VarCorr function for assigning random effects: was Question
If you are indeed using lme and not lmer then the needed function is VarCorr(). However, 2 recommendations. First, this is a busy list and better emails subject headers get better attention. Second, I would recommend using lmer as it is much faster. However, VarCorr seems to be incompatible with lmer and I do not know of another function to work with lmer. Hence, a better email subject header

Bug-report: Memdisk regression for XMGR DOS memory manager
For the boot floppy at http://superkeen.com/peacecorpsfiles/FUZOMA14.IMG using memdisk from syslinux version 3.72 boots correctly, but for memdisk versions newer than 3.72 (I tested 3.73, 3.75, 3.85, and 3.86) all hang at boot with the following message: Loading boot sector... booting FreeDOS kernel - SVN (build 2039 OEM:0xfd [compiled Oct 2 2009]) Kernel compatibility 6.22 - BORLANDC ... 3.73 crashes FreeDOS in VMWare - 3.72 works fine
With the same configuration an ISOLINUX CD which boots a FreeDOS Floppy image via MEMDISK Syslinux-3.73 crashes in VMWare and also on several newer boxes just after the kernel loading with "invalid OPCODE ...". Same CD with Syslinux-3.72 is working fine. Build environment for 3.72 was gcc-4.3.2 for 3.73 gcc-4.3.3 - any idea what can cause the troubles? --

partedmagic connecting to a comcast address
i have been noticing a short connection burst in system monitor every time i connect to internet. i got curious and decided to run wireshark to see what was happening. seems that i am connecting to 96.195.141.178 with destination of "PartedMagic". this seemed strange because i do not have PartedMagic installed, so i ran a 'whois' check. this is what it showed: IP Location

Confused about versions of R and Debian
I have recently acquired an Asus EEE PC which runs a version of Xandros which I believe to be a fork of Debian. I have been using R under various versions of Windows for some years but this is my first move into the world of Unix. I have installed Texlive from a CD and I have successfully added a UK-based repository and installed Texmaker. Now I would like to add R. There are dire warnings on
