Wildcard Subdomains & OS X Local Development
I''m using the simple account_location plugin to have virtual
subdomains on my app (account.myapp.com - see Basecamp, Blinksale,
etc.)
How do you go about setting up your OS X system to play nice? I''d like
to use Apache & Mongrel.
Notes: The only thing I''ve able to accomplish is hardcoding the
subdomains directly in my hosts file. I can get

Seeking Advice on Pattern for Multi-Organization Application
I am the developer of FreeMIS - an Open Source management information
system for schools. It currently holds the data for one school - so
different schools host different instances of FreeMIS.
I would like to expand the domain of a single instance of FreeMIS, so
that it covers all the schools in an education authority. THis will
enable me to implement authority-wide functionality.
Is there

I want to blog!
This isn''t Rails or Ruby related, but I just need some advice and
thought I''d ask the bright individuals here. I want to start my own
blog but I''m not sure where to begin. I don''t want to get a blogger
account because I want to have my own domain. Blogger also doesn''t
have many features. My hosting service is 1AND1 so it supports php,
cgi and mysql.

Problem launching Cursed mountain
Hello
I installed the game "Cursed Mountain", with no problems, at the end of the installation it asked for launching the game, and the game ran successfully. Later I wanted to launch it again, but now it gets stuck after the logo intro.
The terminal output is:

Displaying based on hostname/subdomain
Ive tried multiple ideas to get this to work, but keep hitting a dead
end. Has anyone done this before?
I want joe.domain.com to display www.domain.com/profile/joe
Im using lighttpd.
Routes dont have access to the URL string and therefore I cant code in
a conditional. lighttpd rewrite seems to really screw it all up. Is
there a feasible solution?
Thank you,

basecamp prefixes each url with a client name...
client1.updatelog.com/todos
client2.updatelog.com/milestones
any ideas on how this is done?
- one app?
- one app per client?
- one app per domain?

Differentiating between normal site content and accounts with subdomains
I''m using the subdomains as accounts method fine on a project, but
I''m wondering what is the best way to differentiate between account
subdomains to access the app using an account, and www.domain.com and
domain.com in order to show normal site content.
I''ve noticed that on Backpack, it seems that when you leave the
information pages and start using the app,

SSL and domain as account key
Say I have an hosted application which allows the user to use their own
domain name (company.com) to access it, and that application must be
accessed over SSL, how do you go about our SSL certificate not being
registered to their domain. Sure the connection will be safe but the
browser will pop up a warning saying the certificate is invalid for this
domain.
I dont think this problem occur

+ camping/session
Camping now comes with a sessioning class, checked in tonight.
To get sessions working for your application:
1. require ''camping/session''
2. include Camping::Session in your application''s toplevel module.
3. In your application''s create method, add a call to
Camping::Models::Schema.create_schema
4. Throughout your application, use the @state

Mocking/Stubbing help with subdomain as account key
My app uses account_location to set up subdomains as account keys. In
my controllers, all my model operations are scoped through the
@current_person object.
The question is: How do I test this with RSpec''s mocking and
stubbing? Basically, I need to test that @current_person.things is
getting the find message and returning @thing. I''ve tried stubbing
and mocking

Upgrading broke the .find methods???
I just updated to rails (via gem) and now all my .find..... methods
give me "wrong number of arguments(3 for 0)" with the exception of
find_by_sql which works fine but I want to avoid for obvious reasons.
I''ve tried simplifying everything down to the bare minimum
Priorities.find(1)
and I printed out Priority.table_name to confirm it was still correct.
What gives? Did I

Say we have 20k-50k users signed up for an email newsletter. Does
anyone have any data on how well ActionMailer does with mass emails?
How long would that take to send? Anything I should watch out for?

RSpec and the Basecamp API
I realise that this is kind of a basic question but I''m new to rspec and
still trying to work out how to do things. I''m working on a rails project
that requires basecamp integration via the api, which is fairly trivial to
use via the basecamp.rb wrapper:
Connection:
basecamp = Basecamp.new(APP_CONFIG[''api_host''], APP_CONFIG[''api_username''],

multi domain application
Hi,
I''m wondering how to handle an application we can access from multiple
domains and subdomains (such as basecamp)...
I think it has to do with a lighttpd or apache config and routes.rb
config with subdomain/domain auth?
thanks.

Simplest way to demonstrate a RoR app
Hi,
I have built a simple RoR application and would like to show it to some
friends.
I would like to assign a dyndns URI like "myapp.dyndns.org" address to
point to the application.
As the WEBrick/Mongrel servers are running in "localhost (so loopback
connections)" and I couldn''t bind them to the external server name or
couldn''t bind them to my IP

Rails Camp Scaling Session notes
Here are some notes from the scalability session of last week''s Rails
camp. They were entered by another session participant and are posted
at:
http://www.rubyonrailscamp.com/10%3A15%2Bsession%2B-%2Bscaling
The key points from my point of view:
- the Ruby VM is sketchy, rather like the Java VM around 1997
- the single threaded nature of Rails dispatch handling means we may
