Cheet shet or overview of visibility between modal, views, and controllers ?
Where is an overview of who can see what and how ? session[] and params[] seem to be global, but what about instance variables of the controller? The views seem to be able to see (and modify) them. components seems to be able to set instance variables that their controllers can see; likewise partials can set values that the template and layout can see. I''m getting all the Rails

Clarification of how controllers and views work together...
Hi, So I''ve started mucking about with Merb. I''m doing some experimenting with some product ideas. Things are working out quite well, Merb is a pleasure to use. It seems very fast too. A couple of rough spots but that might be me, if they are still chaffing after a few more days I''ll mention them. One thing... I wrote a controller and a view with several

Visualizing puppet circular dependencies
I recently got a scary-looking circular dependency as a puppet error, and it took some thought to decipher it. Long story short, I fed it to graphviz, and the graph made it obvious where the problem was. Thought I''d share, in case others are having the same trouble. Code''s at http://gist.github.com/74566, and also pasted below for convenience. -- Philip # Make sense of

Partials shared between multiple controllers
(Just getting started w rails, web app dev for a long time...) I have some partials that are common across multiple controllers. They''re not universal, so they don''t belong to be part of these controllers'' layouts. It appears that I can put them at the root of /views/, and render them using a relative path, like so: <%= render :partial => "./footer"

Representing relationships between model objects
I''m a little stumped on how to approach the subject of representing relationships between a single model object. Basically, I want a User to be able to mark others as Friends, Contacts, etc. The caveat is that User A can mark User B as a Friend but that doesn''t mean User A is marked as a friend by User B. It can either be a one-way relationship or two-way relationship. Right

Relationships, relationships, relationships!
If I had my very own sweaty, wind-up Ballmer (http://www.ntk.net/ballmer/mirrors.html warning: mind-scarring video), that is what he would be saying: "Relationships, relationships, relationships!!" My unscientific polling of the traffic in #rubyonrails and here is that, second to deployment issues, this is the bigges FAQ for Rails: how to do relationship x in ActiveRecord. There seems

merging models/views with scaffolding
Allo, Just started playing around with RoR/scaffolding and have been impressed so far. However, it seems to create a 1:1 relationship between Controllers and Models and the basic CRUD actions -- I need to CRUD two models from the same views and actions. I have: Book model Book controller, with create/edit/show/destroy/list actions and the scaffold-gen''ed views. Category model Category

relationship between two discrete variables
I want to investigate possible relationships between two discrete variables. I have tried a few things but figured you guys might be able to point me at some purpose built functions. Our scientists score results of tests which are performed in lets say, 8 positions. The scores are assigned a value of 1,2,3 or 4. I want to know if there is a correlation between the test results and the

[LLVMdev] examine dominating relationships between basic blocks
I am building code which needs to examine dominating relationships between Basic Blocks. I searched the Programming Guide (http://llvm.org/docs/ProgrammersManual.html#common), it mentioned briefly that such details will be covered in the future. So, I am tuning to the list and ask. Say, I have BasicBlock * a, *b, and need to know whether a DOM b, (a DOMi b, a DOMp b, a PostDOM b), etc. How

Semantic relationships between shudown.stayoff, shutdown.return, and ups.start.auto
Nut-names.txt states that 1. ups.start.auto controls whether the UPS starts when mains is (re)applied. 2. shutdown.stayoff causes "turn off the load possibly after a delay and remain even if power returns". 3. shutdown.return causes "turn off the load possibly after a delay and return when power is back". 1 seems to conflict with 2 and 3. That is, 2

HABTM relationships and retrieving multiple selects in controller
Hello all, I have a product table and an option table that are connected to one another via a join table. These two tables both contain has_and_belong_to_many relationships with each other. I am trying to setup a page where I will create a product and add in its options. I have already populated the options table with data to draw from. so, to start, here is the method from my controller: def

Views in one controller reaching out to other controllers (best practices)
Hello all. For the purpose of my question, let''s imagine we''re building some search functionality. You''re a sales person (you poor sap). And you''re hanging out in the SalesCenterController. You need to do a search for available productions; you''ve decided to be cool and use Ajax. Do you... a) Make a remote call to an action in your current controller

Relationships between png resolution, axis.text$cex trellis setting, and paddings
Dear R-users, I was wondering if somebody could shed some light on the relationships existing between the resolution of a png device, the axis.text$cex trellis setting, and the paddings of the actual graph. In the following code, I create a custom trellis theme that set (among other thing) axis.text$cex to 1 instead of the default 0.8. Then a lattice graph is created and exported to three png

Rails Newb: Foreign Key Views?
I''m a total rails newbie, but I''m learning fast. I have a question that I can''t seem to find an answer for: What is the best way of coding views that represent foreign key relationships? For example, while developing, I''ve created an "articles" table. I create some scaffolding code and modify it all to look nice. I then realise, I need an

[clearview-discuss] visualizing devices, links, and interfaces
A revised illustration that incorporates Meem''s earlier recommendations has been posted on our project page: http://opensolaris.org/os/project/clearview/cv-linkif.gif Aside from showing the interrelationships between the devices, links, and interfaces, it also shows how vanity naming might be applied to the configuration. The illustration continues to be a work in progress

Modelling Relationships as objects
DHH in Rails Confeerence pointed out that abstract relationships should be converted into concrete objects, CRUDying up relationships. An example would be class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :subscriptions has_many :news_categories, :through => :subscriptions end class NewsCategory < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :subscriptions has_many :users, :through => :subscriptions

STI, controllers and views
Hello, I have set up that uses single table inheritance. I have a number of model subclasses following the example in AWDWR that uses Manager < Employee < Person. First question. Do I need to create controller classes for each? I don''t think I do because a single controller should be able to shunt the data between the models and the views. Second question. Say I have a view

Relationships between models.
Hi All, I think Im having a mental block here. For some reason I just cant get my head round relationships. What I have is the following. 4 tables 1) Hosts 2) Software 3) OperatingSystem 4) Company In my terms (which are most likely wrong) a company can have lots of hosts, a host has lots of software, a host has one operating system. So should my models have the following relations in them?

Trust Relationships using Samba
Like many, I administer multiple LANs connected together using NT trust relationships. This was implemented about 4 years ago. I now have the occasion to consider performing this same task again, but this time, I would like to implement it solely through samba - no Microsoft PDCs anywhere. I have read documentation on samba.org regarding NT-style trust relationships and am now wondering, can I
