Preferred backup s/w
Hi all,
What is the current preferred method for backing up ZFS data pools,
preferably using free ($0.00) software, and assuming that access to
individual files (a la ufsbackup/ufsrestore) is required?
TIA,

Ways to speed up ''zpool import''?
We''re planning to build a ZFS-based Solaris NFS fileserver environment
with the backend storage being iSCSI-based, in part because of the
possibilities for failover. In exploring things in our test environment,
I have noticed that ''zpool import'' takes a fairly long time; about
35 to 45 seconds per pool. A pool import time this slow obviously
has implications for how fast

PHP probes
Hi all,
I remember at OSCON 2005 there was talk of adding DTrace probes
to PHP (in fact, I have a photo of Bryan and Wes working on it!).
Did they ever get into the upstream branch, ''cause I don''t recall
seeing a --enable-dtrace (or similar) configuration option when
I recently built PHP 5.2.1. If not, is there an ETA?
TIA,

Renaming a pool?
Hi all,
I have a pool called tank/home/foo and I want to rename it to
tank/home/bar. What''s the best way to do this (the zfs and
zpool man pages don''t have a "rename" option)?
One way I can think of is to create a clone of tank/home/foo
called tank/home/bar, and then destroy the former. Is that
the best (or even only) way?
TIA,

problem with smbios 2.13?
Hello,
I''m using the latest b75 ISO to try and get a solaris dom0 running on my
laptop, a Sony SZ-330P. The Xen LiveCD works just fine, so I know that
theoretically it should work. Build 75 also works just fine on my Sony,
including sound and video, etc.
But when I try and boot the Xen kernel, the system hangs. There''s no
panic printed to console. If I pass a -v option at

ZFS and Linux
Hello,
I believe that ZFS and it''s concepts is truly revolutionary to the
point that I no longer see any OS as modern if it does not have
comparable storage functionality. Therefore I think that file
system/disk manager with similar qualities should be written for Linux.
Does Sun have plans to dual license ZFS as GPL so it can be ported to
native Linux?
If not, is it legal to write

compression at zfs filesystem creation
Hi,
I just installed 2009.06 and found that compression isn''t enabled by default when filesystems are created. Does is make sense to have an RFE open for this? (I''ll open one tonight if need be.) We keep telling people to turn on compression. Are there any situations where turning on compression doesn''t make sense, like rpool/swap? what about rpool/dump?
Thanks,

do we support zonepath on UFS formated ZFS volume
Hi, ZFS experts,
From ZFS release notes, " Solaris 10 6/06 and Solaris 10 11/06: Do Not
Place the Root File
Systemof a Non-Global Zone on ZFS. The zonepath of a non-global zone
should not reside on
ZFS for this release. This action might result in patching problems and
possibly prevent the system
from being upgraded to a later Solaris 10 update release."
So my question is, do we

ZFS for Linux (NO LISCENCE talk, please)
Hello. I''m a nobody.
I use Linux. I have a hard-drive. I want the best / sexiest / what ever
fs for my hard-drive, as it isn''t one of those flashy flash drives,
which I presume don''t need an fs (???).
I was THRILLED that the ZFS for Linux thread started. And, I was equally
horrified (and sufficiently annoyed that I am starting this new thread) when
it degraded in to

ZFS questions
I will have a file system in a SAN using ZFS. Can someone answer my
questions?
1. Can I create ZFS volumes on a ZFS file system from one server,
attach the file system read-write to a different server (to load data),
then detach the file system from that server and attach the file system
read-only to multiple other servers?
2. Can I expand on the fly a ZFS volume within a file

Snapshots and backing store
Hi,
There''s something really bizarre in ZFS snaphot specs : "Uses no separate backing store." .
Hum...if I want to mutualize one physical volume somewhere in my SAN as THE snaphots backing-store...it becomes impossible to do ! Really bad.
Is there any chance to have a "backing-store-file" option in a future release ?
In the same idea, it would be great to

Not seeing other folders with some clients
Hi,
With dovecot 1.0.2, depending on the client I can only see inbox, or all
the folders. I see all the folders with pine and balsa, but can see only
the inbox with squirel mail and thunderbird. Any idea what's going on here
?
Thanks.
Yves.

External SATA drive enclosures + ZFS?
Hi all,
Space is starting to get a bit tight here, so I''m looking at adding
a couple of TB to my home server. I''m considering external USB or
FireWire attached drive enclosures. Cost is a real issue, but I also
want the data to be managed by ZFS--so enclosures without a JBOD option
have been disgarded (i.e., I don''t want to use any internal HW RAID
controllers).

I''m happy to inform that the ZFS file system is now part of the FreeBSD
operating system. ZFS is available in the HEAD branch and will be
available in FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE as an experimental feature.
Commit log:
Please welcome ZFS - The last word in file systems.

safe zfs-level snapshots with a UFS-on-ZVOL filesystem?
I had some trouble installing a zone on ZFS with S10u4
(bug in the postgres packages) that went away when I used a
ZVOL-backed UFS filesystem
for the zonepath.
I thought I''d push on with the experiment (in the hope Live Upgrade
would be able to upgrade such a zone).
It''s a bit unwieldy, but everything worked reasonably well -
performance isn''t much worse than straight

Get your SXCE on ZFS here!
With the release of the Nevada build 90 binaries, it is now possible to install SXCE directly onto a ZFS root filesystem, and also put ZFS swap onto a ZFS filesystem without worrying about having it deadlock. ZFS now also supports crash dumps!
To install SXCE to a ZFS root, simply use the text-based installer, after choosing "Solaris Express" from the boot menu on the DVD.

Multithreaded SAMBA/Winbind
Hi.
We have a configuration and audit application called Tripwire Enterprise
(7.5) that is running on a Red Enterprise Linux 5.2 server. On this
server, we are using winbind (samba version 3.0.33) for authentication
(against Windows AD). When we try to run a configuration check on users
and permissions we get an error that there is a problematic frame : C
[libnss_winbind.so.2+0x129f] . I
