hot spare not so hot ??
I have configured a test system with a mirrored rpool and one hot spare. I
powered the systems off, pulled one of the disks from rpool to simulate a
hardware failure.
The hot spare is not activating automatically. Is there something more i
should have done to make this work ?

Zfs send takes 3 days for 1TB?
Can zfs send utilize multiple-streams of data transmission (or some sort
of multipleness)?
Interesting read for background

Is there any way to check if DTrace is running or a DTrace probe is enabled?
Hi,
I am adding DTrace probes within NFS v3 client. In my current
implementation, I use some tsd_*() functions and kmem_zalloc() function.
These functions might be heavy and affect the performance. I want to
call this function only when DTrace is running or the DTrace probes are
enable. So is there a way to check DTrace is running or DTrace probe is
enabled?

characterizing I/O on a per zvol basis.
Hey all -
Time for my silly question of the day, and before I bust out vi and
dtrace...
If there a simple, existing way I can observe the read / write / IOPS on
a per-zvol basis?
If not, is there interest in having one?
Cheers!
Nathan.

Get your SXCE on ZFS here!
With the release of the Nevada build 90 binaries, it is now possible to install SXCE directly onto a ZFS root filesystem, and also put ZFS swap onto a ZFS filesystem without worrying about having it deadlock. ZFS now also supports crash dumps!
To install SXCE to a ZFS root, simply use the text-based installer, after choosing "Solaris Express" from the boot menu on the DVD.

100% random writes coming out as 50/50 reads/writes
I''m running on s10s_u4wos_12b and doing the following test.
Create a pool, striped across 4 physical disks from a storage array.
Write a 100GB file to the filesystem (dd from /dev/zero out to the file).
Run I/O against that file, doing 100% random writes with an 8K block size.
zpool iostat shows the following...

mdb ::memstat including zfs buffer details?
Hey all -
Just a quick one...
Is there any plan to update the mdb ::memstat dcmd to present ZFS
buffers as part of the summary?
At present, we get something like:

CF to SATA adapters for boot device
Has anyone here had any luck using a CF to SATA adapter?
I''ve just tried an Addonics ADSACFW CF to SATA adaptor with an 8GB card that I wanted to use for a boot pool and even though the BIOS reports the disk, Solaris B95 (or the installer) doesn''t see it.
I might give the IDE version a go (I really wanted hoT-plug), otherwise I''ll be able to store a couple of thousand

The ZFS Read / Write roundabout
Hey all -
Was playing a little with zfs today and noticed that when I was
untarring a 2.5gb archive both from and onto the same spindle in my
laptop, I noticed that the bytes red and written over time was seesawing
between approximately 23MB/s and 0MB/s.
It seemed like we read and read and read till we were all full up, then
wrote until we were empty, and so the cycle went.
Now: as it happens,

zvol wrapped in a vmdk by Virtual Box and double writes?
Hi folks, (Long time no post...)
Only starting to get into this one, so apologies if I''m light on detail,
but...
I have a shiny SSD I''m using to help make some VirtualBox stuff I''m
doing go fast.
I have a 240GB Intel 520 series jobbie. Nice.
I chopped into a few slices - p0 (partition table), p1 128GB, p2 60gb.
As part of my work, I have used it both as a RAW

Can you provide some more details with respect to which libvirt version
you have installed. I know I've made changes in this space in more
recent versions (not the most recent). I'm no root_squash expert, but I
was the last to change things in the space so that

how to list and kill existing console sessions to VMs?
Hi everyone,
If a VM is configured to have a console attached to it, like using
http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementCharConsole
Libvirt offers access to VM serial console's using the virDomainOpenConsole API[1]
However, I didn't find a way to
1. list the existing connections to the console
2. kill an existing connection - without reconnecting using VIR_DOMAIN_CONSOLE_FORCE[2]

Xen 3.0.2-2 + linux-2.6-xen-fedora
Did anybody have success in setting up xen 3.0.2-2 with a newer kernel
than 2.6.16? I ran into the same LVM problems as mentioned before on
this list (not being able to lvremove a snapshot).
Now I''m trying to get the 2.6.18 running from the fedora repository (
http://hg.et.redhat.com/kernel/linux-2.6-xen-fedora ) but I didn''t have
any success so far. The xen hypervisor binary
