I have removed the U3 software via the uninstall utility on the U3 website. The USB flash drive is on /dev/sdc I have tried this with syslinux 3.11 (from Ubuntu 7.04) and syslinux 3.36 (from Ubuntu Gutsy). I fdisked the drive and created a 750MB FAT16
