text_field doesn''t call overridden ActiveRecord getters

In a template, I have

Here is the DateReceived method on my

Weird validation problem
I have a field called Fax in my model. I store it as a 10-digit number
with no other characters but I display it as a nicely formatted phone
number. I have a validation on it like this:
validates_format_of :Fax,
:message => ''number should be formatted using (XXX) XXX-XXXX'',
:with => /^\(\d{3}\)\ ?\d{3}-\d{4}$/
If I put 1234567890 (10 digits) in my field, the

Form validation - keepin correct fields displayed on refresh
All,
I''m finally doing my first real form in Rails - the model object that
I''m entering information for has 8 validations so far.
If I type in good values for all the fields but one, I get the pretty
validation, and the nice field highlighting, but all of the fields are
cleared, forcing me to retype all of that info. That is a big drag.
Is there a standard way to get the

checkboxes with a has_many :through relation
All,
I''m populating a view with checkboxes in a list. I want to be able to
assign to my has_many relationship using the post values of these
checkboxes. Essentially, I want to populate the relationship table
which will create the correct join values in my model.
Here is my check_box_tag code:
<%= check_box_tag("@current_job[target_list_ids][]",

Form helpers don''t work with facade columns?
Hello all,
I''ve been trying to use a facade column but I notice that the form
helpers don''t seem to respect the facade.
In the following example I''m trying to story the prices as Integer
values but present them to the user as decimals.
class Product < ActiveRecord::Base
def price=(new_price)
write_attribute(:price, Float(new_price)*100)
end
def price

Getters and setters problem?
Hi list,
first evening of playing with rails, so please forgive me if I ask
something stupid. ;-)
I created a User model and tried to use ActiveRecord callbacks to
convert the password to sha1 just before saving it. For some reason
postgresql gives me a error because the given password is null. To
test even further I tried to change :login too, same error happens,
:login is empty too.
I am sure

Formatting values of numbers using text_field
Anyone have a quick solution on how to format a number in a text_field
tag?
<% text_field "price", "amount" %> returns 100.0 and it would be nice
if it showed 100.00
Of course, number_with_precision works nicely, but how do you make that
work with text_field?
I thought maybe overriding the getter in the model. However, this means
I would have to bring the helper

Make AR setter methods private?
Hi,
I have a AR model that I want to limit changes to be only via instance
methods that I''ve added.
How do I prevent my other sw from setting the instance''s attributes?
I know about #attr_protected and #attr_readonly. But the first leaves
the individual setters as they were and the second stops all changes.
I want something like "attr_private"
Thoughts?
Thanks,

ERb question: Embedding <%= %> in helper method calls
I had a situation where I wanted to use a <%= %> (scriptlet) in my
text_field call to set the "disabled" attribute on the text field, like
so:
<%= text_field(:current_job, ''removeLinkPos'', :value => '''', :id =>
''offset'', :maxlength => 2, :disabled => <%= sometest ? ''true'' :

Understanding date_select naming conventions
I am using the date_select helper to generate date select elements in a
form.
I notice that the generated HTML shows that these selects have the
following names:
Month: current_job[StartDate(2i)]
Day: current_job[StartDate(3i)]
Year: current_job[StartDate(1i)]
I''m assuming that the Xi identifiers somehow specify the appropriate
date part from a date or time value.
Can anyone

[LLVMdev] Opaque type usage to represent foreign types
In my project I have a group of foreign types (C++ classes) that I
want to use, but don't want to represent as structs within LLVM. For
example, for each field in each C++ class I have a setter and getter
function that I'd like to use. The setters and getters are "extern C"
functions to avoid problems with C++'s name mangling.
After going over the documentation it

mattr_accessor inside a class
Rails extends Ruby with mattr_accessor (Module accessor). As Ruby''s
attr_accessor generates getter/setter methods for instances,
mattr_accessor provide getter/setter methods at the module level. In
below example, you see that mattr_accessor declared in the class
context of LookupContext. It''s declared in class, not module. However,
modules are defined in LookupContext, for

write attribute coming from where?
There are datatypes that need to be converted back and forth from a
string representation: they need to be parsed both coming from the
database, and coming from elsewhere like views.
Dates are an example, and I recently needed to implement a more
forgiving converter for decimal numbers. So we have here at least two
flows of execution, for example:
post.date = "22-jan-2007"

Problem with instance variables
Im developing a User model for my application (newbie stuff, but I have
to start somewhere). I followed the tutorial at
http://sonjayatandon.com/05-2006/how-to-build-a-secured-web-application-with-ruby-on-rails/
and decided to add an email field. The problem is that the email is not
being saved on the database and I end up with two email variables:
@email and email.

Refreshing RHTML page with previously posted data?
All,
After a POST, I want to be able to redisplay a view with the data that
was previously entered when my controller action notices a validation
failure and calls render on the view that does the submit.
Example:
View x.rhtml - text field is filled in
Call controller action
Controller action fails validation calls render (:action => ''x'')
x.rthml shows up with blank text
