[Bridge] Questions about MSTP support.
Hi all. I need to use STP (ideally MST) on centos 6.3. I've read that it's supported in linux kernel as part of IEEE 802.1Q standard, but can't find any information on configuring miltiple spanning trees. So - help? suggestions? rtfm (as long as you point me to actual manual)? anything? Thank you, - V

iSCSI best practices
Hey folks, I had some general questions and when reading through the list archives I came across an iSCSI discussion back in February where a couple of individuals were going back and forth about drafting up a "best practices" doc and putting it into a wiki. Did that ever happen? And if so, where is it? Now my questions : We are not using iSCIS yet at work but I see a few places

[RFC] [PATCH] Mode=Switch: add per-VLAN forwarding database
Hi, thanks for the feedback. > This is an interesting problem. I wonder how you would solve it if you > would have a real (managed) switch instead of tinc to connect the > access points and bridge nodes together? in the backbone we have HP ProCurve switches and all of them (except for the oldest series from more than 10 years ago) separate their forwarding database per vlan. network redundancy via two nics, two routers?
Hi List, I'm trying to configure two switches to provide redundancy (i.e. in case one switch goes down), and am wondering if there is a standard way to configure a CentOS box to use different gateways in a bonded interface, depending upon which physical nic is being used? A bit more detail might help answer the "And why do you want to do that?" questions... - Switch 1,

Polycom IP 330 w/VLAN?
Hi, all. I see that the Polycom SoundPoint IP 330 supports VLAN... but I don't quite see how that works. Do you point a non-VLAN'd segment at it (akin to when you uplink a VLAN_enabled switch), and have the phone implement the VLAN? Or...? *puzzled* Thanks much, -Ken

[RFC] [PATCH] Mode=Switch: add per-VLAN forwarding database
Hi, I'm inter-connecting AccessPoints using a tinc mesh and have bridge-nodes to bridge this vpn into some existing backbone. The AccessPoints bridge their users into 802.1q VLANs (per WiFi-Client, there can be multiple VLANs active on each AP) in the tinc mesh, and the bridge nodes bridge some vlans into the backbone. Now there is a router in the backbone that uses the same MAC on all VLANs,

Recommendations for QoS, PoE Switches
Hi all, For a top quality setup, I will need to install high quality VoIP switches with QoS and PoE. My potential customer should not have any problem with call quality. Experienced folks, Please advice me what switches to install and at what price. I may need it for upto 100 phones. What else should I consider so that phones work without problem along with the computers on the same network?

[OT] switches
Pardon, this might be off-topic. I'm reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch For a setup of ~5 agents, would I be wrong in thinking that a generic 16 port unmanaged switch would fit the bill? The first model to come up for me in an Amazon search is: http://support.netgear.com/product/fs116 Is this a reasonable choice? Would I be wrong in thinking that most any Fast

[Bridge] Question about VLANs, bridges and switches
I have a question about bridges, vlans and switches. We had been using a bridge to provide filtering between our student labs and the main network. All the filtering does is check that a known IP matches a known MAC address, this stops students plugging in laptops and stealing an IP address. (And yes, we know about the MAC spoofing issues too) The connection was nice and simple,

[OT] Rails hosting question -- video centric
This is OT in the sense that it''s yet another hosting question and not strictly a problem I''m having with Rails. Basically, I trust and appreciate the knowledge of the folks on this list so I''m hoping for some insight. I have a new project that I''ll be starting up soon. It''s basically going to feed videos. The webapp piece is trivial. I''m

I''m trying to implement simple untagged vlans on our switch and have misconfigured something.. ISP gw is on the default vlan1 (untagged) Router eth1 is setup on the switch with default vlan1 and member of vlan4. eth0 is default vlan4 which connects to the clients that are all default members of vlan4 eth0 is x.x.x.86/28 This is what clients are connecting to as their gw.. Problem with VLANs on tg3 NICs
I have 3 machines, T60 thinkpad with e1000 NIC Dell PowerEdge 2950 with bnx2 NIC HP DL360 G4P with tg3 NIC All running xen 3.03 / 2.6.16.29-xen I have a netbootable image with 2.6.16.29-xenU. This image when it boots creates a vlan eth0.4002, and then tries to communicate on that interface to a central server. On the machines with e1000 an bnx2 NICs, this works fine. On the

MCI vs. XO/Allegiance
Hello All, Anyone out there using ISDN PRI from either MCI or XO/Allegiance? Gotta make the choice today and the difference per month is only about $25 in favor of MCI. Billing is pretty much the same between the two so I have pretty much no point of reference on which to choose. Any thoughts from anyone experienced with these two compnies would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Wiley

VoIP PoE phones for restaurant
Greetings, I mailed the list regarding an intercom system some months ago and we came to the conclusion that I should purchase a Polycom 501 phone. I'm now considering the purchase for this year, and I'm now wondering between the Polycom 501 and the 320 for the intercom. I don't need the spare ethernet on the phone because I would like to have my voice network separate from my

Problems with crashing IBM X3630 M3/ZFS
Hello. I've got a quartet of IBM x3630 M3 with one that is frequently hard locking under heavy NFS load. I am running 9.0-RELEASE with all the patches from freebsd-update. My problem machine has 8 16 core clients, each doing IO intensive tasks connected to it via a Procurve and the onboard igb0 interface. Mostly network reads, typically 10MB read per MB written. When the machine locks

[Bridge] VLAN translation + PVST+
Hello, I am creating a configuration where a Redhat server running bridge-tools 0.9.5 will be bridging between different VLANs on the same physical interface (for example: a bridge consisting of eth1.100 and eth1.110). This physical interface is being connected to modern Cisco switches running PVST+. The Cisco switch does not like this configuration as the tags on its BPDUs are being changed

ether-wake
Some switch hardware can generate the packets directly, negating the need for a box on every VLAN. Meraki hardware can do it, but you have to go through the dashboard so automating it isn't currently possible. Here is some documentation on forwarding WoL on catalyst 3750 switches from Cisco:

[OT] switches
If your phones support PoE, I have had huge success with Zyxel: http://www.amazon.com/ZyXEL-ES1100-16P-16-Port-Ethernet-Unmanaged/dp/B00 5GRETMM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1426296572&sr=8-3&keywords=zyxel+poe If you want to go even cheaper, I have successfully used these as well: http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-8-Port-100Mbps-Switch-TPE-S44/dp/B000QYEN
