'Missing end of line'
For a while I've been getting this in my daily reports:
/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: /etc/logrotate.conf:26 missing end of line
It appears to originate from my CentOS server (though since client root mail
goes there I can't be certain. The headers don't suggest client origin, to
me). I've checked the logrotate.conf script and it looks OK to the untrained
eye. It ends

What's special about port 19842?
I've had umpteen IPs knocking on this door yesterday. The router blocked
them, so it's not a problem, but why that port?

Web server in a sandbox?
I'd like to understand better the sysadmin aspects of running a wiki. I
don't have, and don't intend to at this stage, a web server, but I do have
spare capacity on my LAN server box, where I'd like to install MediaWiki. I
found this article:
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/documentation-guide/en_US/sn-sandbox-setup.html
Would it be straightforward to follow those

ssh -X not shutting down
Occasionally I ssh into my server to check something, and if it needs the gui
I use 'ssh -X'. Until recently there was no problem. Exiting simply dropped
me back to my local konsole. Lately, though, the shutdown seems to hang, and
I have to close the session. Any thoughts?

rpmnew puzzles
I'm puzzled by such statements as
diff /var/clamav/daily.cvd /var/clamav/daily.cvd.rpmnew
Binary files /var/clamav/daily.cvd and /var/clamav/daily.cvd.rpmnew differ
I thought the point of rpmnew files was so that we could check what has been
changed?

CentOS for non-tech user
I'm thinking of giving CentOS to a non-tech user for her new desktop. He
needs are small. She has been used to Mozilla for both mail and browsing, so
equivalents there are not a problem. She needs grip and lame, for her mp3s -
again no problem. In fact the only problem I can see is that gwenview doesn't
appear to have the kipi-plugins. I can see libkipi listed, but no plugins,

Could not connect to host box.domain.tld
I have used fetchmail/procmail/postfix/dovecot/kmail for some time on my mail
server, and have set this up on three or four machines in the past. I'm now
setting up a new server and having problems. I've reached the
thinking-in-circles stage, so need a prompt.
The box in question is called borg2.lydgate.lan, and resides at 192.168.0.40.
I can ping both borg2.lydgate.lan and

Security advice, please
I run chkrootkit daily. For the first time I've got reports of a problem -
Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 1008)
The page http://fatpenguinblog.com/scott-rippee/checking-bindshell-infected-
ports-1008/ suggests that this might be a false positive, so I ran 'netstat -
tanup' but unlike the report, it wasn't famd on the port. It was

Crontab Nobody
I have a crontab for Nobody. I tried to delete it in a root kcron, which I'm
sure is how I dealt with this in the past, but it seems impossible to delete.
Should I delete the file /var/spool/cron/nobody? It is owned root:root, perms
600.

Missing package
The big update caused one of the rare re-starts on my mail server, so I saw
the startup messages that I had forgotten about.

Invisible messages
I have pulled in a couple of messages using fetchmail and put them
through a procmail filter, which has resulted in the two messages being
visible in a file manager in ~/Maildir/Design/new. However, using my
Imap account on this box I can't see those messages.
Any hints, please?

Making dovecot and postfix play together
I am encountering 'transport problems' in postfix, and I can't tie them
down. I'm beginning to wonder whether I have conflicting settings in
the various parts of the mail server. I have been advised separately
by a number of people, so it is entirely possible. I am, therefore,
attempting to check every detail of my setup.
I was advised to put

Firewall and nfs mounts
Which ports need to be open on a nfs mount server? And does the client need
anything opening?
I tried setting 2049 udp and tcp, using system-config-securitylevel, but it
doesn't seem to save the settings. First, am I trying the correct ports?
Second, what am I missing in making the changes stick?

Fetchmail multiple instances increasing load average
Hi,
I?m running centos 5.7 with sendmail-8.13.8-8.1.el5_7,
fetchmail-6.3.6-4.el5 and procmail-3.22-17.1.el5.centos. My server is
having around 2000 mailboxes and this server used to fetch mails for all
these users using fetchmail from the other MX server. I?ve configured the
below cron job using webmin for downloading these mail

The case of the missing mail
I became suspicious that I should have received a certain message, and reading
pm.log I discovered that it had indeed arrived and had been allocated to
/var/mail/anne, despite procmailrc telling it that
MAILDIR=/home/anne/Maildir/
Any idea what might have caused this? It seems to have been working like this
only in the last 24 hours or so.

fetchmail on demand
I hoping this is an RTFM ... and somebody can point me at the correct
'FM' :-)
I've just spent a while setting my new Debian , allways-on box in what I
suspect is a generally useful configuration.
I have fetchmail(1) collect mail from many mailboxes via pop3.
I store these mails in different mboxs according to rules in procmail(1)
I then offer these out to the household via imap

how to limit size of dovecot.log
I've done some searching and maybe I'm missing something... I have a
remote dovecot and postfix server running on debian 5. I then have a
local fetchmail server that retrieves email from the dovecot server via
pop3s every 5 minutes.
The problem is that the /var/log/dovecot.log file has grown to be over
1.1GiB over a period of less than 1 year.
Is there a way to limit the size of the

Need advice please
Hi All,
I have a system running (home based) Centos latest fully patched, etc that is
acting as quasi mail server dhcp and name server. My question deals with
mail. This is how it is currently set up.
Because I travel for work weeks on end, I have fetchmail on my mail server,
set up to poll my isp and download all my mail from work and personal isp.
In this way my mail queues at work and
