DHCP and DomUs: not working
I''m trying to get DHCP working with DomU clients. I don''t want to use libvirtd. There''s a dhcpd on the machine and it works fine for all clients in the network, but not for DomUs. If I set a static IP on the DomU all networking for them is fine, so there''s no general networking problem. I use the xen 3.2 packages for CentOS on CentOS 5.1. There was a public

After BIND update owner changed and restart failed
I just applied the BIND updates. Then I fixed the one file that had a second include of named.ca (remembered that from last time) and did a 'service named restart', and it failed. In messages I found: Jan 10 21:31:17 z9m9z named[31001]: loading configuration from '/etc/named.conf' Jan 10 21:31:17 z9m9z named[31001]: /etc/named.conf:11: open: /etc/named.acl: permission denied

How to generate UUID for Xen?
The new virtual machine manager in Centos 5.1 displays some weird behavior here and I assume it's because the UUID of one running VM is the same as of a VM that is shut down. I used the same config file template for creating all my test VMs, so several have the same UUID. Didn't produce any problems with xm. But the new VM manager in Gnome shows active and inactive VMs and identifies

firewall best practice on dom-0
I took over a custom firewall script from my older Suse machines to my Dom-Us and it works just fine. Doing the same for Dom-0 immediately killed all traffic for the VMs. As there was no need before I had been dropping everything on the FORWARD chain. After ACCEPTing all for FORWARD my VMs are happy again. What's best practice on Dom-0, what do you do? Can I restrict the forwarding, in

DHCP for Xen VMs
I created my first Xen VM that didn't use a static IP address. It grabs an IP from the 198.168.122.0 subnet (from I don't know where). I would rather want it to use my DHCP server. How can I achieve this? Kai -- Kai Sch?tzl, Berlin, Germany Get your web at Conactive Internet Services: http://www.conactive.com

Problem with local base repo
Last night my rsync got some 'new' files for the base repo and new repodata. This morning, I set a server to upgrade from 5 to 5.1 by setting it to access my local base and updates repos. I got the following error: Resolving Dependencies --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Please wait. ---> Downloading header for openssh-clients to pack into transaction set.

DNS resolver over IPv6
I have a Centos server that is running BIND and has IPv6 global addresses. I have entered a number of AAAA records into this copy of BIND in a local view and zone (tld is htt). Over IPv4, I have no trouble with nslookup ('nslookup - 127.0.0.1' and 'nslookup - 192.168.128.55'). I get the AAAA records back. But if I try to use the IPv6 address of the system I get a time out.

yum udpate not getting new kernel
On one notebook (so far), I have not picked up the new kernel: kernel-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.i686.rpm I have gotten it on some notebooks. So far the only difference I can see between the systems that MIGHT matter is those that got the update were new installs and had not reached 3 installed kernels. The one that failed already had 3 kernels in /boot. But I seem to recall this was about how

Centos 5.2 upgrade - urlopen error unknown url type: media
My first notebook upgrade: I repaired my old HP nc4010 (bought a new hinge on ebay) and realized this was the perfect way to test out the upgrade to 5.2 before doing it on my production notebook. First I updated to 'current' 5.1 (by current I mean I have not synced my 5.1 local repo since building my 5.2 repo). I had not used my nc4010 for a while and the kernel was at

Windows XP fixmbr from Centos?
I am still dead on my corporate system, and the XP boot CD I brought won't boot. And so far I have not found anyone here at the IETF meeting that happens to have one in their bag of tricks... So I found instructions on doing this in Ubuntu: http://www.arsgeek.com/2008/01/15/how-to-fix-your-windows-mbr-with-an-ubuntu-livecd/ I have my Centos install CD 1 of 6 that gets me into rescue.

sendmail and cups gets installed although not chosen in kickstart file
I setup a kickstart file that contains only @core and several packages explicitely listed. postfix is listed, sendmail is not. And there's no package where I would think it needs cups. Nevertheless, after the install I now have postfix *and* sendmail on the machine and sendmail even being enabled. And cups is installed. How can I find out what forced them (and probably many other unwanted

Can't yum erase/install an app
I am switching the box that I did the HIPL rpm builds over to running from rpms built directly by the HIPL team (http://infrahip.hiit.fi/hipl/release/1.0.4/). I did the 'make uninstall' and then 'yum install hipl-all', but the hipl-firewall rpm did not install. Seems like I have a mess on my system with the various hipfw files. I 'manually' deleted a bunch of them

following Centos wiki headless install, but applying to FC10
I have successfully built an install CD following the instructions at: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/VncHeadlessInstall Now I am trying to do the same with FC10 and I am failing in two ways. I have tried to find a similar howto for even FC9, but have not found the right google magic. The first problem should be small. When I set isolinux.cfg to start with: prompt 1 timeout 0 I

Checking fan state
I just replaced my fan in my nc2400. It was a 5hour job. Had to pull EVERYTHING to get to where they have the fan in the thing. Now I want to know if it is working. It is suppose to be thermostatically controlled, and it takes time to heat up. So how can I find out what Centos knows about the system temp and fan state? It was hard to tell if I put the connector in the right way. At least

network connectivity lost after reboot/upgrade
I upgraded one of my old machines running 5.x to the latest kernel (from 308.24.1 to 348.1.1). After rebooting network connectivity was gone. I rebooted with the old kernel, I also tried the one before it (308.20.1) still no luck. So I assume it's got nothing to do with the kernel or even CentOS. But a hardware failure seems also unlikely, see below. ethtool shows the link as up and if I

Big devices and missing space
Hello, I have a Promise EX 12-port RAID controller in my box, connected to 8 750GB disks. I have set up 2 RAID-5 devices and joined these using LVM. This is working fine. However, there is something that seems wrong.. (4-1) * 750 = 2250, but df reports the LVM volume as a mere 4.0T; /dev/mapper/storage_volume-stor 4.0T 3.6T 507G 88% /storage Shouldn't this be 4.5TB? Set hostname via DHCP ?
Hi. I just setup one of my machines as a DHCP server. I'd like it to handle the hostnames of clients. Don't know if this is an orthodox thing to do (feel free to add your comments :oD). Here's the server's relevant lines of dhcpd.conf: --8<------- ... # Envoyer les noms d'h?tes aux clients use-host-decl-names on; # Adresses statiques host babasse { hardware ethernet

Mixed dom0/domU usage?
Hi, I'm wondering about the impact of using both dom0 and domU's on a server at the same time. I'm worried about the performance impact of running a Mysql server in a domU and now I'm thinking about moving the Mysql part of a LAMP setup into dom0 and running a few Apache guests as domUs. Since the Apaches will serve mostly from an NFS share they won't have much impact on

I need to create it? If yes,

CentOS 4.6 - dhcp issue
Hi - On my CentOS 4 cobbler server i am having some odd dhcp issues. There is only 1 dhcp server on the network and the cobbler box manages the dhcp. When i kick off the PXE install during the PXE phase things seem OK then when anaconda tried to get an IP sometimes things work out fine and other times it sits waiting for hostname/domainname. From the logs you can see that the mac requesting
