OT: Need some riser card advice...
Fellow server-builders out there, this is for you. :) I was trying to
build a cheap JBOD type storage solution running CentOS. Ended up
snagging a Supermicro SC826TQ-R800LPB 2U case (12 drives slots) and a
Supermicro X7DBE-O motherboard. Unfortunately, without thinking I
snagged a 3ware 9650SE-12ML SATA RAID card which is a full height card
and thus does not fit in my case.
I have a few

OT: hardware question
Hi, folks,
I'm installing a RAID controller card for a large external RAID box in
a Dell server. I've got two riser slots available. Here's the question:
the controller card has some large chips on one side, and if I put it
in riser 1, those chips face downwards in the box, blocking ease of
cooling, while if I put it in riser 2, the chips will face up... but be
right over a large

A400P + Intel D201GLY2(A) motherboard?
Hello
I'd like to build myself an Asterisk server for SOHO use. Intel's
D201GLY2 motherboard (http://tinyurl.com/ddarzp) looks like a very
good deal, but I'm concerned about two things:
1. Will an A400P (from OpenVox, but supposed to be Digium-compatible
http://tinyurl.com/ck6nfu) fit with a PCI riser, or will the CPU
heatsink/fan be in the way? I downloaded the PDF from

TDM400p susceptible to EMI?
I have a TDM400p with 3 fxs and 1 fxo daughter cards.
It's in a mini-itx case with a 'right-angle' PCI riser card so the TDM400p
is 'sandwiched' between the Atom D525 CPU and the 2.5" hard drive.
I'm getting a bunch of clicks and pops on all ports.
Has anybody had a similar experience? Did you find a solution?

flashing a BIOS on an HP server
Hi, folks,
Since I've gotten a total of one response in days on the HP forum,
maybe the collective mind here has an answer.... As I've mentioned in
other posts, we have an HP dl580 g5 that started throwing ECC errors.
But wait, it's worse: memory is mirrored.... And the thing is fully
populated with 32 DIMMs.
I took my best guess, pulled the matching set of DIMMs, and took two

[FreeBSD] Fix for ServerWorks HT1000 in upcoming 7.1?
Hi,
I have a server (Dell PowerEdge SC1435, ServerWorks HT1000) on which
I'd like to try installing FreeBSD. I've already failed to make 7.0
work on this box and was wondering if you have information about the
behavior of the upcoming 7.1 on this hardware.
I've been following the "HT1000 chipset errata saga" thread, and the
commits by sos@ to CVS (around Jan 2008), but have

Just to drag this thread on a bit further ...
I've been looking into these little boxes, thinking I could use one as a
firewall/gateway. My one requirement is that it would need to have two
PCI slots (one can be low-profile), and although I've seen PCI riser
cards that can give me two slots, they've been rare, and cases that are
suitable (i.e have the space, and back panels are

Compact, fanless appliance?
Hello
For those SOHO customers (ie. at most, a couple of POTS/ISDN
connections and simultaneous SIP calls) who'd rather not use a big,
noisy PC to run Asterisk, I'd like to offer an alternative that has
the following features:
- not old hardware sold on eBay, ie. it must be up-to-date hardware
sold by a company currently in business
- compact, silent
- has room for a 2.5" hard-disk,

Hi,
I'm looking for IBM hardware to support:
100 SIP hard phone users
10 fax machines on SIP ata's
maybe later an additional 100 sip soft phones.
Initially, all calls will be through PRI.
Some conferencing. Don't know yet if this will even get used.
Using 1.4 + ( probably business edition )
I'm looking for anyone who some experience / gotchas. I've google'd and

Slightly OT: PCIe x16 card in x8 slot
So, in the ongoing saga of the unusual 1U short-depth
workstation, we have narrowed the field to two choices.
Both entrants are configured with 16GB memory (4x4GB),
two 2.5" drives (1x250GB SSD and 1x1TB HDD),
and an NVIDIA NVS510 graphic card (quad display):
1) SuperMicro 5017R-MF, Xeon E5-2609 processor
2) SuperMicro 5017C-LF, Xeon E3-1220 processor

Problems using TE412P and TDM400B in a IBM x3650
Another day, another apparant unexplained hardware incompatibility.
I have a TE412P and a TDM400B living quite happily in a whitebox using an
Intel motherboard:
http://www.intel.com/design/servers/boards/se7230nh1-e/index.htm
I tried to move to an IBM x3650 system. It uses a slightly newer chipset,
but apparantly it's in the same family. The SE-7230 board has been EOL'd

Hello list,
I have a customer who is interested in standardizing on dell servers for
asterisk deployments.
Has anyone had success with a particular configuration?
Anything specifically to watch out for?

DIMM problem
Hey, folks,
I've got an HP Proliant DL580 G5 throwing ECC errors. This is annoying,
since a) it's all new as of a few months ago, and b) it's *fully*
populated. The two things I need to figure out are a) *which* DIMM it
is, and b) is it mirrored; if so, which *other* DIMM needs to come out
until we get replacements from the OEM.
Here's one of many, all identical, from dmesg:

Re: Hardware RAID Controller -- Risers and 66+MHz ...

Be sure to hit the 3Ware site to read about _incompatible_ risers!
At 66+MHz PCI/PCI-X signaling, many cards/risers have issues.
Many are only designed for 33MHz.

speex_denoise on non-microphone noise (static ?)
Take what I say with a grain of salt: I'm an amateur and haven't actually
touched Speex in any way, yet. I'm just sort of passing on personal belief
from personal experience. Also, check and make sure that the microphone
line is insulated.
There are a number of problems with sound cards picking up interference from
the host machine. The wires that run between ICs on a card

Thanks for the speedy response and detailed, enlightening explanation.
Now I understand where the problem is, and will try out your suggestions
just to further confirm my conjecture.
When I am done, I have to take the foil out, though. This is a product
for our customers to use, and although we've got budget for mulffing
every sound card we developers use, most likely the company

Cluster fun
I've priced some 1 and 2U Dell servers. Now, I'd like to perform a price
comparison of COTS hardware for 1 and 2U servers. What VAR companies do people
recommend I check out for putting machines together? I'm perfectly capable of
installing and swapping hardware components when/where needed, so on-sight
support is not needed.
Thanks much.

Understand that it's a *guess*. If this fixes or at least betters the
situation, you're going to need to find a legit way to insulate these cards,
or to switch cards. If it's for customers, I should hope you wouldn't be
using enamelled aluminum foil. :D

I am in the process of building a new server and have purchased some used hardware. There seems to be some hardware issuses and i am hoping nothing was damaged during shipping. However i am in contact with intel and we are tring to figure out the exact problem via email.
