Vista performance (uggh)
Issue: Vista reads slowly from a samba server. This appears to pop up periodically here and elsewhere. My samba.conf file has: [homes] ... vfs objects = readahead As suggested elsewhere. Writes are approximately 17-18MB/s which is acceptable. Reads are in the 8MB/s range which is appalingly slow. Using linux smbclient and windows XP clients I can read at 25+MB/s. I've enabled vfs

Minor problem with unwritable directories
Hi, I'm not a member of the list, but I think I've run across a (minor) bug. The rsync web page directed me to this list for bug reports. Anyway, I've described it below (including a simple test case with exact commands to reproduce and the output I get from those commands). I hope this helps. Let me know if any more information is needed. Elijah P.S. If it isn't a bug,

Some files not logged when using --compare-dest. Bug?
Hi again. I just spotted another peculiarity when inspecting the rsync log. When using --compare-dest, source files that have permissions that differ from the "comparables" are not logged, unless you're using -i. Here's a testing session: $ ls -lR .: total 12 drwxr-xr-x 2 vidar users 4096 2005-03-31 14:16 cmp/ drwxr-xr-x 2 vidar users 4096 2005-03-31 14:23 dst/

Hello All, I am using the following code to draw a figure. But the legend given buy auto.key has mismatched colors. Could any one help me? I am using R2.12.1 and most current lattice on windows XP. Multichannel working at half speed with 2x NICs
Sorry for the delay Jeremy. I ran strace on the lowest pid for smbd (I ran "pidof smbd" to get pids, and used the lowest one of the 4 or so that came up). Command was "strace -f -o strace.log `ls /proc/2019/task/ | xargs -n 1 echo -n " -p`". I then copied a 1.3GB file from the server to my client to generate traffic. The resulting file was around 93k lines (15MB).

read.csv, header=TRUE but skip the first line
Hi, Complete newbie to R here. Just getting started reading manuals and playing with data. I've managed to successfully get my *.csv files into R, however I have to use header=FALSE because the real header starts in line #2. The file format looks like: PORTFOLIO EQUITY TABLE TRADE,MARK-SYS,DATE/TIME,PL/SIZE,PS METHOD,POS SIZE,POS PL,DRAWDOWN,DRAWDOWN(%),EQUITY 1,1,1/8/2004 12:57:00

logistic regression enquiry
I am hoping for some advie regarding the following scenario. I have data from 26 studies that I wanted to analyse using logistic regression. Given the data was from studies and not individuals I was unsure how I would perform this in R. When analysed in SPSS, weighting was used so that each study was included twice. Where "use" occurred, a value of 1 was assigned and was weighted

Distro prep problems? (Ubuntu 11.04)
On several occasions lately I've had to force installation of updates. The update-manager app; has been flagging some of them with an invalid permission code or some such. Perhaps the algorithm for this has changed with 11.04? To force installation just run with: sudo apt-get upgrade You will be asked if you want to proceed, answer y You will then be asked if you want to accept unverified

TRIPPLITE OMNIVSINT80 Compatibility
Using this UPS in the UK on 240V mains. Connected via USB: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 09ae:0001 Tripp Lite Requires tripplite_usb driver as it is (Product ID: 0001). There is an entry in the compatibity list for OMNIVS800 USB (protocol 2012) using usbhid-ups which is little misleading (although I guess maybe correct for some instances of the UPS). OMNIVS1000 USB (older; product ID: 0001) is

That's not the one you need to strace: you need to find out which smbd process belongs to your session (with

bug in pictex() (package:grDevices)
running pictex() plot(1:11,(-5:5)^2, type='b', main="Simple_Example_Plot") dev.off() (as in the pictex example, but with underscores instead of spaces). the TeX file contains \put {Simple_Example_Plot} [lB] <0.00pt,0.00pt> at 124.00 275.33 the underscores have a special meaning in TeX, so they should be quoted or converted to dashes. -- Sam Steingold

You didn't give me some packages, so now I'm giving you some! R, TexLive, LyX, Gnumeric, etc.
I want up-to-dateish versions of TexLive, R, gnumeric, emacs, but on a more-or-less stable base of Centos-5.2. I asked for packages in this, but got no answers. So now I've built them and will let you try them if you want. I used the source packages from Fedora 8 and 9. I wanted TexLive because many of us have jumped ship to Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and it does offer TexLive, and the compatability
