ext4 on 5.3
grabbed my DVD and did an install. When partitioning the disk I did not see
a selection for ext4.
Is this enabled after the fact some how?

ext4 in 5.3
Hi guys - I'm really looking forward to 5.3 for the potential of ext4.
I am moving/copying image files lately 8G file and it is slow. I am
hoping that ext4 really speeds that up.
My question is: will we be able to boot ext4 file systems?
Will the boot partition still be ext3 and then have to mount the ext4
filesystem?
I did not see mention of it in the release notes.
Thanks,
Jerry

ext4 in centos 5.3
Hi,
Recently I build a filesystem in a device using mkfs.ext4 but when I
tried to mount the device show this error:
??? mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'
But when I build the same device with mkfs.ext4dev I can mont the
device without problem.
My doubt is when Centos 5.4 is released if I will have a problem
because the partition is ext4dev.
Thanks,

EXT4 status for centos 5.3
Hi,
I was wondering what is the current status fro ext4 support in Centos. I've
noticed that is marked as dev when I try to use it from the installer.
Does anybody have a scary story to prevent using it?

[PATCH] fstype: Fix ext4/ext4dev probing
Enhance fstype so it properly takes into account whether or not the
ext4 and/or ext4dev filesystems are present, and properly handles the
test_fs flag. The old code also has some really buggy checks --- for
example, where it compared the set of supported ro_compat features
against the incompat feature bitmask:
(sb->s_feature_incompat & __cpu_to_le32(EXT3_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_SUPP)

installing 5.3 with 512M ram really slow
I was installing centos 5.3 x86_64 on a sempron 2.7G machine with
512M ram. The install started off fine then REALLY SLOWED down
about 70% into install. I did have a swap space. after that it just crawled.
I tried restart the install a couple times at 512M. Same thing around 70%
the slow down.
I then put in 1G of RAM and everything zipped on past and finished fine.

unofficial ext3 and ext4 compare
I have something like 300G I routinely backup.
This includes some large 12Gig images and other files.
I had been using ext3 on an external USB disk for part of the process.
Under ext3 doing "rsync -a /home /mnt/external_back/backup.jun.27.2011"
it took 200 minutes.
I took the same computer, same external HD and reformatted it for ext4
(mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdd1).
I then started the same

ext4 not on a bootable partition
Just tried running a configuration on 5.6 with ext4 as the "/"
partitition. I got the error
that cannot boot ext4 partition. bummer.... I know this is just a boot
issue and make the ext3 but I was disappointed.
Maybe 6.0 will have ext4 bootable.

re-install package
I tried to install alsa 1.0.19 on centos 5.3 64 - did not work - compile

I need to re-install alsa-lib and alsa-util .
I dont want to do rpm -e first on those packages as dependcy is crazy.
I know they were installed (rpm -qa | grep alsa tells me so) I just want
to re-install ?
How do I do that?
Thanks,

ext4?
Listee's...
I have a 5.5 box and I have formatted a partition as ext4 however I
can't mount it, the mount command is telling me its an unknown file
system type. fsck tells me the partition is a clean ext4 partition but
I can't mount it.
Some reasearch has lead me to believe the problem is that ext4 isn't
enabled in the kernel by default in 5.5 (this was originally a 5.2 box

installing updates in post kickstart
I can do a yum update in my post kickstart (which is what I am doing now
actually).
However, I want to save network time at installations.
If I copy down the files from centos/5.3/updates/x86_64/RPMS
and place them in a directory local on my network,
can I just "rpm -U /mnt/directory/updates/x86_64/RPMS*"
in my post section?
Assuming I have nfs mounted the directory of course...

EXT4 root fails for kickstart
Hi All,
For those testing EXT4 I seem to have found an issue with anaconda where
by if you specify EXT4 fstype in your kickstart file it will not install
and complains that if needs another 250MB of disk space. I've tried with
my kickstart set for 10G for root at ext3 and it works fine. 10,15 and
20GB with EXT4 all fail.
BTW: can't put /boot on it either.
Just a heads up for all.

dialog boxes on X
All,
I have been looking at zenity to pop up messages on the X screen.
Is there another alternative to zenity that I have not found?
I need to be able to completely remove the OK button, I cannot find a
way in zenity to do this.
also It would be nice to have a --timeout 5 option on the command line also.
Any suggestions?

migrate ext3 to ext4
Hi all,
I issued the commands on a single disk system:
with two partitions / is linux sda1 and /home is sda3
yum -y update
yum -y install e4fsprogs
reboot
umount /home
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/sda3
e2fsck -yfDC0 /dev/sda3
That worked just fine.
I then had a different system that is software raid.
where / is linux and md0 and /home is md1
yum -y update
yum -y

display pop up message on X
Is there a method to display pop up messages on X display?
I found xmessage, however I was hoping for something a little more
flexible. like being able to tell xmessage to display a file (typically
one line in the file).
then send it a signal to tell it to re-read the file and show the new data.
Sure I can kill it and re-show it but that isnt very nice...
Is there something available in centos
