Odd issue with custom udev rule at boot
Hi All,
I've written a custom udev rule to change the permissions of /dev/ttyS* but it doesn't seem to be working at boot up. If I run
/sbin/udevcontrol reload_rules; udevtrigger
The rules are parsed, applied and the permissions are then correct but why is it not doing so at boot? The file in questions I've called /etc/udev/rules.d/49-udev-override.rules and it contains

Good Programming Practice Question - Functions in Different Files
I've gotten to the point wih an R script where I would like to encapsulate several blocks of codes in R functions.
In order to keep the top level script simple I would like to put them in a separate file. This should help the readability of the top level main script.
Is source(...) the best way to load those functions in the top level script?
For example, in the top level script

Book Recommendation
Stephen, I see lots of answers with packages and resources, but not
book recommendations. I have used Introduction to Data Technologies
by Paul Murrell (https://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~paul/ItDT/) to teach
SQL and database design and would recommend looking at it as a
possibility.

recommneded tape drives
Hi there, I am pricing out a dell 840 (low end file server) that will
run latest centos.
Can anyone recommend a good tape drive/card combo with centos? The
drives (to be backed up) in it will be a raid 0 - 500gb.
Thanks in advance!

can some people point to me to good tape backup and software...
Hi all,
Being recently new to Samba. I want to know what some of
you consider a really good tape backup. And, what software to run
it with. I want to be able to offer customers daily full backups that
the restores will work well with Samba. My understanding is
smbtar only uses tar. Is there something even web based I can
use. (for the guy just getting out to new small networks..and not to

OCFS and backups to tape
Hi,
we have installed ocfs2 on Rhat 4. It is being used as a general
clustered file system. There are no oracle binaries or datafiles on the
ocfs volume. So no need for RMAN or oarcle agents etc etc.
The customer would like to backup the volume using arcserve. However CA
are saying that they cannot backup from an ocfs volume.
Has anyone out there got any words of wisdom about backing up

Fw: Error attaching tape drive device to KVM guest
A quick follow-up in case anyone else is trying to use IBM tape device
within a KVM guest. I didn't get SCSI passthrough below working, but
there were two alternatives recommended to me:
(1) Use PCI passthrough to give the KVM guest dedicated access to the
Fibre Channel HBA PCI card. PCI passthrough seems to be more solid.
(2) Use ISCSI to share the tape devices and tape changer

scsi tape device support
I'm trying to get a scsi tape device (Sony SDX-D500V) working on my dell
2450 running centos 4.2. I can see the device (ch1, id2) using the dell bois
raid utility, but once booted into linux I can't see any mention of it in
the logs or dmesg.
Do you know if the generic kernel (2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp) supports this tape
device? Can anyone give me any pointers in getting this device working.

star --> tape
I just got an error using star to send an archive to tape. I know the
tape works--I tested it with gnu tar yesterday. But when trying
find /home -mount -depth -type f | star -c list=- -z f=/dev/st0
I got the error:
star: can only copy files
When I wrote to the tape with tar yesterday,
tar -zcvf /dev/st0 /home/matt
worked fine. And that star command works when the output destination

howto mount a scsi tape drive?
Hi,
after installing centos 4.2 I've noticed that my internal Seagate scsi DAT
72GB tape drive hasn't been recognised in /media or doesn't show up in gnome
when putting in a tape.
Do I need to edit fstab first or load additional modules in the kernel
during startup?
regards, Geert

Tape backup question.
Hello,
I want to backup my PE2800 on tape but I'm not sure how to do this.
My PE2800 has a RAID5 setup with 2 72GB SCSI disks and a Seagate DAT-2 72GB
internal tape-streamer and I'm running Centos 4.3 with the latest yum
updates.
I'm not sure if this tape-streamer is recognised by the OS properly because
it doesn't show up along with my DVD/floppy
I also recieved with the

Tape Drive and Bacula issue
I posted this in the Bacula list without success so I hope I might have some luck here. Btape and mt can access my DDS-3 Seagate Archive Python 06480-xxx tape drive but Bacula tray-mon ends up finally stating that it cannot open device /dev/nst0? That is the device string that I use to access the drive, oddly enough it also suggest the SD could not open the one file based storage location I have

Command to get tape capacity status?
I have an Overland tape library connected, via SCSI card, to an
out-of-box, full install of C5 install on an old PC.
I have a script that uses tar to archive data to tape and mtx to change
tapes. What I don't know, if possible, is to obtain the status of how
much tape is left in the drive. If I get a write failure, I'd like to
know if the tape is bad or has run out of space.
