Google Gears with RoR
Has any one successfully used Google Gears with RoR to enable
''offline'' mode for their web application? Please share your thoughts/
experiences with using Google Gears or Dojo offline with RoR to move
your application offline. I''d be interested in enabling offline mode
(basically to download and store huge files locally) while I
manipulate them.
thanks!

Rails - where are the BIG web apps?
Ok, Rails has been out for some time now. I''ve kept an eye on it pretty
closely. I''ve heard Basecamp, Robot Coop, 43 Things, etc. are running
on it. However, those have been the same apps people point to when the
dreaded scalability question comes up. Are there any new web apps
(large scale) in Rails or is it still the same old one? Something like

High performance queries - RoR, PHP or something else?
Hi everyone,
I''m building an app in RoR that apart from the normal web interface
has a web service. This web service takes a parameter and uses that in
a single database query, and returns the result in a simple XML
format.
This web service needs to be quite fast as it will be used on all
pages of a quite big site with thousands of visitors every hour. I
don''t think caching is

Installing ROR/Webrick app on Windows 2000/2003 Server
Hi all,
I am currently not able to use search since it is disabled, so I will
ask my question and hope I am not repeating a past question.
I am looking into developing an app to run in Windows 2000/2003 Server
environment. To install ROR on a server to run an app on Webrick do I
need any extra steps beyond those needed to install on my development
laptop (XP prof) ?
The idea is to run the

Dovecot performance on GFS clustered filesystem
Hello All,
We are using Dovecot 1.1.3 to serve IMAP on a pair of clustered Postfix
servers which share a fiber array via the GFS clustered filesystem.
This all works very well for the most part, with the exception that
certain operations are so inefficient on GFS that they generate
significant I/O load and hurt performance. We are using the Maildir
format on disk. We're also using

ROR and MSSQL server.
Hello all.
I have just gotten the Agile development with ROR book and am
evaluating whether ROR would be suitable for our needs. After reading
some of the book I am thinking that ROR might not be able to handle
the GUID datatype as primary keys in SQL server. Specifically primary
keys in SQL server are created after the record is created and might
not be available to the activerecord unless the

Using ROR on Host Excellence web servers
I am just learning ROR. It is working fine on my Windows XP desktop.
Eventually I will want to migrate my ROR work to a host. Currently I
use Host Excellence. My account with them is a Windows account. They
run Apache servers. And have MySql.
I''ve queried them as to whether they support ROR. There answer was
"Unfortunately we don''t support Ruby on Rails on our servers. We

Need advice on RoR app design
Fellow Railers,
Is there anything, anywhere, that I can read that discusses overall RoR
app design? I have the Agile RoR book, which is great for learning the
details of RoR, but unfortunately doesn''t cover the overall issue of
creating a large, complex RoR app.
My staff and I are still in the process of getting up to speed on Ruby
and RoR, but we also need to begin thinking about

RoR go Live?
I am having a problem trying to use RoR live.
I have a Win XP SP1 OS,
Apache 2.0.55,
MySQL 5.0.15-nt
ruby 1.8.2,
rails 1.0.0,
gem 0.8.10,
WEBrick 1.3.1
Is it possible to run RoR using these components, live? Using an actual
domain name like www.joe.com/rails/app? Instead of using localhost:3000?
I would like to go live using either just Apache or Apache and WEBrick
for RoR.
I have an actual

ROR deployment on Apache - DocRoot set to /
I am trying to get a ROR app running on a linux box running Apache 1.3
at my hosting comapny, but cannot get it running.
There is a fresh/clean ROR app in the base directory /
.htaccess, dispatch.cgi, dispatch.fcgi and dispatch.rb are all in /
All dispatch files have been set to 755.
ROR docs say to point doc root at /public/ and to put .htaccess,
dispatch.cgi, dispatch.fcgi and dispatch.rb

Minimagick and RoR
Posting here is kind of a last resort: has anyone used Minimagick with
Ruby on Rails, and gotten it working correctly? I hate posting a "bug"
problem but I''m not if it''s *my* problem, or a problem with Imagemagick
and RoR 1.0, which I just installed (upgraded from 0.13.1).
Basically, when I try to run the most basic MM command in ROR:

RoR - Some Questions Before Starting
Hello everyone,
For some time I was studying Ruby on Rails, Active Record ideology and
other thing related with RoR right now I still know a lot more about
PHP than RoR. I am almost ready to start writing websites using RoR
and get more experience. But I still have some questions before
starting and I can''t start without answers.
If you could simply answer some of them, would be great.

Rails Documentation is RoR''s achilles heel
Hi All
Just a few minutes back I came across a post about autotest/zentest and that
post reignited the feeling I get when I look at RDoc, RoR documentation.
The main thing that is lacking in RoR and to some extent Ruby''s RDoc is
showing method names in HTML is not documentation. The arguments to method,
exception/errors raised by method, return value and a usage example
completes the

Ror has problems with memory usage??
I saw this on a forum for MODx (a CMS which seem very good, built on
standards, with clean XHTML/CSS, using PHP).
"RoR is a killer application, but is either a crusher when it comes to
memory usage or SQL usage. Even simple seeming things can kill a server
if it''s not dedicated to the application. In addition, RoR is much more
complex really than MODx if you''re not
