arcstat updates
Hi ZFSers, I''ve been working on merging the Joyent arcstat enhancements with some of my own and am now to the point where it is time to broaden the requirements gathering. The result is to be merged into the illumos tree. arcstat is a perl script to show the value of ARC kstats as they change over time. This is similar to the ideas behind mpstat, iostat, vmstat, and friends. The current

fwd: mail server recommendations?
Hi I am re-sending this message to this list, because freebsd-security list could be more suitable for my question about UID / GID settings of Postfix virtual users accounts. in one sentence: "If all virtual users have same UID/GID, is there some real security risk?" Thank You and I am sorry for my bad english ================================== original message from freebsd-isp:

native ZFS on Linux
I see that Pinguy OS, an uber-Ubuntu o/s, includes native ZFS support. Any pointers to more info on this? -- David

Managing large amounts of zones
I'm wondering what others are using for an interface to managing very large amounts of zones and frequent updates? We aren't using DNSSEC at all and are considering changing the code to directly query a backend database and or having a backend database maintain the zone files for pre-compilation. Thanks Christopher

Zfs and b114 version
http://dlc.sun.com/osol/on/downloads/b114/ This URL makes me think that if I just sit down and figure out how to compile OpenSolaris, I can try b114 now^h^h^h eventually ? I am really eager to try out the new quota support.. has someone already tried compiling it perhaps? How complicated is compiling osol compared to, say, NetBSD/FreeBSD, Linux etc ? Xen/VMWare Server comparison and "best Xen practices"?
I'm wondering what others who have already used the Xen kernel for DomUs and the (free) VMWare Server can say about the comparison in actual day-to-day operation. I've only started playing with Xen on CentOS 5 and I've been running VMWare Server only on Win2k3 servers so far, so I'm missing direct comparibility. I find that VMWare is highly reliable and flexible, but needs a

best text editor for Linux?
Hi all, I know this question has been asked in the past, but I am wondering if anyone running R on Linux has any guidance as to a text editor that works well with R. At the present time I am running R on Windows and using TINN-R. For a number of reasons I want to switch to Linux, but can't find much in the way of a text editor in sync with R. Any experiences, recommendations would be

dom0 eth0:0, eth0:1, eth0:2 network setup alias ips
I''ve got 3 different sets of public ips, each with it''s own static ips, and default gateways, and only one physical ethernet port. I''d like to be able to setup domUs that use the various ips, and route through the gateway for that particular IP. My problem is that when I setup these ip addresses as alias on eth:0, only one set of ips/netmask/gateway will work. any

MV88SX6081 8-port SATA II PCI-X Controller (2) Intel Dual Port 1Gbit nics I have (5) 300GB disks in a Raidz1 with Zfs. offlining a slice in a raidz not allowed
I''ve a raidz1 made up of 2 partitions. One is on a disk which is failing and i want to replace it... cfgadm does not allow me to unconfigure it since ''device busy'', so i am trying to offline the slice from the raidz1 vdev but got this error: # zpool offline swap c3t2d0s0 cannot offline c3t2d0s0: no valid replicas given i have 2 partitions in this raidz1, i

Raid Edition drive with RAIDZ
Since ZFS already has error correction, would drives that limit the time a hard drive attempts to recover from errors such as WD RE drives or Seagate ES drive be necessary? Would it be safe to use standard hard drives without the Time Limited Error Recovery feature in a RAIDZ array? This message posted from opensolaris.org

borrow disk from raidz?
Hi all! I got a short question regarding data migration: I want to copy my data (~2TB) from an old machine to a new machine with a new raidz1 (6 disks x 1,5TB each ). Unfortunately this is not working properly via network due to various (driver) problems on the old machine. So my idea was: to borrow one disk from the new raidz1 (leaving the raid in degraded, but working status) attach the now

Expanding a raidz vdev in zpool
Hello All, I have a zpool that consists of 2 raidz vdevs (raidz1-0 and raidz1-1). The first vdev is 4 1.5TB drives. The second was 4 500GB drives. I replaced the 4 500GB drives with 4 3TB drives. I replaced one at time, and resilvered each. Now the process is complete, I expected to have an extra 10TB (4*2.5TB) of raw space, but it''s still the same amount of space. I did an export and

ZFS mirror to RAIDz?
Hi all, I currently have four drives in my OpenSolaris box. The drives are split into two mirrors, one mirror containing my rpool (disks 1 & 2) and one containing other data (disks 2 & 3). I''m running out of space on my data mirror and am thinking of upgrading it to two 2TB disks. I then considered replacing disk 2 with a 2TB disk and making a RAIDz from the three new drives.

raidz question
Hi, I have E450 with 20 SCSI disks. 1 disk is used as a boot disk with critical filesystems like /, /usr, /var, etc. then othe 19 disks are configured with ZFS in raidz. Are there any significant performance implications of using raidz with such a large number of disks? Would there much to be gained in performance if I were to simply configure striping across those disks, instead of raidz? This

General question about ZFS and RAIDZ
Hello to the forum, with my general question about ZFS and RAIDZ I want the following to know: Must all harddisks for the storage pool have the same capacity or is it possible to use harddisks with different capacities? Many thanks for the answers. Best regards JueDan -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
