocol messages (and file data) to its Standard Output, which the local Scp sees as Standard Input. But it's

OpenSSH/scp ->> F-Secure SSH server Problems
Hi, Is there some know problem between the 'scp' client in OpenSSH 2.5.1p1 and F-Secure's SSH 2.4.0 server? The client is running on a Linux (2.2.17) box and server is running on Win2K. When I try to transfer files it asks me for the password (which I provide) then it hangs. Using 'scp -v' didn't provide any helpful info; it's as though the problem happened before

Filter files received on scp server
Hey, So, I would be looking at type A. Forgive me if my understanding of how OpenSSH operates is not reflective of reality. I am assuming that, the file transfer is happening somewhat logically, with a name being known, content written, blah blah. >From reading scp.c, it appears that, the client end at least knows the file name so I must assume the server end must be given it. I am hoping to

spc restarts
I was wondering why scp didn't have a restart-in-the-middle option when transferring a large file. Isn't that something that is supported by the underlying ssh protocol? Is there some other program that can give me this functionality ?

sftp client
As of Sunday evening, OpenSSH has an interactive sftp client. It should be in the more recent snapshots. It would be appreciated if you could test new client and find all the bugs :) Please also have a read of the manpage and ensure that it matches what is implemented. I am working on fixing the ones that I know about, so please try to stay up to date with the snapshots. Thanks, Damien

How rsync can work only with rsh/ssh
Hi, I use rsync with ssh. My question is: how can rsync work only with ssh without scp o sftp? I have installed only rsync and ssh on my windows machine. Is the scp or sftp integrated within rsync? Why rsync need a shell? For login? Thanks in advance. Please respond to my email address too: mail@davideonline.it

scp on the client-side requires scp on the server-side as well
Hi, A couple of days ago I realized that 'scp' on the client-side requires 'scp' on the server-side as well. client:scp -> server:sshd -> server:scp It this really the way it should be? IMHO it seems like a bad design. I usually create a Solaris-package with prngd, sshd, ssh-keygen and name it OpenSSH-3.x.x-serveronly but now I have to also include 'scp'. Is it

scp, sftp, and special characters in filenames
I have not been able to get scp(1) to download a file with a newline in its name. I know that scp(1) requires that remote filenames be escaped for the shell, but that leads to protocol errors. I am also unable to get sftp(1) to handle such files. It fails with an ?unterminated quoted argument? error, no matter how I try to quote the newline. Furthermore, the SFTP CLI is not well-suited to
