How to detect whether running on VMware?
Does anyone know how a program, script or shell user can best determine
whether the machine is running on bare metal or is a VMware guest?
Cheers

Asterisk Debugging
I'd like to have Asterisk log useful messages during operation.
Is there any way in extensions.conf that I can manually log messages to a file, say via syslog()? The console output is ugly, with all the extra "Executing NoOp("SIP/pstn.voip.com-08a28bd0"," crud at the front of each line. I'm not sure how to save console output anyway.
Thanks,
Doug.

What is wrong with yum?
Hello,
in my CentOS-Base.repo file there is a line
baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/updates/$basearch
and yum update said 'nothing to do'. Then I change this line to
baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5.1/updates/i386 and yum
updates firefox, squid, sos and so on. That happens on two of my
computers, reproducible.
Does yum sometimes forget it's release

yum hangs when Reading Local RPMDB
All of a sudden yum hangs on a Centos 4.5 (updated to the latest patch
before 4.6) when I try to use it. "clean metadata" didn't help.
The output of -d5 shows it gets to the point of "Reading Local RPMDB" and
then sits there. The process doesn't die, but doesn't seem to do anything
from that point on. strace shows this: futex(0xb76dcae8, FUTEX_WAIT, 2,

Strange text on Asterisk console
I've just set up a new box with FC1+updates and the latest Stable
Asterisk from CVS.
Asterisk is started with the default safe_asterisk script with a
console on TTY9.
The coloured text on this console is made up of weird characters
instead of normal. Please see http://www.softins.co.uk/dsc00018.jpg
for an example.
If I do "asterisk -rvvvvv" on a normal login, either via the

Call Transfer Fails - Not a Valid Extension
We have a plain vanilla installation of AsteriskNOW using Digium D40/50 phones. All transfers are failing from any source to any extension with the message "that is not a valid extension". Does anyone have any ideas about where to begin looking for the source of that error?

Background asynchronous AGI
I have been writing a lot of AGI programs in C with good success.
I would like somehow to have an AGI program continue in the background
while the pbx execution returns to the dialplan and continues. Is this
possible? I was thinking that perhaps I could fork or create another
thread within the AGI prog.
The reason I want to do so is in order to monitor external information

ERROR during high volume MoH dialplan
Thanks for the feedback.
I do agree with having multiple smaller servers. When I was first approached with this task I mentioned as much. However, the current desire is to work with already existing hardware. That is out of my hands at the moment unless it just can't be done. I will explore Freeswitch a bit soon to compare it as well.

Channel Variable
Hi all,
Does anyone know how to get the channel ID on the other side of the
call?
For example: When SIP/50 calls SIP/21, and the call is answered by
SIP/21 I get:
SIP/21-6735 answered SIP/50-b456
${CHANNEL} will show me SIP/50-b456.
Is there a parameter or a workaround to get the SIP/21-6735 part?
Thanks.

No voice in MeetMe for SIP with AGI_BACKGROUND
Hello List,
I have seen from the following link that, for SIP channels there is no audio communication possible in MeetMe with AGI_BACKGROUND.
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+cmd+MeetMe
Currently we are using asterisk-1.6.2 and the problem still persists. Is there any solution available to overcome this problem? According to our requirement, we have to run an AGI script in MeetMe.
